The fire crews are expertly trained in EXACTLY where to put smoke alarms and how many. They also provide advice about hazards they see around your home as well as advice on improving escape routes where necessary.

You don't get that in the packet with your smoke alarm. If you feel guilty about accepting the service for free I'm sure the firefighters will point you in the direction of where you can make a donation to a deserving cause that they support.

You can also get the fire brigade to do a free home check where they fit free smoke alarms and give advice.

I'm not sure it's just for the elderly/infirm - when our old brownies went to visit the fire station they said it was available for all that want/need it.

it is open to anyone, done it a few times. they sometimes turn up in the truck too when they drop the chaps off to do the install so good for the kids as well

Everyone needs them, and almost everyone can fit them-no excuses. Min 1 per level and ideally located outside bedrooms (top of stairs) and in a living/ dining room (not kitchen for obvious reasons). 2 screws (or no nails) is all it takes. If you cant do it or a family member or friend cant-then call your local fire brigade.

Dentistry?? hardly the same. I cant do my own dentistry, but i can screw 2 screws into ceiling.

Prevention? Unfortunately not. Smoke alarms are there to warn you once a fire has started. No matter how much advice or education you get-accidents still do happen.

The advice they/we give is 99% common sense (and they/we arnt expertly trained in it), but it coming from a firefighter does hit home harder.

And for the sake of a fiver, why put your families lives at risk waiting for the fire service to maybe or maybe not come??

And as we all know money is tight so if you can afford the fiver go buy them instead of wasting the fire brigades time and resources.

Guys you are both correct. It's only a fiver and is money very well spent! On the flip side I don't think it's an abuse of the fire brigade and I personally have had the fire safety brief from the fire brigade and would comment that it is really very good. Covered loads of stuff I'd never even thought about. Touched on useful things like an escape plan even discussed having an old phone and putting a PAYG sim in it and keeping it upstairs. When it comes to fire safety the more the better I say.

If you live in S Wales don't forget the Fire Service supply free smoke detectors. If you are hard of hearing they will also fit an under pillow alerter.

Yes, exactly, they are the experts, it would be misguided to think you know better than the people that put out house-fires for a living, I'd have thought? They've seen it all and I imagine will be happy to pass on the knowledge in the hope that it helps keep people safe - and keeps them safe too, because if you are able to get out of your house quickly, then they don't have to go into it to try and rescue you.

In an ideal world, everyone/every household would have free smoke alarms/ sprinklers and get a home fire safety check. Unfortunately we dont, so the priority has to go to more vulnerable who probably cant afford, fit and be aware of the above. For everyone who unnecessarily takes advantage of these from the fire service (time and money) a vulnerable person may be missing out. Fact: more fires and fire deaths happen in less affluent areas-mostly where there was no smoke alarms.

Any smoke alarm is better than no smoke alarm. This is cheaper than a takeaway pizza. Priorities. Kudos to all our brave firemen and women.

OK fine, you want to take chances with your life by guessing where to put your smoke alarms and not benefiting from the experience of an expert in how to escape a fire that is up to you. But wether you pay for it or not is not the issue, I'd rather have an experienced dentist do my dental work than some guy down the pub. I would also rather have an expert come and install smoke alarms in the right places and point out any risks in my home. Seeing as the fire service is paid for from my council tax, I don't have a problem with them using the money to ensure people are safe and that they are not forced to risk their lives to go into a burning house to save someone who was too proud to take some advice.

I didn't guess, I read the packet and then fitted it following instructions. I'd be ashamed if I took their time away from an elderly person.
