If you pay the plan monthly you will also have to pay line rental. So no
When you pay the device in full you can then cancel the airtime part of the contract (within 14 day cooling off period)

For example on the 16gb version it will be the £29.99 upfront tariff and £22 per month (£3 for phone, £19 for tariff) as instructed above once you pay off the device (£72) then cancel line rental you end up with the phone for £101.99
Its a bit of a faff but worth it if you can be bothered.

Of course your score will drop, you're taking out a credit agreement!! It will however go back up if you make the payments on time and/or close the account when paid in full.

You are correct. But its not such a fun thing to have to do. I had an awful experience and I was just trying to make a point that the 1 year O2 warranty is hard hard work. Whereas a new phone is covered by Apple, who are excellent to deal with. Clearly the difference in cost of a brand new phone is a huge factor.

people must be maaaaaad to buy a 16gb phone in 2017!! :O Especially a phone with a 4" screen!!

Yeah 2017, online storage and fast internet for streaming/downloading means disposable storage is not an issue.

The comment on screen size is totally naive too. Personally love a phone which I can run with and use at night with one hand.

Sorry I have little knowledge of credit...why does a company conducting a credit check reduce your score?

ALso, is this available for someone who doesn't have an o2 contract in the first place?
Anon

You are taking out a credit agreement so that adds to your credit file.

Yes available to new customers.

I had O2 replace my 5S refute on the last day of the warranty - easy enough to phone up and get it sent to them. A few days later they sent a Grade A replacement rather than repair :sunglasses: . Replacement has a 90 day warranty.
Anon
30 Jun 17 #10
??? No, you choose which tariff you want as a new customer. Why would you keep the tariff? Pay off, then get a rolling 30 day or SIM only deal
Ydot
30 Jun 17 #11
Cheers for response. But surely, if you are continuing to make payments on time then the credit shouldn't be affected? In that case I have a gym membership, a car lease etc - are they also reducing my credit? I was under the impression that is how you improve credit scores.

Unless of course the reason the credit is damaged is because we are cancelling the contract?
Anon
30 Jun 17 #12
No one said your credit is damaged - but your score changes with each application/new commitment/credit agreement ending. If you have too many searches in a short period or too much credit it can prevent you getting other contracts.

There's no such thing as a 'credit score', it's a made up number by credit agencies to sell extra add-ons to mugs who panic about it going down by 10 points.
Noddle says I've got an average credit score this month, was good last month. I can get cheapest deals on market if I did ever need credit. I pay zero attention to whatever their made up rating is.

Lenders only see your history, having a phone contract which you pay off early, or something like a VT in car finance won't negatively affect you.

Actually it isn't nonsense when things go wrong - on two previous desks they have somehow messed up closing my account down properly and reported missed payments to the credit reference agencies (despite the DD being left in place to avoid such an issue) resulting in my credit score being trashed. In both cases they eventually resolved it, though it took months for my score to recover.
Anon
30 Jun 17 #20
I know my circumstances will be the exception but there is a risk. This hasn't prevented me from taking out another deal this time, but I am watching every stage like a hawk for them messing up. I took contracts out on previous occasions for my wife and both those went without a hitch, so I know not everyone has a bad experience.

Leave the DD in place until the account is completely closed down and the final bill cleared.

Expect in some instances they will try charging you the first month.

Expect in some cases they will charge some of us the full contract amount despite them saying they won't, the didn't, they haven't or they wouldn't (so leave that amount in your account to avoid going overdrawn or the payment being rejected - a pain but they will refund).

It has been going on for years since they launched Refresh - their staff are not all clear on how the contract works, their system still reflects old style contracts and not Refresh, so it sometimes processes incorrectly if the staff member is not familiar.

Strangely the only really competent department is complaints X)

i agree with the online storage and fast internet bit.. but what about installing apps? even to update ios, it takes up most of the space in the phone. SE is not worth it IMO and it's just pointless when other companies are doing better spec phones for the same price with expandable storage
peanuted
30 Jun 17 #28
Space is subjective.

However just YouTube se v iPhone 7

It holds its own and then some

And for 100 quid and one year warranty- to say it's not worth it, is simply madness.

There may be no such thing as a credit score (apart from all the credit reference agencies show one). Believe what you will, though the information contained on your credit file directly affects whether you will be accepted for other financial products.

In my case, when they messed up and showed missed payments (which were not due - and they could have taken by DD if they had wanted to as it was set up) and I was rejected for a new bank account, and experienced other problems directly due to O2 reporting incorrect information, then speaking from experience whether it is the credit score (which flagged there was a problem to me when I got my free credit score and report!) or the actual items on the credit file that were reflected in the score, matters not a jot to me.
Sid.Harper

Different league. It's a 6s is a smaller firm factor minus 3d touch.

Don't bother with 16gb. Wholeheartedly recommend it.

For those saying it's a couple of years old, small screen, etc depends what you want. Wife and I don't like the larger phones - these pack a serious punch.

I would be very careful with the refresh deal, I did this with an iPhone 5s paid off in full immediately and cancelled. I wish I can say that was it but I had problem after problem with the cancellation. In the end 02 defaulted my credit file for £13 without ever sending me any notification. It took me 2 months of worry and pain to get this resolved and removed from my credit file!

That is high risk because if they mess up (they have form!) then a cancelled DD will leave a report of a missed payment as they cannot collect payment. I know they should not be collecting payment, I know in your mind you owe them nothing - but their system doesn't always see that and it then takes longer to clear up. I would always advise leaving the DD running until all sorted.

1 Jul 17 #44
As I was mentioning, me too. Interesting (or not given the hassle it causes) the online account does not always reflect these sort of issues - in my circumstances they didn't notify me that I had allegedly missed a payment (phantom payment, given it was not due). They have clear system issues that affect some (not all) customers, so do need watching very carefully. Given one part of their system believes you owe them money, you would think it would notify by email or by post - but in my case nothing. The first I knew was when I was getting rejected for a bank account and then checked my credit report (free - ClearScore, MoneySupermarket, Noddle now all signed up for to cover all three agencies!).

I wish people would stop trying to dismiss people mentioning credit scoring when they clearly have no clue of the impact O2 can have your credit score/credit file when they mess up.

Even under normal circumstances taking out a mobile contract can impact on your ability to get other credit if you take out too many credit agreements or searches in a short space of time. However, for many people one additional phone contract (quickly paid off ;)) should have limited impact.

Refurbished but like new (in reality I think they are just phones returned within first 14 days/after inspection and they then cannot sell as a new) - you wonder with the sheer volume of Like New that they sell what they do with the boxes, plugs, earphones etc. It is also a lot of refurbished phones which has become a market in itself for them.

You talk as if Credit Reports are intrinsically linked to your personal ID. They aren't. They are linked to a name and an address. There is absolutely no link to you using something like National Insurance or a tax ID. Its a rough guess when you get to the bones of how it works.... and this is how you can manipulate it.

Anon
3 Jul 17 #67
Yes that is my understanding as it has to appear on the O2 network and lock to O2 before they can unlock it. Easy enough to do - insert SM, phone home (don't answer!) or 202 on the handset.
airbus330
3 Jul 17 #68
It is actually the very last statement before you confirm the order where it asks if you want the airtime service to start as soon as you receive the sim. In brackets it states that you can still cancel the airtime contract within 14 days and only pay for what you have used.

Are you guys sure you have to put the sim in the phone and make a call to unlock it?
I've done this 3 times and never have (admittedly the last being 2 yrs ago)
Just think once you've inserted the sim and messed about it gives them an excuse to charge the extra
I seem to remember saying the phones just arrived ( still in the packaging / sim sealed) I want to cancel the airtime and buy the phone, then unlock it online
Anon
3 Jul 17 #75
I understand that it arrives unlocked as all iPhones do, but they lock to the first SIM that is inserted. A reason for inserting the O2 sim and activating that way, followed by an O2 unlock is that makes it factory unlocked and you can then change SIMs in future. If you lock to a diffetent network you may end up having to pay to unlock it in future.
airbus330
3 Jul 17 #76
Isn't the case that you can't set up an iphone without inserting a sim? If you can't complete the setup, you can't see the imei number to put into O2's unlock webpage.
I'm interested if you can do it your way, as I have always done it the published way and have had problems with O2's accounts dept. It gets sorted eventually, but I'd rather avoid the aggro if possible.
zermattbusby
3 Jul 17 #77
Some are some aren't, in some ways its better it arrives locked, more chance of it being an immediate return, rather than unlocked and messed about with
zermattbusby
3 Jul 17 #78
This is what I did last time (bare in mind that was two and half years ago lol)

1) sign up for the contract (nothing to pay)
2) When the phones arrives apply for the unlock code (no need to insert the sim)
3) Phone O2 tell them you want to cancel the airtime and pay off the handset £216.00
4) Confirm with online chat everything is in order, keeping a copy of the transcript
5) That's it.

Thats interesting, I did the last Refresh one in Feb. As you can see on the attached unlock request link, an o2 ph number is a required field.
Oddly enough, I had to unlock another old ex-O2 iphone recently and the O2 service desk told me to use my own ph number (which is O2) in this field. I did so and the phone unlocked with no issues. So no reason why this won't work that I can see.

3 Jul 17 #85
Yeah, this is normal.
You have 14 days to cancel the airtime agreement.
I have never had to wait more than 3 days for the unlock to happen. You will get a txt on the phone with the sim in it. Cancel the airtime as soon as you are unlocked.

From previous experience, don't cancel either of the DD's . O2 regularly cock up on this and make a call on your bank account after the cancellation. If they do, it is better for your credit rating to let the charge go thru and claim it back under the DD Guarantee with your bank, than let the DD bounce and get snotograms from O2. Obviously this only works of you have spare money in the bank, so is where some have got caught out.

I would call back and switch to PAYG or request a PAC and then transfer the number to another network (get a SIM from the supermarket, max £1 and don't top up - PAC tonight, it will be dead on Thursday). Reports on the other thread suggest that kills the contract quicker and you don't then have to pay the 30 days. It seems the 30 day is a recent hassle that they have introduced (inconsistently) depending on who you get on the phone and how they want to read the t&cs..

OK. So I took out this deal on the weekend, and phone arrived yesterday, but it was locked to EE!

I phoned O2 to complain last night and they said I would need to call back in the morning for a door swap. But they did give me £10 account credit for my troubles.

Yes but people like myself struggle typing on the smaller screen. I have been using iPhone 5S for my current job and my previous job, so for over 2 years providing Apple and Mac support using 5S. It is still difficult to type on it! I wish I could go back to Blackberry keyboard :disappointed:

I use Xperia z1 for typing personal stuff. It is dying so I have gone for Wileyfox Swif2t+ from Amazon Warehouse. I was really tempted with the 64GB iphone SE model, but the difficult to type screen and the quad core CPU with 2GB RAM wasn't tempting enough compared with the octa core CPU with 3GB Ram. I still think the 64GB storage is good though compared to faffing about with extra SD storage on Android. I will use the android and if there's problems I will return to Amazon and then get this o2 refresh deal.

I found that over the phone they just kept repeating about 30 day terms. So I paid off the device and left the airtime running.

I then went on chat & explained the situation & they moved it to payg & stated that no money would be taking and the first montly bill refunded if already charged. They said there will be no 30 days terms as I'd cancelled with the 14 day cooling off period.

The phone itself looks immaculate... but the ear speaker sound is distorted. I thought i'd stick with it & if necassary take it to the apple store since its in warranty.

Quick Q.

Anyone know if during checkout process you can get delivery to address diff from card billing address?

Before anyone asks, I know a student who could benefit from this deal but term address difft from home billing address so it's the difference between ordering now or waiting a couple of weeks. No funny business

question for you guys. Isn't it the same if I choose 'Pay for your device in full'? eg 16gb almost perfect £115.99 up front £11 monthly. Isn't this the same as doing it the way as the original deal, but I wont have to worry about about paying off the device? And I can still cancel the airtime contract? Anyone do it this way?
zermattbusby
5 Jul 17 #132
Yes you could do it that way
Although slightly more expensive 116 as opposed to 4 x 24 = 96 + 10 = 106
Paying off the phone isn't a problem its the paying off the airtime that's slightly tricky

Yes. You had a 14 day change your mind policy whereby you can return the handset, cancel the airtime, or both. Generally there aren't too many issues with doing so, but this is O2 we're talking about here so you might still get charged for a number of things and will have have to chase them to get it resolved.

If you read up on here you should not be paying 30 days notice. Switch to PAYG, port the number out or upgrade to SIM only ... then cancel SIM only. All should cut the cost and end your contract quickly if they won't let you cancel immediately. All discussed on here or the other refresh deal.
nitro228
7 Jul 17 #191
So I ordered 2 almost perfect phones which I collected Monday. Both had expired warranties (1 expired that day). One of them died yesterday so I spoke to o2 and they sent a replacement delivered today which also had expired warranty. All are mint condition though.
Worrying thing is the unlock request for the first two I received has been rejected - spoke to them and they said it is because I've only just joined O2. New policy is 30 day minimum on their network before they will unlock phones and even then it's discretionary and limited to one phone unlocked per account holder per year. I've tried escalating it and everyone has said the same thing.
Looks like mine will be going back under the 14 days return policy!

Phone was unlocked today after first requesting Monday and chasing a few times.

When I phoned to cancel the person I spoke to at O2 insisted that it was 30 days notice to cancel and that the 14 day cooling off period only applied if I was returning the handset as well. When I said this must be a new policy he said that in the past they had been giving people the wrong information and shouldn't have been allowing them to pay off the device and cancel the airtime contract without notice.

It seems some people have been told 30 days and others not so it may be worth phoning back until you get the right result.

My unlock came through tonight after chasing today on chat. Also got the chat person to reassure me I'd not have to pay anything because of the delay in unlocking. Phoned O2 and paid off the device, then the girl pointed out the 30 days thing. I let her know I'd been advised differently on chat and that the person had said she was going to put a note on my account to that effect. Was then told they'd honor that even tho it's not correct, she'd port the number onto PAYG and I'd be charged from 05/07. I told her I never got the phone until the evening of 06/07 and she said she'd put a £5 credit on my account which would cover all airtime costs.

Don't worry ... I'll be keeping an eye on this.

So I took my SE to apple store today.

Although it look immaculate, the call/ear speaker was distorted. I would have preferred a swap, but they said that a replacement screen would fix it.

I had my daughters iphone 5 look at whilst I was there as the screen was lifting at the top. They agreed it was a swollen battery & offered to replace the phone for the cost of the battery £79.

I'm not regretting accepting this as I could probably have bought something better for £79 & even if I'd gone higher, I would have had the old phone to sell. Does anyone know its possible to change your mind and get a refund?
zermattbusby
8 Jul 17 #213
Not quite sure what you're asking mate? Doesn't really make sense, did you mean to say - I'm now regretting it? in which case you're right, it probably wasn't a good idea, baring in mind you could buy another SE for £25.00 more, shouldn't really be a problem getting a refund then sell the 5 for 30 quid. Just hope they haven't disposed of the 5. Regards the SE I know one things for sure I wouldn't want a replacement screen, I'd get onto O2 and have it replaced, they'll just swap it at your door for a new one. Hope that helps

I ordered a 16gb "perfectly fine" iPhone SE last weekend, cosmetically it was absolutely perfect but it suffered from a faulty battery and wouldn't come out of standby without holding the home & power button for 10 seconds so I decided to send it back and cancelled the deal under the 14 change your mind policy. Typically an hour or so after posting it back to them the unlock confirmation email came through after a 5 day wait.

I've since been trying to order another iPhone under the exact same contract (for another family member) but I'm unable to due to a credit declination message right at the end. Tried it with multiple accounts/bank details (including mine that worked last time and also the missus') but get the same message, not sure if there's something wrong with their credit checking system today or not.

Wish I'd just taken the faulty one back to the Apple store to be replaced as it had warranty until November.
Anon
9 Jul 17 #215
Their system seems to fall over when you try ordering another phone on the same logged in account despite the ordering system suggesting that you can. If you set up as a new customer (all the same details apart from email address, bank details and payment card) you may find it goes through okay (I did).
nitro228
9 Jul 17 #216
Without knowing your individual circumstances it's hard to say but it could be that you've failed the credit check. You may have been borderline the first time and the search they did would have had a negative impact which tipped you over the edge. Each time you've tried to check out with the replacement order another search would have been done and each one will compound the effect on you credit history. If you fail once it's really not a good idea to keep trying as any lender looking int he future will see that you've had multiple applications for credit declined.
nitro228
9 Jul 17 #217
Out of interest why wouldn't you want a replacement screen? Most of the grade C (perfectly fine) and some grade B (almost perfect) are phones that have been returned under warranty and repaired. Nearly all of them will have had some kind of repair which will often include hardware being replaced so I don't see why you'd be against having a screen replacement now. I'd much rather have it repaired and know there's still some warranty remaining than have it replaced and risk ending up with a phone with an expired apple warranty.

9 Jul 17 #225
Yes, I meant to say I'm now regretting it. Was on the spot & late in the day. The way they word it (we'll replace the phone for cost of a battery repair) made me think I was getting a good deal until my brain went back into gear.

Went back to store, but they wouldnt refund, wouldn't upgrade (without charging for sales cost).

The SE is fine, not sure what you're problem with a screen repair is... the phone still has original warranty & even if it didn't its got 3 months warranty on the repair.

How long have people been waiting before being able to unlock their device via the My O2 website? My phone arrived this morning however the website isn't letting me unlock my device.

I have activated the SIM by receiving a phone call and text.
I've clicked through the the unlock device bit of the My O2 website via: My O2 > Device details > Unlock your device. However this page just displays the message: "This information is not available at the moment. Please try again later.".

Do we know if it requires more than a few hours between activating the SIM and the system refreshing such that this route becomes an option, or should I just request the unlock via the web chat?

This might help a few people *******

- So I've done all of the previous steps (paid off phone, unlocked phone).
- I went on to chat and asked to cancel. The chat person said that because I'm within the 14 cooling off period that I needed to call 202 instead and that there was nothing I could do online.
- I called 202 and got the 30 notice to cancel BS. I didn't want to fuss around with the PAYG so thought I'd try online again.
- The 2nd time I was on the online chat service I found out that there is a specific cancellations team that they chat service can transfer you to. They can cancel your contract immediately and advise you of things like direct debits, when the final bill will be generated etc. Always good to have because you can either email yourself a copy of chat in case o2 mess something up.

Hope that help someone.

10 Jul 17 #231
My unlock came through via email yesterday having requested it via the online form about three days prior.

Having just spoken with customer services on 202 the chap was very helpful although I suspect he is well aware of this process. I paid the remainder of the phone off with my credit card and he cancelled my air plan there and then; nothing mentioned of a thirty day bill.

Those challenged with the thirty day payment I suggest you quote point 10 on their T&C as this is not mentioned anywhere - o2.co.uk/ter…ent

He did advise leaving the direct debit active as I was informed I may be issued a refund through this, given that I paid the first month in advance.

Fingers crossed!

I went on live chat, and they said it would need to be done manually, they could fill in form for me or I could do it myself.
I then asked if the IMEI of my phone was showing as registered on the network, they checked and confirmed it was and in doing so they were able to submit an unlock request from that screen. They did that and I got the unlatch confirmation email in half an hour.
For anyone having similar problems I'd recommend asking live chat to check if the phone is registered on the network as that seems to be the screen they need to request an unlock.

Got a 64GB SE, "almost perfect", with a tiny chip at the bottom of the bezel, and no apple warranty left.
Send back or keep? Would I be able to order again, hoping to score a better one, or will O2 not allow to order the same?

Can anyone advise - I've followed the process at the start of this thread, however after chasing for the phone to be unlocked I was expecting an unlock code. Instead I just received a text from O2 to say "almost there to unlock just insert a nonO2 sim".

Should I be using an unlock code instead?

And should I go ahead and unlock before calling up services to cancel the airtime and pay off the phone?

Having read all the posts, I'm a bit confused on the best way to get this now. I'm inclined to choose a perfect space grey iphone se with 64gb storage. It shows as £10x24 device cost if I choose £0 upfront and £25/month tariff...

But if I choose pay for device in full, it is £289.99 and then £11/month tariff....

If I choose the former, am I stuck paying for the entire plan for 24 months or can I still pay off the £240 in one go and then cancel the remaining £13/month tariff? Or should I go for the "pay in full" method which is £50 more and cancel the £11/month tariff...

Secondly, do I have to be an existing o2 customer and login prior to doing this or can I sign up as a new customer...

Thanks!!

There are still Perfectly Fine available - 16gb £29.99 up front and £3 per month (£101.99) on the £18 tariff or 64gb Gold Perfectly Fine £8 per month x24 on £23 tariff (£192).

I would still choose pay monthly. When it arrives insert SIM to activate phone and pair SIM with phone and call 202 to get it on the network (no need to speak to someone). Submit unlock (via chat). Then either request pay off and switch to PAYG or request PAC and use to another network. Or upgrade to £9 PAYM SIM Only then cancel the SIM only.

No, you can pay off the balance of the handset at any time, even the day you receive it.
nitro228
11 Jul 17 #250
Why would you recommend a perfectly fine over a perfect? The perfect ones are literally new phones returned under the 14 day cooling off period and will almost certainly have most of their Apple warranty left.
Perfectly fine, while cosmetically good will usually have been returned to O2 as faulty and repaired and may or may not have apple warranty remaining. For the extra £40 odd I'd say the perfect is a much better option.
Anon
11 Jul 17 #251
Why not? They are cheaper, look brand new (from my experience) have some remaining Apple warranty and are covered by O2 warranty anyway if anything goes wrong. Each to their own and their budget - I am happy with my Perfectly Fine phones.

That's the same message they kept telling me when I first tried. I guess it's the luck of the draw who you get and how much they know. The chaps name was Rakesh, not that I think that'll help too much. When I spoke to them I asked for immediate cancellation and they put me straight through. It wasn't until I'd be transferred that they asked security details etc.

Just ask for the PAC code then transfer the number to a pay as you go sim....that should terminate the airtime contract, you'll just have to pay the the days up until the number transfers.

13 Jul 17 #269
For those who are struggling to cancel the contract within 14 days but being told they can only give 30 days notice ask to make a complaint. They will give you the email address and you should then get it cancelled as I did.
They initially told me that by paying off the phone I was waiving my right to the 14 day notice but unable to tell me were in the terms and conditions it stared this. I also stated that despite the terms and conditions I have my statutory rights under the Consumer Contracts Regulations that allow me a 14 day cooling off period in which to cancel my contract. They still would not let me cancel without the 30 days notice.
So my advice is to go through the complaints procedure to get it cancelled.
tapash
13 Jul 17 #270
Yes.
Elysium
13 Jul 17 #271
Yes for some reason the cancellation team thinks that the 14 cool off period does not apply when you pay off the device. But in point 10 and 14 of O2's terms and condition is says "Unless you paid off the device" meaning we do not have to return the device as we paid it off in full so we can cancel the Service Agreement as we're on the 14 day cool off period. They're still not having it now and making some random rule up to charge people 1 months bill.

Just port the number to a PAYG and leave it. Really simple it is and no point hassling with them.
emmatthew
13 Jul 17 #272
I know if porting to PAYG (on another network) Will end your contract instantly they may still bill you the 30 days on the next bill as every time I port and by doing so give 30 days notice I have been charged the remainder of the 30 days but this has been with other networks. My guess is you will pay the £15 for the 30 days and have to go through the hassle when your final bill comes through to request you £15 back. But I stand corrected if any one can confirm this has not happened to anyone porting to PAYG
KP59
13 Jul 17 #273
Hi,

I have now paid the remaining balance £72.00 and asked to move onto PAYG. This cancels the contract almost immediately. I confirmed via chat that there will be no further charges following 15/07/17. I'll keep an eye out on how much money they take for the final bill.

Thank you everyone who has provided information on the comments and feel free to ask anything further.

I am sure that some of you have spotted this, and I am contradicting myself somewhat as I am happy with the quality of Perfectly Fine .. but Almost Perfect 16gb have a lower up front payment of £9.99 (instead of £29.99) but a higher monthly phone plan of £4 instead of £3. The upshot is £105.99 instead of £101.99. I am not sure why I didn't notice this earlier, unless some more tariff options have appeared? It is the £9.99 up front/£19 a month tariff. This may be useful for people still wanting a choice of all colours.

I've just got off the phone trying to cancel the monthly agreement.

I didn't have to pay off the device in full because I paid it in full when I purchased it.

The woman said she was unable to generate a PAC code because the number needed to be on the network for 6 months before that was possible (surely that's not true :s) and this also meant I was unable to switch to a pay-as-you-go...
BUT she did cancel my contract without me having to return the phone. She said I should cancel the direct debit just in case they do take the money (which sounds pretty weird to me). She said the phone number will just stop working shortly, which I guess will confirm the cancellation, and that I'd get a "final bill" within 14 days, to account for anything I've used on the device so far, which should be zero...

Gonna be awaiting confirmation of the cancellation before getting too excited I think!
Anon
13 Jul 17 #276
I am not sure why they advise customers to cancel the Direct Debit as that is high risk if their system messes up (s many people have reported does happen) where they still present for payment and it "bounces." I would always leave it running until the final bill has been produced (and allow them to take payment then refund if required).

Phone back and try again (Speak to C/S though not cancellations)

When we phoned to cancel the Wife's contract, the guy (Darren) literally said, let me guess... You've signed up for the contract just to buy the phone? No problem just pay off the device balance and I'll shut it down immediately

Mine took a little more persuading but got there in the end without having to pay the 30 days (said she'll waive it on this occasion)

The issue I can see with the warrant whether with Apple or O2 is that if the phone cannot be repaired and is replaced you will receive a phone with the same simlock as received originally (locked to O2) so not too sure how to unlock the replacement phone without a O2 contract other than via a third party unlocker?

Mine took less than 48hrs to come through. I didn't cancel the airtime plan before it came through though as it can be a pain to unlock it if you don't have a pay monthly airtime account.
If you do have to change over phones after cancelling airtime it is difficult to unlock as pointed out (I ended up in that position 2 years ago). I had to get a payg account & do it that way.
I would make sure they knew I wanted it unlocked before swapping.

That's not quite true. If the phone is replaced by O2 in the future the replacement may well be locked to O2, but if done through Apple that won't be the case.
The sim lock on Apple warranty replacements will be the same as the phone being replaced at the time it is exchanged. It is irrelevant what simlock was on the device originally as far as apple are concerned.
nitro228
19 Jul 17 #300
It might be covered in theory but the chances of a successful outcome are almost non existent. After 30 days O2 will repair rather than replace the phone which means sending it off and being without the phone for weeks potentially. Coupled with trying to do that once you've cancelled the contract it probably isn't worth the hassle.
I think it's best to accept that if the apple warranty has expired and the phone goes wrong you're on your own.

19 Jul 17 #301
Speaking from experience last month the O2 Warranty is fine. My Grade C iPhone 6S camera went blurry and I returned it in the last week of the Warranty - you get a choice how to send it - they will send a return pack, or a returns label to drop into the Post Office or you can drop it into an O2 store. Within a few days they had sent back a replacement Grade A - the cover note said it was a replacement rather than repair to avoid any delays. It came with an additional 90 day warranty.

I don't think there is anything to worry about (unless they have messed up :unamused: ). It takes a few days after receipt of the SIM - they send the PAYG SIM out and then a few days later the number transfers and it closes the account (online it then appears as Disconnected). When I called last week to close down the account they tried the 30 days notice line, so I quickly changed to PAYG as that seemed like the quickest option - they said the account would close on Thursday (so a week later!). In hindsight I would have bought an Asda sim for 50p and then requested a PAC and given it to Asda so that it could close down in 1/2 days max.

26 Jul 17 #311
My transfer is complete but on my o2 there's nothing about pay monthly contract just the pay as u go!
Anon
26 Jul 17 #312
It seems to depend on how you enter their site. I think on a desktop if you click on MyO2 on the top menu then My O2 on the page (left hand side) it shows current and previous contracts including Disconnected.

On a mobile, load MyO2 in the browser. Click on the menu top right (it looks like 3 horizontal lines), on that menu click My O2 then Manage My Details, then My o2 Products and Services which is a link in the page near the top of that page.

It seems to be a real faff just to see the information but I suppose their logic is that the default is your current account.

4 Aug 17 #322
Their termination fee, when they charge it (in error) is what remains of your 24 months line rental (normally about 23 months if they have already billed the first payment).

So far my second bill shows a credit - the breakdown shows each period of time with my different upgrade tariffs until I finished. My error was switching to PAYG (or rather letting them send the PAYG and the transfer, as that added an unnecessary week of line rental - I should have just requested the PAC). I await my final bill to see if it has been processed correctly.

In the end it has cost me about a month of line rental but I did a few upgrades. Worth noting that although it didn't seem to credit check for each upgrade, each is reported as a new contract on Equifax/ClearScore :astonished: . I expect next month will show them all settled but it has brought my score down this month (I know there are different views on whether this matters or not).

Just an update in case this helps others for future Refresh deals. I used the upgrade option to obtain a couple of additional devices for family members and to get a longer Apple warranty (the longest was April 2018 for a 16gb SE handset), finally switching to PAYG. I tried switching to PAYM Sim Only then close that in the 14 day cooling off period for that account, as suggested on here, but they still claimed I needed to give 30 days notice so switched to PAYG - I was probably just unlucky with the agent I spoke to. My second/final bill online showed a breakdown of each new period/tariff and then credits against the first payment. Once I had switched to PAYM Sim Only, the upgrade option for additional handsets was no longer available, so keep that in mind if you do want to request any more.

It is worth noting that although it did not do a credit search on each upgrade application, the new handset agreement (followed by account closure) each appear on the credit report. On my Clear Score and Noddle, the credit score itself does not appear to have been affected beyond when the first contract was taken out, when the score dipped slightly.

If I had paid in full for the device each time, I assume there would have been only the one entry on my file (for the airtime) as I would only have been the one credit agreement. Would the upgrade option still be available for the handset if paid for in full? I assume so and if that is the case, if participating next time I will probably take that route just to keep it less complicated and only one credit file entry (it will also mean I could probably request, if required, another handset as soon as I get the despatch confirmation). I would also request a PAC and transfer the number out to close the account, as going the PAYG route added another week until it was processed.

Finally, if anyone is looking to sell any old handsets, it is worth checking Game as well as other online trade in companies, as they offered the best price instore when I checked to get rid of our older iPhones (more than I paid for the refurbs - so effectively free upgrades :sunglasses: ).
