Features you'll love:

Expand your device's memory wirelessly – great for iPads, iPhones, iPod touch, tablets, smartphones, notebooks and other devices with non-expandable memory

No need for an internet connection – emits its own wireless signal (Wi-Fi) for you and other Wi-Fi enabled devices to connect to

Stream your media and documents – with friends, work colleagues in a meeting or the kids on a road trip in the car

Store files – 8GB of memory built in, SD card slot on the back

Good for on the move – pocket size (41g) and completely wireless, charge it via a USB port for up to 7 hours of power

Work with : SD, SDHC and SDXC up to 2TB

Maxell Airstash is the first wireless USB memory stick – solving the problem with devices that have no expandable memory

The Maxell Airstash wirelessly transfers your media and documents from its flash storage onto any Wi-Fi enabled device, via its own generated Wi-Fi connection. Essentially a USB stick with a mobile hotspot, it's the perfect companion for devices where the memory cannot be expanded, e.g. iPhone, iPad, Nokia Lumia.

Now you don't need to spend money on the devices with more memory, (e.g. the iPhone 5 64GB model), or sift through your files and delete them to make space. Just switch on the Airstash, search for a Wi-Fi connection on your iPhone and connect. Download the free app from the internet and it acts as a media browser, so any photos, songs or videos you have on the Airstash you can access at a fingertip. Multiple devices can connect to it at any time so you can share your media with friends or colleagues.

It has an internal battery which is charged by the USB which gives about seven hours of use. Even if it runs out of battery you can plug it into any USB port to power it, your laptop or iPhone charger for example. There's 8GB of built-in storage and an SD card slot on the back (can take any SD card format) to expand the memory. This means it functions as a standard flash drive as well as wireless media streamer.

The world's first Wireless USB FLASH DRIVE

AirStash™ is currently the only device to combine the portability of a USB drive, the flexibility of SD card, the power of a media streamer, and the convenience of wireless file transfer.

AirStash™ provides complete versatility with both wireless and USB operation either; At Home – AirStash™ is a premium social multimedia server that gives you the freedom to enjoy and share movies, photos and music.

In the Office – AirStash™ allows you to quickly save, backup, transfer and share large files and documents with the reliability and security of a standard USB drive..

Not really sure of a use but perhaps my phone which now requires a pointy thing and turning off to access micro SD. Update worked fine with W10 laptop and LG G6, only thing was installation of firmware didn't happen until I pulled it out then plugged it back in again, then it happened automatically. Horrible button though really uncomfortable. Copied photo from phone to AS then a video to my AS and played it on my phone no problems. So works well.

I don't have an SD card reader unfortunately, and I don't really want to buy one just to get this to work. I only picked it up as a cheap gimmick. When I try and run the device manager troubleshooter it tells me it's a USB 2 device that might not be compatible with USB 3. Has anyone tried to swap between USB 2 and 3 sockets to see if that makes any difference?

I didn't manage to fix the issue in one of my desktops, so the workaround for me is to remove the SD card, and copy the files via another USB card reader... the main usage was to use it wirelessly on the go once the files were on the device and that seems to be working fine now... in case you want to give that a go.

Same here. Plug it into my windows 10 machine and it just continually mounts, immediatly disconnects and then mounts again. Cant' see any fixes for this online. Shame, I'll be sending it back if I can't figure out a solution.

One of my Windows 10 desktops cannot recognize the USB/card, it doesn't appear on the explorer, but the other 2 laptops find it just find. So my workaround for now, is just to remove the card and use a USB card reader for the desktop that experiences the problem.

Once I've copied the files to the card and put the card back into the AirStash device, it seems to work fine when remote accessing them at least...

AirStash on insertion into USB slot on Win10 computer keeps mounting and unmounting.
Initially could only push in halfway and that seemed to give dialog that AirStash was faulty.
Now, on full insertion, it still mounts and unmounts. Running Troubleshoot/Hardware&Devices
says no issues found.
Any suggestions?

Give it another go these days. I didn't changed anything, yesterday was not working, just tried now and the AirStash appears on the android app and connects fine. I still get a 'scanning for AirStash...' message on the main screen, but below the detected server. Once you click to go inside, it seems working fine... let's see if it lasts!

It did that for me until I updated it in a pc:
https://airstash.com/airstash-support.html

After the update all works fine - and you get the essential settings/home network option too.

In car I can connect to airstash wifi and access it that way, at home it connects to my home wifi.
Great for ipads to watch movies from - just install VLC as well.

Mine did exactly the same thing too but its because you need to update the firmware first but not via the app. Link here was posted in comment no 3 above - https://airstash.com/airstash-support.html You will find the download file at the very bottom. Follow the instructions to the T.

Sony Z5 Premium = Same situation finds the device in the Wi-Fi list and shows the "connected" AirStash sihllouette icon at the top of the screen but when I click on the AirStash app it just spins saying Scanning for AirStash.

Still not found a solution though.
P.S. The app also wants me to turn "keep Wi-Fi on during sleep mode" on . Although this is how the phone is set already .

This is what you are looking for

FIlehub

It will share usb drives.

I have an older model filehub and have been delighted with it.
(It will play from usb or from sd cards.
When travelling in the car, I can create a wifi network so the kids can play on their tablets together.
If you are travelling and are staying in a hotel which charges "per device" for internet use, then connect using this and the whole family can use the internet from this device.
It also is a usb charger.

My airstash is saying no memory card detected even though i put the card in and how do I update this thing
mickael28
24 Jun 17 #108
Yes, it was a desktop. Same behaviour there. A little bit inconvenient, but if I remove the card from the device at least the computer can read it.

The bigger problem I've got now is that the Airstash android app installed in a Samsung Note 4, doesn't seem to find the device (on the latest firmware - air1105.df2). The app keeps spinning with 'Scanning for AirStash...'

Anyone else having this issue, and did you manage to sort it out?

I've been able to connect with an explorer via WebDAV (http://), but when I try to stream .m4v videos, the 4 video apps I've tried (VLC, MX, etc) all fail to open such a format! So many problems with this device... :S

When I plug it on one of my Windows 10 PCs, sometimes it creates two greyed out 'USB Drives' which I cannot use (as I get the error of 'Please insert a disk into USB Drive) and other times it just does the sound that a USB has been connected but no new drives are mounted.

I've checked in control panel-system, and I cannot see any device with missing drivers or any error :S

The item works fine in my wife's PC though, any idea what the issue could be and what I could try to resolve it?

I had used a different card reader before using the airstash USB. Where it didn't mount the USB card via the app, I had thought it needed that update before anything else.

got it working via home network - this means i have wifi with internet at the same time as connecting to the device. you will see a chain link symbol. one i had setup in the setting to connect to home network, i had to close the app and turn off and on the airstash.

update 2: got it working with the mac too - cyberduck.app picked the drive up straight away

update 3: you can use http://airstash00C8AF.local./files to connect via OSX Finder you may need to replace airstash00C8AF with name of your device

update 4: https://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas-reviews/502-file-server-in-your-pocket-airstash-a02-reviewed?start=1

Mine arrived today, excellent for the price. A couple of useful things to know:
- My windows 10 PC did not like the AirStash as a USB storage device and I couldn't do the firmware upgrade with it. I think it must be something with my configuration because it worked fine on another computer. Anyway, if it doesn't seem to work on one computer try it on another.
- Once it is set up you can access the files through a browser connection on either Android or iOS (or anything else for that matter).
- The first video I tried to stream was a high quality AVI file, about 700mb for 2 mins of footage. It didn't work because the data rate is not fast enough to keep up with real time playback. The HD mp4s and mkvs I tried after that worked perfectly. This is probably true of any type of streaming.

For firmware update. I could connect to my device but couldn't read or write to the SD card. Found the link via google, was roughly 5 seconds to update, and works well.

Can plug the stick directly into the PC's usb port and drag and drop to the 16gb SD card (I was using a different card reader at first).

Still no idea why I bought this, but for £7 I could use the SD card.

When did I say I wasn't going to enable wifi on my phone? You're clearly reading between the lines...

You initially said it can't be used on a plane. Why did you write that? You're clearly trolling or you're not very tech-savvy.
InternetBowser
22 Jun 17 #78
So you're going to connect your phone/ipad/laptop to the stick without enabling WiFi? I honestly don't know if your trolling or you genuinely can't figure this one out... Like I said, it's really not difficult to understand, I don't know why you're struggling so much
brendanb581
22 Jun 17 #77
Cheers mate. I did fly recently and I recall them telling us to not use mobiles (in airplane mode) during take-off and landing. I was just unsure about using your own personal wifi network during the flight! Thanks for clearing that up.
brendanb581
22 Jun 17 #76
That really wasn't answering the first question "Can it be used on a plane" - You said no because it uses wifi...

The stick broadcasts it's own wifi signal, which your device connects to. So it can be used on a plane, I was questioning the legalities of doing this.

So think you're getting your knickers in a twist!
InternetBowser
22 Jun 17 #75
If your device doesn't have WiFi capabilities, it won't be able to connect to the USB - It's not a hard concept to grasp...
railwaygun
22 Jun 17 #74
I suggest that the device is fully charged first - ie no yellow flashing light

then follow instructions

Insert a (preferably empty) memory card into your AirStash. You must use a 32GB or smaller SD card for this upgrade.
This is vitally important. You must use a SD card which is 32GB or smaller (FAT32 formatted) for this upgrade. Most Maxell-branded AirStash devices sold in the USA include an appropriate card in the box.
A larger card formatted to FAT32 may work but is not recommended. 32GB or smaller cards are formatted correctly by default.
Connect your AirStash to a computer. It will show up as a USB drive on your computer.
Tip: If there are issues reading the SD card, it might cause the AirStash not to show up on your desktop. Try it again, or try a different SD card. Ensure you are using a high-quality SD card sold by a reputable vendor. "Off" brands and third-party sellers often sell counterfeit cards which do not work reliably.
Drag the firmware update file (air1105.df2 file) onto the AirStash, making sure to put it in the root or main directory and not in a subfolder.
Tip: Make sure the file is approximately 1.2MB in size. Verify you did not download a link or shortcut to the file (if that happens, be sure to right-click and have your browser download the file).
Tip: Make sure the filename is exactly as shown on the download page (linked above), namely "air1105.df2"
Tell your computer to eject the AirStash (on a Windows computer, go to My Computer, right click on the AirStash drive, choose Eject. On a Mac, find the AirStash drive on your desktop and right click on it, then choose eject). Do not physically remove your AirStash from your computer.
The update should begin automatically. This will be indicated by the Status Indicator rapidly flashing yellow and green. Please wait; this process may take up to 2 minutes. If the update process does not begin automatically within 15-20 seconds after you have ejected (step 4), be sure you have ejected the AirStash or done a "safely remove" operation, then disconnect the AirStash from the USB port and plug it in again.
Wait until your AirStash appears as a drive on your computer. This signals that the update is complete.
Tip: If the AirStash does not reappear as a mounted drive on your computer, and you have waited for a long duration where the Status Indicator is no longer rapidly flashing yellow and green: unplug the device and plug it back in; then, allow for any remaining rapidly flashing yellow/green lights to stop, and the AirStash should reappear on your computer.
If the update completed successfully, the AirStash should remount onto your computer and the update (air1105.df2) file will no longer be on the AirStash (the file is automatically deleted after a successful upgrade).
Strongly Recommended: After the upgrade, eject your AirStash properly and perform the following factory reset procedure: hold the power button down for 20 seconds until the green & yellow lights blink and it turns on.
As a final double-check, you can verify the firmware upgrade was successful by connecting to the AirStash, running the AirStash app, going to Settings (the gear icon) > About, and checking "Firmware Version". This should match the version number of the upgrade file you used for the upgrade.
When you connect with the AirStash/AirStash+ app, it will then prompt you to update your AirStash to the latest version, if needed.

I've used a wifi hard drive on a plane and didn't have any problems. You are not meant to use during takeoff or landing but once in air then wifi can be turned on, when did you last fly ?

A note on these btw, I bought 2 and they both don't work in win10 machines as USB memory sticks, they connect and disconnect constantly so the only way to get stuff on them from PC is to take sdcard out and fill it from a card reader... anyone else have that issue ? Tried 2 pc's 1 laptop with 2 different airstash's.
brendanb581
21 Jun 17 #72
Any one else know if this can be used on an aircraft? I'm concerned about the legalities of having your own 'private' wifi on the plane.

Ummm, I didn't understand what you wrote but starting to now.
If it disables WIFI access when in USB storage mode, when plugged in into USB minihifi, I think if I switch the hifi to CD mode, allowing it to be accessible by WIFI using its own battery, change the playlist on the microsd, switch microhifi back to USBmode and play dah playlist with the hifi remote.
I'm beginning to think its probably easier to get another USBstick than beating my hifi with this wireless usb stick...

20 Jun 17 #68
Ah, my bad totally misunderstood. Router connection would be a welcome addition.

Would be great to be able to get root on this device and upload your own firmware. Don't think it has been popular enough to attract enough dev attention.

20 Jun 17 1 #67
No, I was saying that mounting it as a USB mass storage device disables its built in wifi. That's why I haven't bought one myself, well that and the slow transfer rate.

Regarding your point about losing internet access though, I believe I read that with the firmware update you can connect the airstash to your wifi router, so you'd be able to share it without losing internet access.
thekanester
20 Jun 17 #66
What it means is your device connects to this, as if it is a router, so it won't have internet. You can still get internet over the data connection of your phone though, I believe.

If you don't require it to be battery powered, I think you may be able to do that with a TPLink mini router, I don't own one so you'd need to do a bit of research. :- https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-Support-Extender-UK-TL-WR710N/dp/B00APZZ30W

A second hand BT Hub 5A (~£16 on ebay) with LEDE (openwrt) flashed on it makes a good wifi extender, as it is dual band, I used the 5ghz band to link it to the main router to keep the full 2.4ghz bandwith available as an access point.

It has a USB port and you can run an openvpn server on it for secure remote internet access if you wish. It is a little bit of a faff flashing it though:- https://openwrt.ebilan.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=221 and https://openwrt.ebilan.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=138

Reviews of the android app suggest it no longer works with the A02 model, although it is unclear whether the reviewers had updated their firmware to the final version, or not.

which if its a 32bit app then your right it won't work with the next iOS update which will only work with 64bit apps.
Can anyone confirm if its 32bit only or not?
thanks

Quick related question, Does anyone know of a Wifi Extender that has a USB port (So I can plug a USB stick and share/save files with all users connected to it)

Can this be used on a plane? Thanks

No since it requires WiFi

The AirStash device creates its own WiFi signal. Not sure if it is legal on a plane.

I think he meant does it still work if you don't have the special app, which sounds like it is Apple only?

HooToo travel routers are fantastic bits of kit. Easily lets you share internet connections in hotels for example where you may only be allowed to connect one device, these let you have as many as you need.

How big a power bank were you thinking of carrying? ...does it come on a trolly with wheels??

Thanks. That means it doesn't have an internal battery like this AirStash and therefore not as portable.
