It's frankly staggering how much you're willing to ignore and sweep under the carpet when it doesn't fit your agenda. Did you see all those PSVR games announced by Sony yesterday? Or did you ignore them because it doesn't fit your bizarre agenda? Console sales are on the up, interest in VR has never been higher, new consoles and new VR games and peripherals are all being launched, many *this week*, yet you think it's all over and Sony will want to get out of the game... righto.. It's like E3 is currently running to prove you wrong in every way.

You seem keen on avoiding questions too, so I'll pose this one again:

"Xbox X is Microsoft responding to the threat"
Which specific threat is it responding to, and in what way is it specifically targeting that threat?

Oh and, how does your PC streaming solution work on the train? I've been able to play a Vita on the train for years, and it can also remote play my PS4.. imagine that huh...?
Leonintelex
13 Jun 17 #83
Sure dude, keep telling yourself that.

For me I can stream 4k 60fps with no noticeable lag, the Shield paired with a decent graphics card absolutely takes away the need to have a PS4. In fact it makes the PS4 show how antiquated the tech is (rocking it like it's 2010)

Also tried PSVR, it is awful ...it's like playing at 600x400 resolution. I wasn't impressed with the Vive +which I sold) paired with a 1080, but it's literally 1000x better. Screams gimmick to me, total waste of money.

At least the Switch offers something different, I can play it on a train!

It isn't painful reading and I'm not being protective - I'm just calling you out for posting absolute nonsense, the sort of nonsense that people have said for literally decades. I have a PC for gaming and I have a PS4 with PSVR. They're both great but they fit different markets. PSVR, whilst obviously having resolution hit (like *all* VR solutions do), is still an incredible experience, offering many completely new types of experience. Sony have shifted around a million PSVR units, and that's with a relatively expensive and clunky solution. There will be a PS5, of course there will, and IMO it will have VR as a first class design consideration.

"Streaming will replace consoles for sure. People said Netflix would never replace bluray. Or MP3 would never replace CDs."
If streaming replaces consoles, then streaming replaces PC gaming too. What you're describing is a shift in having local hardware compared to your game running on a server. Personally I think we're a long way off the internet's general latency and bandwidth being good enough to support top quality streaming for the masses. I can stream my PS4 to my PC over my *local wired network* but the latency and quality hit is noticeable. No matter how good you make the experience, it will always be better using hardware locally, and it will always be more convenient to the general public consumer to buy a console.

The Switch sold faster than the Wii-U. The PS4 sold faster than the PS3. The XBox One sold faster than the Xbox 360. Can you see the trend? Your suggestion that there is a "nail in the coffin for traditional consoles", is patently nonsense.
Leonintelex
12 Jun 17 #81
Sure dude, like I said the Xbox X is Microsoft responding to the threat. Microsoft doing a better job than Sony. It's a 1060 so anyone who runs a PC knows that some serious optimisation (or cutbacks) needs to be done to hit 4k HDR at 60FPS, ideally you need a 1080ti (or 2). A 1060 is only good for 1440p at high settings.

Streaming will replace consoles for sure. People said Netflix would never replace bluray. Or MP3 would never replace CDs.

And as for VR, I think the PSVR will be dead and buried in 12 months once the novelty wears off. Lets face it, playing VR at such a low resolution isn't exactly the future. Mobile VR is rapidly catching up and will soon leapfrog the PS4 in terms of performance.

And I never once said PCs were the future. I just think the PS4 is showing its age and genuinely think Sony will not be doing a PS5. I think they would be wise to either go third party or follow a similar path to Nintendo and release a hybrid.

Why do people get some protective over their beloved consoles? I'm just seeing it from a business perspective, sorry if it makes for painful reading.

Did you see how Microsoft have cancelled their new Xbox One X in the light of your news? Apparently "the writing is on the wall" for consoles so they've ditched it in favour of streaming...

You seem to have spectacularly misunderstood what PS Now is about. It was originally launched to bring PS3 support to the PS4 because their very different architectures (PS3 wasn't x86), means that ports or emulation of older titles isn't possible. They 'solved' this by setting up PS Now service to stream PS3 games to the PS4. This is why you'll find that the vast majority (if not all), of the titles available are older PS3 games. Obviously down the line, Sony have realised that it would be trivial to build a PC client for it and hoover up some more revenue. This doesn't represent a shift away from consoles, obviously not!

Also when it comes to streaming games, you seem to be playing fast-and-loose with where the PC fits in to constitute a win for PC gaming. So for PS Now, that constitutes a move away from console gaming, even though you're streaming from a bunch of PS3 consoles? So in that case you think it's the client architecture that's relevant? Yet with the Shield, you're streaming to an ARM powered Android console.. so I'm guessing that time around, it's the server architecture that represents the win, yeah? Sigh..

Come on mate, streaming games over the net is not traditional "PC gaming". It might be using PC architecture (at the server end, not in the ARM/Android console in your house), but then so does an Xbox and a PS4 these days, they're all x86. Streaming games to a Shield *console* is as close to PC gaming as playing on Windows 10 powered x86 CPU driven console is. I'm amazed that you're even trying to claim that it's PC gaming to stream games to your Shield ARM/Android console.

Oh and when the new Xbox One X is doing full HDR 4K at 60FPS, how many people's internet connections are going to handle that bandwidth without having to seriously compress that video stream? Practically no-one. And when you get to the crazy FPS, low latency and bandwidth requirements that PSVR requires, yeah... you can forget trying to stream that mate.

Console gaming isn't going anywhere. E3 is currently showing you that.

Tbh I'd be surprised if it did get the streaming ability, for starters it doesn't even have a web browser and I don't think they really want to distance themselves from platforms in any way they can. Also isn't the paid streaming service limited? I tried looking it up, but all I could find was geforce now for £7.49 a month without any mention of the hours you get out of it, and older stuff describing it being $25 for 20 hours. I distinctly remember news on nvidia offering multiple tiers with mid range performance to high performance graphics (it mentioned a 1060, 1070 and 1080 tier) with limited hours, but for the life of me I just can't find any mention of that at all. Streaming from your PC would be kind of cool, but streaming online has it's issues, it's been costly and something that has put other streaming services out of business.
Leonintelex
7 Jun 17 #78
The Shield streams PC games from your home PC to the TV. Gamestream (the paid service) is PC games streamed from Nvidia servers powered by GTX 1080s.

Not to mention Steam boxes and Steam link.

It's PC gaming through and through and removes the need to have a traditional console.

Sony are responding to this by taking the unprecedented step and allowing you to access PS Now and their IP via your PC. Trust me, the writing is on the wall. Pretty certain that if anyone is to go the way of Sega (multiplatform publisher), it will be Sony and certainly not Nintendo.

I really couldn't tell you about local co-op games for xbox one or ps4, i dont play either.
I prefer nintendo games if i'm going to console it up.
you seem to have missed my point of the console being to high priced and thus incapable of being a deal.
If i want to get portable I steam stream or play on my tablet or phone.
If i want to LAN up i have a laptop.
A company reaps what it sows, I dont trust them to release enough good games to make the initial outlay for the console, I base this on the fact I'm relieved I never bought a wii u.
I will probably one day buy a wii u when they hit a reasonable price for the small selection of games it has.
maybe one day i will buy a switch when the games available make the initial outlay seem reasonable.

Streaming games is not what I or most people would call "PC gaming". The PS4 supports game streaming, but it doesn't make it a PC. The nVidia shield offers some of the convenience of a console but it's far removed from actual PC gaming.

I'm sure some games are more 'portable friendly' than others but I find it odd that so many people seem to rate BOTW as that kind of game. To me a big AAA game like that is best experienced in the best setting possible i.e. a large TV, comfortable seating and ideally a nice sound system. To me to play such a game squashed up in a busy noisy train or bus on a screen only slightly bigger than a smartphone would drastically compromise the experience. I think the reason (many) mobile games are so simple and shallow in core gameplay is so they can be played on the go easily where they won't have 100% of your attention....
Leonintelex
7 Jun 17 #74
PCs never really were suitable for the living room. Not anymore, it is just as easy to stream to your TV as it is to plug in a console.

I had a PS3 and like many others who jumped to PC have no desire to buy a PS4. I can stream most AAA titles to my front room. It cost me significantly less as games are so much cheaper and the performance is night and day better. Also having expensive hardware is no longer a barrier, with Nvidia gamestream you get gtx 1080 performance for £5 a month on a £150 Shield. That is a huge threat to console gaming. Especially once they move to releasing the latest titles.

At least Nintendo are trying to differentiate by targeting a new market. And if Nintendo implement gamestream (it's a a shield with a screen) then it could be the final a nail in the coffin for traditional consoles

Microsoft know this is becoming a real threat hence the reason for the Scorpio and crossplatform PC play of their exclusive titles.

7 Jun 17 #73
Absolute nonsense. Consoles and PCs have co-existed for decades and serve different demographics and markets. This isn't going to change anytime soon.
2minutenoodles
7 Jun 17 #72
You are obviously not the demographic and that's fine. You see I can already count a lot more than 5 good games and these games mostly all support local co-op, something that is dying on other platforms and in my personal opinion, the best way to play a game. These are also all portable so with your logic, I struggle to think of 5good 'local' co-op games On Xbox and PS4. I assume there are more than 5 but none stand out like Nintendo titles (Rocket league comes to mind) and then none of them are portable so depending on what console you buy and what games you are into and how you want to play; cost per game varies per individual. I remember in 'the good old days' stuffing my PS1 in my backpack to take to my friends house and play link up command and conqeur. It was fun. Now I can just take my Switch and we are already set-up for the same type of social gaming.

Why do people not understand that the Switch was clearly designed to compete with tablet/mobile gaming which is a huge market with massive growth potential.

Console fanboys needn't worry about the Switch, it isn't a threat to their beloved console. Nintendo are not even going after the same market!

The biggest threat to traditional home consoles is PC gaming which is making them practically obsolete.

That's because I don't want to be ripped off. For less than that I managed to fairly recently get Super Paper mario (Wii), bayonetta 2 and another zelda game for the wii U new. All solid games. No game is worth £50 imo, especially if DLC costs more on top of it. If you think otherwise that's fine, but I don't really want to support companies milking us. Once it gets accepted, there's no turning back. Of course other consoles have done similar on release too in which case I'd also be tempted to say wait. BotW will always be around, I can wait. I've heard from others that the DLC doesn't provide enough for them after already beating the game. I want nintendo to be competitive.

Yeah I've not taken the switch out the house yet but it's great to be able to carry on playing Zelda away from the TV. I guess this is also theoretically possible with the Wii U but Zelda on the Wii U gamepad looks pretty poxy.

People think they don't want the handheld aspect of the console as they don't intend to take it out of the house but being able to play anywhere is great, even if this is just around the house. It was an underrated feature of the Wii U that actually works properly on the switch.
westy90
6 Jun 17 1 #64
For me the switch is a hand held console I must have used it 90% handheld and its never left my house, the fact that I can use it while I put my lad in bed and wait for him to sleep, while mrs is watching hollyoaks and essex and when Im in bed is ace Iv put 120 hours in zelda where as on wii u it would be more like 30hours. To me iv no regrets buying it day one, but its all down to lifestyle and preference. I have a wii u but as soon as I left the room the gamepad lost connection which was the reason I jumped on switch, If I do get free time it will be spent on my PS4 which is what a home console is all about.
2minutenoodles
6 Jun 17 1 #63
I agree with everything you say from a home console perspective. All of those games can be played anywhere on Switch, if you don't plan on taking your Switch out of the house then I would agree to not buy one yet and get a Wii U if you can get one very cheap and it would have to be very cheap considering it isn't supported anymore. The switch is as good as I say it is though, playing any way I want isn't a gimmick or novelty it is freedom well worth the money and the Wii U ports are all enhanced and with added content or features.

I could go on Nintendo ate a big company but could get bigger if they listened to their supporters. it doesn't make sense and the fact I have a sealed switch sitting here contemplating weather to open or not as I think it's going to tank same as Wii u did is disturbing

True I do hope there is some implementation of 'motion-control only matches' or at least symbols for what players are using because it would be interesting to see if one way is superior. Stands to reason that controller is better (definitely easier) but I had no problem winning with motion controls and I have a feeling it's actually pretty close as the game feels more natural with motion controls imo probably because it was built from the ground up with that in mind I assume

Arms is great fun and does require Strategy when you get better as spamming won't work against a skilled player. The big issue I have found is being able to turn motion controls off. This is cheating (in my eyes) if one has motion off and not as fun. Obviously I can flick an analog stick with my thumb quicker than throwing a real punch and therefore you are then faced against a super human.

I loved it, the most fun I've had with a new game in years no doubt about it. The motion controls actually work.. properly! May well be the first game ever I can say that about. I think any spam can be countered the game is actually really deep, people were just using cheese tactics in the test punch while everyone was learning. I personally cannot wait definitely more excited for Arms release than any other game.

No, I half see where you are coming from but I believe the Wii U was poorly marketed and that there were amazing games on the console that didn't reach half the amount of players they deserved due to poor console sales. Getting the chance to play them on switch is a really good thing. Good games take years to develop and the switch was rushed. Ports are an easy way for Nintendo to boost their library while they make new Switch only games and I expect and expected to see ports of most of the Wii U games while they are being made. However it is the same reason I was disappointed today to hear that Nintendo are not giving us a real Pokemon game (yet) but then if they did I suppose the 3DS could suffer and like every business. Money comes first.

Only someone who hasn't played BoTW would say that. It's a complete (and massive) game that's clear as day when you play it. The DLC is truly EXTRA content, it's not just some day one stuff cut from the game to be sold later. DLC done right... and i normally hate DLC as much as the next guy

Imo you make it sound way better than it is. I mean if that's what you want then fair enough, but honestly, I think most people are better not getting it yet. As for the games, well:
Zelda: Is also on the Wii U. This was basically the only game to get the switch day 1 and really it's just not a good reason. Personally I got a Wii U and can play the zeldas I missed out on. I may get BoTW on the switch if I get one down the track, but I could just get it for the Wii U. Though Imo £50 for a game that will charge for DLC is a rip off no matter how good it is.
Mario Kart: Exactly the same as what's also on the Wii U. No real reason to get a switch.
Splatoon: I don't see it offering much more than splatoon 1 already offers
Arms: Personally I think it looks gimmicky, but there's a game for everyone.
Mario Odyssey: Definitely one of the more original titles to come, but it's sad how long you need to wait to play something actually unique...
Monster Hunter XX: Good to see, but really just a port
Pokken: This is what I'm glad to see. However again it's basically the Wii U version and frankly the fact that they didn't include DLC characters for the Wii U when they released them in arcades in japan is pretty ****.

So basically if you really want a switch then by all means get one, but otherwise it's a system full of ports which is hardly worthy of the praise from some of nintendo fanboys. I don't usually go 2nd hand, but I couldn't ignore that getting a flopped console was still much better value with more unique titles than the switch. The switch needs more time to mature, and frankly it might be the first nintendo console that I've waited until the revised system comes out. Though it's a shame that I'll miss out on the splatoon pack, the controllers kind of like nice.

If the switch had a unique pokemon title coming, that would definitely help it out, but it doesn't yet. So really there's no harm in waiting rather than paying more for a console that underperforms.
derp1664
6 Jun 17 3 #48
Estimates put the Switch at up to 20million units sold year one so it will easily surpass the Wii U, probably within the first year. Making new games takes time and given the Wii U small install-base why not release ports until more games are ready, most people haven't played them anyway. The new games so far have been spectacular too, Zelda and Arms for me personally are the most fun I've had with any games in years.

Wouldn't bother buying one yet. And as why people are going mad about getting one is beyond me. Still shortages but why? The fact as I've got a brand new one sitting here thinking about returning it due to the fact looking what's out and what's coming out. May Aswell get yourself a 100 pound wii u and gave done. The switch will end up same way as wii u and then it's goodbye Nintendo you don't think it's worrying that all the games coming out have already been out in wii u??
2minutenoodles
6 Jun 17 1 #46
Why would you buy one without looking what is coming out first? Wii U isn't fully portable and therefor not comparable as by function they are completely different. The Switch is a handheld with the perk of beaming to the TV and shouldn't be looked at like a 'home console' primarily as it is only half of what it is and can do. As for the games, the lineup is strong, very strong. Zelda, Mario Kart, Splatoon, Arms, Mario Odyssey, Monster Hunters, Pokken and if that doesn't appeal to you then you should never buy a Nintendo.

Had no issues with hardware. I got the second batch which came back in stock though. First thing I did was put an orzly glass screen protector straight out of the box. Really nice screen and now impossible to scratch with the dock. I think the console is worth buying just for Zelda, something about the freedom of playing a proper game in handheld mode just feels right. They say to fully complete Zelda properly it will take about 300 hours. I would say though a Pro controller would improve the experience when playing docked. The joycons are nice but the pro is really nice.

all Switches are limited edition, there are many reasons for that, here are 3;

1) far fewer switches will be sold than ps4 or xbox one.
2) very few will survive a decade and become a retro collectable.
3) they are all very limited... because they forgot to put any processing power in them... so they cant handle much.

unfortunately if the Switch follows the previous couple of consoles then it will only have about 5 good games in its lifetime. at £300 that means the cost per game is massive. lets say splatoon 2 is £50 bought separately, that leaves
£250 ÷ 5 = £50
so you add £50 to the price of splatoon and the other 4 good games, this makes each game come out costing £90 - £100
and then if like me you dont like Legend of Zelda (I have repeatedly tried to get in to it since the snes all the way to the wii but i just find it dull) it means there is probably only going to be 4 games for the console.

Price per game is awful. I haven't even got to the Wii U yet because the only thing I wanted to really play on it was Mario Kart, maybe splatoon because it didn't seem too bad, i cant justify £230 just for 1 game.

I just think by definition of price per game Nintendo Switch is incapable of being called a deal when compared to xbox, playstation and pc.
Now i'm not a fan of xbox but if you are console inclined couldn't you get a xbox one with 3 games, 12 months live (so more free games) and still have change from £300 if you wander into most places at the moment?

I bought mine at the end of April and I haven't played it since I played a few hours of Zelda and went "yup I'm bored of this" as I put about 10 hours into the Wii U version already. MK8 I played to death on the Wii U, Splatoon 2 is pretty much Splatoon Deluxe, plus Nintendo's Online sucks so I'm not interested in it.

They've delayed the Premium Online service until next year, I wouldn't be surprised if Mario gets delayed too. We all know Pokemon will be a 3DS game as that's the way Gamefreak work, they lag behind a couple years and I wouldn't be surprised if proper Pokemon never comes to it, that or they do something dumb like make it Handheld mode only.

Then you have the Dock which sucks, mine has scratched my screen, the JoyCons are terrible, they're too small and they wobble about while hooked onto the Switch. You cannot use Wireless headphones, there is only one 3.5mm port on the console, which sucks if you mainly use it docked, even then the quality and volume from it sucks and there is no port on the Pro Controller either.

Where is Virtual console? Nintendo needed to have that to keep people busy during the lul, but we know now it's not coming until 2018, if at all.

The console is a disaster like the Wii U was, on top of that it only has a Tegra X1 inside, which is less powerful than what is in a Smartphone that came out this year as its a 2/3 year old Mobile ARM chip itself. I remember my iPad Pro from 2015 being benchmarked against the X1 and winning by miles.

They needed a console with parity to the PS4 at the least, that way third party developers could just port their games over. Instead we're having what happened to the Wii, we're getting FIFA 18 which is the PS3/360 version and with missing features.

I'm gonna play Nintendo games on it, but they're few and far between and it is just proof that Nintendo need to get rid of their hardware business and focus on software.

Sadly the dock isn't anywhere near that simple, hence the lack of clones available. You can get new smaller casings for the guts of the dock (I have one) but the board itself has yet to become available from 3rd party.

Looks like others have links already posted. Yes, it's Jap only at present, but I didn't say it was otherwise, just that I'd seen pics and that would be the one which could make me bite - if I didn't own a Switch (neon) already.

I'd love to get one of these. But it would just be for Zelda - and even as amazing as that's meant to be, I just can't justify that much money for one game.

That and I think there's a few hardware issues to be solved (connectivity, scratching etc.) before I buy a Switch. I'll stick to my PS4 for now. Great price for those buying though.

Still pricey, especially for download only, though I heated it simply because it's the best Switch deal I have seen since Gameseek underpriced it before launch. Not for me as I wouldn't use the portable mode and as a home console it's the weakest of the three. Maybe when it's back to the £199 it should have been all along I'll give it a shot...

Yeah I've seen those, but Jap only. No confirmation outside (yet) by that I mean for the console bundle

Decent spot, decent price, but, the Splatoon themed Switch console I've been seeing with a physical copy of Splatoon 2 would be a far, far more attractive proposition.

Links?

The only 'custom' console I'm aware of is the new Monster Hunter XX one which hasn't been announced anywhere but Jap

I want this for splatoon but I like to have physical copies for collection and it's a shame we're not getting the same bundle as Japan.

If it had the splatoon joycons with a physical copy, I'd buy it without a second thought.

I won't be buying it until they give me a good reason to purchase a 3rd Nintendo Switch..... (The awkward moment when you have 2 in the house)

I also have 2 Nintendo Wii U consoles.... They call me Noah.

Looks good, heat added. I personally won't be buying it until it's £200.01 and bundled with Mario Kart 8, Zelda, Mario Odyssey, Uncharted 5 and Halo 6. (y)

It's a shame they take money up front. Bit skint atm so have a preorder in with Amazon instead, without a £20 off code unfortunately. Great for those with the cash on hand now though, heat!

Would of been much better if it came with the Splatoon coloured joy-cons.
