Ordered mine on 9th July to be collected at the local O2 store and it still hasn't arrived 11 days later. I received a text on 9th July saying there was a delay as it was out of stock, but I'd get it "soon". Have chased O2 customer services a number of times about what does "soon" mean and have been told their system is showing my order as out of stock and that their system doesn't tell them when I am likely to get the phone; all they they said was wait for a text. All rather annoying as the O2 website still says delivery in 2-3 days.

Yes, you put a sim card in thats not o2 and boot the phone. It'll then give you an option to enter your unlock code

Even if you have the phone already, I think you have 14 days to return it? Not sure at who's cost though.

My wife had a G2 which just broke and seems fairly happy with the camera so far after a week, but I think it would be unrealistic to expect it to be quite as good as the G3 which was highly regarded for a flagship in its time. As usual the weaknesses will show up in low light situations (esp. as lacking the OIS the G3 has).
stevesuk
10 Jul 17 #192
Thanks, ordered one to replace my wife's G3 (which it still fine, only it doesn't have enough storage or RAM these days). As a budget phone, the best thing about her G3 is the camera, which takes far better photos than my newer Wileyfox. So I'm hoping the G5 won't disappoint with its camera  She's not a demanding user, just wants a phone that can handle Facebook and stuff, plus take half decent pictures.

Edit: if you use QuidCo, you can earn enough cashback to cover the eBay unlock fee

AFAIK the Moto G5 doesn't have Turbo Charge like the Moto G4 has, it's just faster charging than your normal charging.

Good question, I'll test this out this evening and will get back to you.

I am finding the phone nice and fast . Basic Android with simple launcher feels nippy.
the CPU is a good match for the ram size.
Last phone was a SD410 with 1.5 GBs - this feels noticeable upgrade - But Samsung UI is a bit naff

I would get a better CPU before going to 3GBs....but i am a medium power user . I never get to 50% batteries by end of day

I am not saying you can not I was saying you it is struggling. It will be very slow ...
Run the newest Android and install other apps which is running on the background such as Whatsapp, Yahoo, facebook, Gmail, Googlemap, Citymapper along with other bank apps. Now check the ram usage .. It will almost full. You will see the impact when you start browsing. It will be very slow defeat the purpose of having 4G connection in the first instance.

A lot of comments on this forum asking how good is this phone, and a few knockers.

This is a typical review which led me to buy it.

http://www.techadvisor.co.uk/review/android-smartphones/moto-g5-review-2017-3655319/

I found the same with other reviewers such as What Hifi, cnet, Techradar etc..

It may not suit everybody's needs, and it certainly doesn't compare to a top end phone at £600+, but I was looking for a phone at no more than £150 price point, so was pleased to find this deal at £120.

Whether it suits anybody else is about personal requirements and how much they want to spend on a phone!

Bought the below one for my mother back in April and so far so good no turning yellow like most transparent style cases (its flexible round the edges but harder at the back so not like the other cheaper flexible cases which go "baggy" after a while). Been the usual dropped a few times, always in handbag coming in and out getting scratched. Bonus that it actually is a 2 pack so at least you have a spare. Went for transparent as she really likes the keep the colour of the exclusive O2 to show through.

Amazon Sparin G5 Case
Also bought the below glass screen protector and again 3 months in and fine. Bonus again it was a 3 pack.

They retired Migrate because stock/Motorola Android in later versions has a feature that made it redundant, though I confess not sure where it is, unless they mean the G-account back-up feature which does seem to keep just about everything.

The Motorola G5 comes out top of the charts in the budget phone category with most professional reviewers, as did the G4 before it. It does what it says on the box, but it is in the up to £200 category so you can't compare with say an iphone 7 or Samsung Galaxy S8. Haven't seen the G5 before at much under £149 since it was launched in March this year, which is why this particular offer caught my attention.

As I said before my local O2 shop allowed me to buy it for £119.99 without an additional £10 PAYG sim top up; but the conversation went along the lines of me saying I didn't need a new O2 PAYG sim and the salesman accepting that. If you buy it on line then you seem to have to select a new O2 PAYG sim to get to the checkout, but you are still only charged £119.99 at the checkout. After unlocking I put a 3 Network PAYG sim in, but what you choose really depends on how you intend to use the phone.

What sims are being used instead of o2? I saw an advert for one which when u top up data it never expires.
estjaydee
2 Jul 17 #138
You can but honestly I wouldn't bother.. I would only use this feature if my phone was 8GB or under.. its more of a chore than anything.. it will make your phone overall run slightly slower.. you wont be able to use the SD card if you take it out of your phone either.. and it causes some apps to freeze because once moved to the SD card as internal storage it causes issues when the app tries to update. 16GB and above should be enough to just have your external storage for photos, music and video. however like I said for 8GB phones this feature is useful.

Just used the unlock link from Jazzuk777. Ebay seller unlock_phone_4ever, cost £1.79 and I had the phone unlocked and working on another network within 20 minutes of placing the order. You send them your IMEI either as a comment when you pay or as a follow up message to the seller and they send the unlock code in a message back to you. So total expenditure now £121.78 to get a sim free Motorola G5.

In answer to a few previous comments.

Just bought the phone on this deal from my local O2 shop. I parted with exactly £119.99 and I didn't have to pay an extra £10 for top up of an O2 PAYG sim.

The only downside I can see is finding a reliable unlock supplier as being a new phone some of the big unlocking companies don't yet have it on their default list of phones they supply unlock codes for.

Unlocking a phone does not affect the manufacturers warranty, there is a lot correspondence elsewhere confirming that.

Getting price matching from another supplier may well prove a challenge on two counts. Firstly the O2 phone is blue rather than the standard issue grey/gold. Secondly it is locked to O2 whereas the likes of John Lewis are selling them sim free.
Gordon.Bell
2 Jul 17 #128
If you use Ebay, yes you can unlock it immediately. The 12 months relates to asking O2 to unlock it.
barely_james
2 Jul 17 #127
Quick Question, Can I unlock this phone straight away when I get the code then? Google seems to say something about waiting 12 months before it can be unlocked from O2?

My partner had the Moto G5 3gb model from Amazon and had real problems using an SD card for storage. The SD card was up to spec and fast enough to be used, but would corrupt when used in the phone (although was fine in another android device and on my laptop).

We looked for a solution, but it seemed to be an issue affecting a number of people.

https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5-plus/help/sd-card-corrupt-issue-t3583012

If you're going to rely on the SD card for storage might be best to do a little research and identify a card that will definitely work and not be affected by this issue.

One thing that nobody has yet pointed out is that the G5 is a 5" screen which I think is a great size for an everyday phone. The G4, by comparison is 5.2".
I have just taken loads of holiday photos using the G5 and they were actually better than those taken with my Canon camera, I have been really pleased with the camera.
I bought the blue version when O2 first offered the G5, some 6 months ago. It is a beautiful colour!
To sort the screen, I have been using a good quality screen protector bought for about £7 off eBay. That has worked superbly and seems to keep clean and pretty smudge free as well.
I have found the finger print recognition doesn't work that well but that's my only complaint after 6 months ownership.
lmcshera
30 Jun 17 #99
I did this on an earlier model, worth noting it has to be a decent speed SD card. If you put a really old one in it can refuse to us it as internal storage (external only), or the card will bottleneck performance.

What's the verdict on this Vs the G4 from anyone that's had both?
jazzuk777
30 Jun 17 2 #97
You can't 'move' apps to the SD card with this - you have to set/format the card as internal storage and then they install on it rather than the phone as they are fooled into thinking it is the phone. You have to do this with a fresh card and you'll need to uninstall and reinstall apps afterwards.

UKPokemonMaster
30 Jun 17 1 #95
using the SD card as internal storage is useless. I have tested this both on Android 6 and 7. Android 6 was on a Moto E2.
Apps that can't be moved to SD card when it is in external mode will still no be able to move even when the SD card formatted as internal. It makes it even worse for apps like Google Play Music where you can normally save music to SD card, but this option is not available when the SD card is formatted as internal! Just dreadful.

Have had to reformat 2 SD cards and move the backed up data back. When the SD card is formatted as internal, I couldn't even move all my backed up data, using a computer, to the Moto E2 because it filled up while copying, and did not use the SD card as an extension!

Might be useful for a few Android phones which have not enabled moving apps to external SD cards, such as Wileyfox phones! But I still don't recommend formatting SD card as internal storage. You have been warned!

Biggest shame to me on this phone is no Gorilla Glass which is a backwards step from (all?) previous versions. But great price still and heat definitely deserved. Think wife is happy with it to replace LG G2 that suddenly won't charge but will heat up the USB port/USB plug to a great temp (anyone any ideas how to get photos off it when battery is at 4% and no SD slot and USB not working? Currently I have an iphone 5 (or 5s) that was given to me by a family member. Not a slave to apple but never had Android. I like a phone that can play music, podcasts and take half decent photos, that's it. Always fighting for space on the iphone so the fact this has a memory card slot (and a replaceable battery) is a massive plus.

Any reason why I shouldn't buy it?

Single Sim. The 3gb ram version (Amazon Exclusive) is the dual sim variant. If you see a 2gb ram and dual sim variant for sale it is not a UK model (think France/Germany has the dual sim 2gb ram - not a clue where you would stand warranty wise)

Is no 1gb variant of the G5, can get a screen grab tomorrow if you need one to be sure, which was also from O2 (Sapphire Blue is only available from O2). Maybe confused with the 2/3gb variant, only 3gb variant is available from Amazon.
Or maybe thinking about the G4 play which is 8gb rom/1gb ram or 16gb rom/2gb ram.
dave7

I see Laptops Direct are selling G5's for £149.97, so you could ask JL to pricematch them if they turn down the match on O2.
cecilmcroberts
29 Jun 17 1 #73
Bought a G5 for my Mother few months back. Wouldn't really describe it as slow but fine for the money (I'm comparing to my own Nexus 6P). Never crashed out but one annoyance I have seen for myself was that it's hard to read the screen in bright sunlight (well for those 2 weeks of the year we have it!). Only other thing and really again I'm doing an unfair comparasion was the speed of the fingerprint scanner being sluggish.

For the other comments about not being able to move apps etc what Gordon.Bell has already said covers everything and is correct. Only thing to add would be don't be skimping and placing in a cheap memory card. After android 6 came out quite a few people complained that the devices became sluggish, it wasn't the new Os but the memory card adoption. Don't forgot once you adopt the sd card as internal storage the device will write and read using whichever speed is the lower, which most of the time will be the SD card rather than the native internal phone memory.

On the query about it working on the Tesco mobile network, it will without unlocking. The device I bought for my mother was also from O2 (device was bought as a like new model) and her sim was Tesco Mobile Pay Monthy sim.

You'll really notice the difference.... I had original Moto G and it was great but these latest ones are also great. 2gb ram makes a difference
dave7
29 Jun 17 #69
Good luck anyway..they may not notice. I went into a JL shop and the fussy guy looked on the O2 site which showed a clearly bright blue phone so he had an immediate excuse. It's hopefully different applying online. It's a good idea buying from JL though..they sorted the ghosting G4's nicely, AND give you a 2 year guarantee.
Also buyers may well invalidate their O2 guarantee if the phone breaks down and it's been unlocked...
Hope you get your cash back..will make it a bargain. In fact JL pricematched Laptops Direct when i bought mine-saved £15 or so. laptops direct have a shop in Yorkshire so JL do match them.

29 Jun 17 #65
You're lucky! last time it was cheap on O2 john lewis refused to pricematch because theirs is gray and o2's was Bright blue..any excuse!
In fact I bought one anyway and am not very impressed. The mob's G4's are much much nicer phones.......apart from the screen ghosting which kinda kills them as an alternative. The G5's just a phone, little better than my original moto G apart from the fingerprint thingy. The G5's slowish, crashes quite a lot, and doesn't have outstanding battery life.

Hot for new decent smart phone (though it annoys me that Moto G are now in a higher price bracket compared to the 1st Gen and 2nd Gen). However, I just lost my Moto G2 (which I bought through a Tesco deal on here a couple of years ago for £99, it served me well, gutted when I got too drunk on lost it!!).

Anyway, to let those know that don't mind used, I just got a good cond used HTC One M9 off Music Magpie for £109.99 (£10-£20 discount on some of em currently), I am very impressed with it, massive jump from my old Moto G2.

can you install apps on the SD card?
akramfaisal to Speculator
29 Jun 17 1 #2
Havnt tried on this exact model, but earlier Moto g / e, if you use the external SD as internal storage extension, you can move almost any app to SD.
Gordon.Bell to Speculator
29 Jun 17 2 #22
Android 6 and 7 can now treat an SD Card as internal storage.
This is to help with the problem of apps not running on SD cards on previous versions.
http://gadgetguideonline.com/android/android-marshmallow-guide/how-to-use-micro-sd-card-as-internal-storage-in-android-marshmallow/

The SD card is now seen as internal storage. In this configuration, the SD card is supposed to be left in the phone.
This should allow apps to run as if they were installed onto the actual internal storage as both the internal and SD card are treated as one automatically..

Per the Website:
From now on, the micro SD card becomes part of the phone storage system.

Technically, it can be used for any apps and data. But in Android Marshmallow, normally media files and app data are actually saved in the SD card.

When your actual phone storage is too low, some apps will be moved to SD card automatically. The bottom line is that you should not worry about insufficient phone storage as long as your micro SD card have space.

The pre-installed apps are always in the physical phone storage, not SD card.

You can check the storage usage in Settings– Storage & USB as shown above.

For example, as shown above, my 8GB Moto G 3rd Gen becomes a 40GB phone.

Please note, you can only see the SD card storage here. All other file explorer apps (e.g., ES file explorer) should display phone storage+SD card as one storage.

And again, you cannot specify file saving locations as SD card or phone storage in any apps.

Gordon.Bell
29 Jun 17 #27
True, but there's nothing stopping you occassionally using the Android backup function to be safe. You should use that in case of losing/damaging your phone anyway. I've been using an SD card in a windows 10 tablet to expand storage for years, never had a problem. I do make backups though.

It's a balancing act that depends on how you use the phone.
If your mainly storing photos and videos - keep it as external storage
If your wanting to fill the phone with apps and guarantee compatibility - use as internal storage.

From what I've read the core Android system and pre-installed apps do not get moved. This means that in the event of a SD Card failure in 'internal storage' mode - you would reboot phone, salvage any files on the internal storage and either factory reset, or try to remove broken apps individually.
Gordon.Bell
29 Jun 17 #26
No, it states pre-installed apps do not get moved (and Android itself). I assume this is to ensure all core items are left on the actual internal storage in the event of an SD Card failure. This would allow the phone to boot up and you could perform a reset to clear the apps that no longer work.
melted
29 Jun 17 #25
I don't think you can move the usual suspects like Chrome and gmail to the SD card, at least not on the android 6 phone I tried.
simonspeakeasy
29 Jun 17 1 #24
The issue with this is that, if the SD card becomes corrupt, *all* the internal storage becomes corrupt. So by adding an SD card, an additional point of failure is also being added.
Personally, I would keep the SD card as external storage.
jpslater76
29 Jun 17 #20

29 Jun 17 #23
I bought a cheap paygo phone from them a couple of months ago, you had to select a tariff (I went for the classic £10) but I wasn't charged for a top up at checkout, and I believe the O2 sim card they send you doesn't have any credit on (I didn't try mine).
