OK so this won't last long so if you are interested in this phone, jump on this deal before it sells out!

This phone has been in high demand since release, and this is the absolute cheapest I've seen it anywhere. As per the title there are two variants that have been discounted.

I very rarely comment on here but I felt I should on this deal. Absolutely agree with others in this thread - this post is absolutely endemic of a wider problem which is beginning to ruin this site which I've followed closely for about ten years. What made this community so great was the trust you could put in other users contributions, the impartially, where, on the whole, you didn't feel like the site was trying to sell to you. Sadly, that's disappearing more and more with blatantly promoted deals and vendors/mods pushing [email protected] like this on unsuspecting users.

As for the offer itself:

This is an absolutely garbage deal! You are buying a phone from a manufacturer who is widely known for their abysmal customer service and poor reliability. So getting it as a grey import is just a terrible start. This phone is not cheap enough to be disposable like some £25 earphones!

As for the phone:

It seems now that Oneplus has gone mainstream their visibility and marketing team are carrying them along nicely as opposed to their actual value for money proposition which attracted users in the company's infancy.

They have taken advantage of a very techy initial userbase who told all their friends about this cool new company who made amazing phones which you had to be specially invited to buy and only cost a fraction of the brand names.

I've owned the OPO (great phone at the time), the ill forgotten OPX (imo the best phone they made, really underrated) and the OP3T (also good but has its issues).

Yes ALL the previous phones had their flaws, buggy software, TERRIBLE or non existent customer support, missing features and no updates, but they were half or third the price of comparative models! It was worth the minor headaches and risk! We put up with that because we knew the specs were good and we could root the phone and fix the problems.

I was really looking forward to the release of this phone and held off upgrading, but I feel like myself and the majority of their user base were thoroughly disappointed as the leaks appeared on the run up to launch day. We held out hope that maybe, just maybe, they would undercut everyone on price making it great value. Sadly not.

I honestly don't understand why anyone would want to buy this over the multitude of better options in the market now. It's no longer a flagship killer. (Sticking the latest processor in it does not make it a flagship killer - especially when Oneplus have been called out multiple times for cheating on benchmark scores).

This doesn't come close to competing with the flagships as a whole package. Not like their old models did. The paper based "specs war" ended ages ago - no one cares how much ram, GHz or megapixels you have anymore, it's irrelevant. Feature set, camera quality (hard and software wise), real life battery - thats the kind of thing that matters now.

This isn't the quirky oneplus you might have heard your "tech savvy" friends talking about a while ago. This is a totally different company now. A disappointing one.

Sorry for the rant - TLDR:

- Shame on HUKD for promoting this to people so blatantly.

- Shame on Oneplus for this shambles of a release and for completely and systematically shafting the userbase which helped build their company.

Buy at your own risk - you will need to send this back to China at some point. It WILL be a headache and you will be without a phone for 4-6 weeks if all goes well.

Assuming they do it legit, you'll need to add 20% for VAT and 2.5% after that for customs charges. So this "deal" will work out £479.53 for the 64GB and £567.60 for the 128GB. And on top of that your 4G is gimped.

edit: ha, that's more expensive than just buying from OnePlus, this is a terrible deal.

Its because Gearbest pay money for advertising and making itself visible. Thanks to this, it will generate more traffic/sales/etc etc.

For the price being asked for the 5, I'd probably go with a S8.

1080p screen still? And before anyone says "I don't need anything with better resolution" or "I don't use VR"....it's principle. Do you really want to spend this much money and not remain futureproof/get more bang for your buck? Compared to OnePlus 3/3T the price is considerably increased. These are no longer value for money.
The_Hoff to Bhav007
30 Jun 17 2 #20
400+ PPI, how much do think you need? I have 1080P OLED on my Lenovo P2 and it's a perfect resolution, and extremely battery efficient.

1440P as I had on my LG G4 previously is 70% more pixels, each one needs to be rendered and refreshed which murders the battery for a reasonably small visible increase in quality (to my eye), we're not talking about 27" gaming monitors after all.

This is shipped from China so you're almost certainly going to be stung for duty and VAT. Other OnePLus phones from GearBest have been missing certain 4G bands too making them less than desirable in the UK.

But will they ship to the UK. The 128gb version is 499 from one plus or 513 from O2. If you get caught for customs and vat this will cost more and have no warranty. As mentioned I wouldn't be spending this much on a phone with no warranty

Yeah, this deal doesn't stack up for me. VAT, customer service and warranty risk. Phone itself looks good and excellent reviews so far... but no waterproof is a bit poor.

128gb is £40 cheap than OnePlus. Using it right now and it's good. If you get this model anywhere near £400 then you have a bargain. I've used gearstick to get a OnePlus 2. Takes a while and the package tracking doesn't work but it has come through after a month.

Hmmmm......better battery life for the lifetime of the phone or...........principle? Hard choice.

I dont know what you mean by future proofing here, either. Your eyes are unlikely to get better in the next few years, so what kind of benefits do you expect to get as time goes on with a higher resolution screen?

I do agree the value is not what it was, but £380 for, apart from the resolution, absolutely top line specs is still a much better value than the mainline brands.

Loving my OP5 - it's a joy to use - quick, slick, no bloat, almost stock Android, Dash charge, very good camera. Screen is lovely. Not waterproof, but I have insurance through my Lloyds Bank current account so hey ho.

I upgraded from my 11 month old OP3 which held over 75% of its value (lost just £80) even after selling expenses, which really softened the upgrade cost.

Saying all that, I wouldn't buy something this expensive from Gearbest. I did buy a £170 Mi Pad 3 from them recently, but I'd be definitely worried about a near-£500 purchase

Wouldn't vote it down, but I would be reluctant to purchase from them. Their trustpilot reviews are a real mix. I appreciate people only leave a review when something goes really wrong, or really right. And to be fair to them, Gearbest did reply to each person's bad experience and try to sort something out. Some people criticized and said that Gearbest only offers vouchers instead of cash. *shrug*

There are a lot of OP fan boys out there but spec wise, the Axon 7 still has the better screen 1440p vs 1080p and micro sd card, sure people will say you don't need more than 128gb but there are people out there who like me prefer the ease of just being able to shove a memory card in and watch my movies on the go...

I like Geabest and they have improved an awful lot over the last year or so when it comes to customer care (unlike Banggood which has gone in the opposite direction). Having said that you would be nuts to buy an expensive phone like this from them. Oneplus+ are only So so when it comes to reliability and they do not have a good reputation for customer care. If you have Gearbest and a location like China involved in the deal too then you are just asking for trouble. It is just not worth it for a saving of £40.
KingCampo
30 Jun 17 1 #82
Really? What have you done to it? I've got the OP3 and it's been brilliant for the last year. In fact it's so good there's no point in spending £400 changing it.

30 Jun 17 1 #83
Unless it's actually an EU/UK model (which it probably won't be), you will end up having to send repairs to GEARBEST themselves in China/Hong Kong or wherever. Bad deal for that alone.

I have this phone and couldn't be happier coming from an S7 it is so much better. Stock android is a winner and dash charging is incredible I got 71% charge in 50 minutes with the phone on and using it a few times! Battery is amazing for compared to my S7.

As mentioned before one of the main reasons I got the OP5 is beacuse of how may people were happy with the OP3/3T and not seeing a need to upgrade. After using my S7 for a year, and watching it slow down constantly this was a big plus.

Camera is perfect for my needs and it takes good pictures, waterproofing is also not an issue for me my S7 is waterproof and I never used it in fact the only time I tried outside in the rain the screen didn't work anyone so useless to me. Also a 3.5 headphone jack!

I'm not saying the OP5 is better than or worse than the S8,U11 etc but everyone has wants or needs. The S8 has beautiful screen and the U11 finally looks like HTC is making a comeback. Choice is yours at the end of the day!

Oneplus used to be a good company, not anymore !

My 11 month old OP 3 has recently started battery drain issues, overheating and just now the camera auto focus is not working. Raised a ticket for each of the issue above and for everything they just suggest a factory reset which is highly disruptive. I've spent more time fixing this blooming phone as opposed to actually using it recently.

For camera issue they need me to send the device in for repair. Customer service aren't very helpful. However I'm glad that I bought directly from Oneplus otherwise service requests and repairs could be a real pain.

I've read that the battery drain issues were most likely caused deliberately (through recent software updates) to push people to buy OP5. That's foul play and won't buy oneplus again, like someone above said at that price they are no longer flagship killer phone and with that said there's no need take any risk.
twisterteddy
30 Jun 17 2 #87
Having opened 3 support tickets for my OP3 in past month or so, I can confirm their customer care is pretty horrible. As far as the phone reliability I regret buying as I rely on the phone for personal + business use and it has let me down many times.

The specs are indeed great on paper so if you want to show off the phone to your mates and talk their phones down it's great. However I would suggest against OP if you rely on your phone for whatever purpose.

Maybe you could tell us exactly where to look rather than drive-by sh**posting? Are you trying to say this isn't going to get shipped from China? It says it is on the product page on their site. Are you saying you won't get charged VAT or duty? GearBest's T&C's do a pretty good job of mentioning it. The UK.gov site is also pretty clear on the charges. Here's a couple of passages straight from GearBest's site and the product page in question though:

No idea why this is so hot. The best bit is you don't even save a few quid. Unless both you as the buyer and GearBest flout UK law, this will end up costing you more than just buying straight from OnePlus once VAT and duty are added on. Frankly I can't believe that a mod would post a deal like this without warning people of this possibility, seems completely irresponsible to me.

I'm still amazed how the OP thinks it is acceptable to list this excluding VAT? And also not make it clear this is the Chinese version, which has subtle differences.

Jellygate is here

First the dubious benchmarks, now fudging the screen upside down to fit the dual camera creates a new 'feature'.

Take a look at how their returns department are dealing with requests (i.e. ignorance).

Avoid.

Clearly one for the spec nerds who are happy to pay over the odds for a specification they won't utilise. You've got to applaud their marketeers for getting their users to provide so much viral marketing support.

Their (OnePlus) statement to Xda-developers about the Jelly screen issue just says it all to me, disgusting customer service, Basically they don't consider it a fault so just shut your mouths consumers and if your not happy then buy the 5"T" when comes out in about 3 months time as remember the 5 is ONLY £500 bar a penny, not the expensive S8....... Yeah? F#*k off OnePlus

1 Jul 17 #106
this phone has a hardware problem which can't be fixed. Jelly effect on scrolling. Not all affected but you can't exchange it. You can only return within 15 days but you won't even get your phone yet from gear best in that time frame.

1 Jul 17 #107
But the phone you refer to is a much better than the oneplus and comes with unrivalled customer service should anything go wrong. Honestly can't understand anyone spending this sort of money on any Android phone, let alone one that will come with zero warranty from the seller or support from the manufacturer. How is this so hot when nearly all the comments are negative?

I don't know what everyone is talking about, oneplus seems to be half decent from my experience, I've had the OP2 for over 18 months and yes I have to say I had some glitches and os issues but they were somehow resolved and the device has been running smoothly. Stock android decent price for the spec. Only downside is they've stuck with the 1080p display.

I won't say it is a good deal but but it is still £60 cheeper than on the official site. Yeah, you need to wait like a month to get it delivered but I never had been hit by vat or customs charges. Now I'm confused is it covered by any warranty or not. Should be nice to put in OP. Won't buy it because I have the big bro from the official site but want to recommend to my friend to save a little money.

Maybe I'm the only one but I'm happy with my OP5 so far. 3 updates in a week. I haven't experienced any of the issues others complaining about. No jelly effect, no lag, camera is nice, screen isn't worse for my eyes than my previous phones. (Axon7, Honor 8 Pro, S7E) I have really nice battery performance. 6.5h SoT with heavy use. (shock) So whiners to the left. Oh and I don't want to show off with specs. But development and community is a big plus.

As soon as I see an advert (which this listing blatantly is) stating "buy now before it sells out" I know it's time to walk away.

I've worked in sales and know about the tricks and blather, especially the part about creating a false sense of urgency. It might as well read "buy now and quick, don't think about it. Please don't think".

Ordered from oneplus already so I won't be purchasing but great deal!

Have used my oneplus 5 for a 2 days and speed is insane. I notice it more coming from oneplus2. Good battery life, 8gb ram and super fast cpu and still cheaper than competitors.

IPhone lovers this isn't the thread for you.

I'm all for saving money, but I really do think encouraging tax avoidance is not the way to go for HUKD. The prices shown should include all applicable taxes due.

Also isn't it in the rule for posting deals you can't reduce the price of a deal in the title by including cashback as it's not guaranteed? But it's OK to reduce the price by excluding import taxes/charges because it's not guaranteed you will get charged them?

Not HUKD's finest hour.

3 year long OnePlus One owner here. I've been at home on Android for nearly 10 years. Not in a fanboy way, but iOS just hasn't appealed as much to me for any generation of Apple devices.

Months leading to the OP5 launch, I was half set on getting it (other half set on the Xperia XZ Premium, or whatever else was comparable when the time came). Then the price was revealed, £449/£499. Instantly turned off, my OPO was half that price for comparable top specs of the time. This deal is a joke due to not disclosing the (likely) 20% tax that will be ransomed before you can collect it from the Post Office (anyone else buying expensive phones from China who know otherwise, please say). Not to forget the weeks of waiting for it to arrive, and the issues you'd have if returning it.

Therefore, "this isn't the thread for me".

However, this one is.

4 in many of the Asian countries sounds very similar to their word for death, so it's considered bad luck to have the number 4 in the name.

Edit: BTW is this shipping from China or EU? wouldn't you end up paying £80+ in custom charges anyway making this not a great deal?

I think this is a bad deal.

I bought the One Plus 3 as the software is excellent and I need luxuries like USB drag and drop, a headphone jack, OLED screen and a notification LED.

If the sheep phone could do these simple things, I'd still not buy one as they lose too much money in there first year.

1 Jul 17 #122
What makes you think that OnePlus would honour a warranty claim on a phone that you've grey-imported into the country by a reseller because the official channel (OnePlus website) was too expensive..?
api182
1 Jul 17 #123
For the record also, anyone wanting to buy anything from GearBest and not get stung by customs charges, just go for the super saving type shipping, the shipping that takes around 2 weeks to get here.

From past experience, you'll only get stung if you go via a courier like DHL, UPS etc...

Fair enough. That's why Android exists - to cater for those that can't afford an iPhone.
bellboys
1 Jul 17 #126
I think you may have missed the point the poster was attempting to make. The fact a 1080 screen costs considerably less than a 2k one to buy in should be reflected in the price and the poster was suggesting this hasn't been the case here. And I would agree.
bellboys
1 Jul 17 1 #127
What a sweeping, idiotic statement. I'm lucky enough to be able to buy an iPhone whenever I wish but choose not to because I hate getting ripped off. I could also afford to buy my Android mobiles here in the UK but choose to buy direct from China because, I hope you've guessed it, I hate being ripped off. Let this sink in for a minute and then have a word with yourself...

Maybe you can clarify the cost of manufacture of 1440p versus 1080p, you seem to know the details.

VFM the OP5 is stacks up reasonably well IMO versus the other flagships:

HaHa....I have no idea of the difference but I'm sure there is a decent difference given the economies of scale, no? If you were the buyer would you ne offering more for the 1080 screen? Not sure you'd last long in the job lol. And this is maybe (almost) flagship spec but not really from a flagship manufacturer. It's basically a Chinese phone with no warranty like the rest if you order from here.

Nobody in their right mind would order this with no warranty, but I'm more so discussing UK RRP against the S8 and HTC, which I think is fairly priced.

Better buy from Oneplus directly or O2 UK as UK customs duty and warranty is included in price .Once you customs and handling ,not much difference.

So you can afford an iPhone but you don't because of the price. It's the same thing really. You're prepared to compromise in a lot of areas (customer service, warranty, support, updates, stability of os and apps) to save some money. Admittedly you might end up with something that on paper looks better, but really day to day those extra pixels, RAM, etc are only there because big numbers appeal to the uninformed. In reality, regardless of the specs the phone will os and apps will be more buggy than iPhone and you'll be very lucky to get more than one major update during the life of the phone.
I use an Android phone (S7) because it was cheap but I would never pretend it was because Android is superior to iOS- it's not even close and feels more like a beta testing programme than a final release.
Smartguy1
2 Jul 17 2 #137
Or maybe people just buy an android phone because they prefer the operating system. Last time I looked Samsung phones were about the same cost on contract. I use a mac at home and whilst I prefer the superior quality of the hardware there are issues with the way it works when compared with windows. The same goes for any operating system. Sometimes it's got bugger all to do with cost, it's what the user prefers.
