I realise this depends on the services offered by your Local Council.
But ours collects our food waste in a separate bin and turns it into compost.
I know a another nearby Local Authority allows residents to come and collect said compost for free.
I'd personally rather our household food waste was put to a good use if at all possible.
Each to their own.

...why?

Because of the state of sewers. If people start putting waste down their sinks I can just imagine the state they would get in.

Last time I checked anything that happens in my toilet gets to the sewer without being evicerated. (poo)

I realise, but just think of the increase in food heading to the sewer. At least I've partially treated my waste before I flush!

Best thing we ever purchased in the kitchen.
We moved house last year and decided not to put one in, 3 months later I had to go and buy one and fit it.

Yep. Just spent £91 on a gift voucher for £100 through my corporate discount for this to find out they have no stock. This happens on every B&Q deal I try and jump on. Frustrating! Tried to order over the phone and they confirmed.

I think you'll find this is nothing new. We've been using one of their models for as long as I can remember, and they're hardly new technology! No worse than sending it to landfill - and quite probably better.

hmm my neighbours semi regularly block out shared sewer with flushable wipes and gallons of fat, god knows how worse it would be if they fitted these things or maybe it would be better!?!
Dislodging solid lumps of grease in the pipes make you appreciate the delicate sewer ecosystem! my butler refuses to get out the rods.

I realise that not all areas are the same, but, our council collects food waste for compost. Bones and all!

Best make of WDU great price as well - can't understand why these are not more commonly used - these things pulverise everything so it will flush out via a standard waste pipe

I had this exact model I'd avoid it is very noisy plus it only cuts the food once, as a result it blocked the waste pipe several times requiring a dismantle of the pipework.
I upgraded to the InSinkErator Evolution 200 and its like night and day compared. It's so quiet that the running water washing it away is actually louder than the waste disposal itself, additionally it cuts 3 times which has completely eliminated the blockages.
You don't put fats through a waste disposal unit, any more than you do down a sink. If you're daft enough to do it, you'll do it just as readily down the sink, with the same outcome - an expensive blockage to deal with.

These waste a lot of water. When using you have to keep water running. I have used one for 10 years and my wife would not do without it. But, it promotes laziness and wastes a lot of water. When you dump inappropriate things such as onions it can block pipes. This is a costly affair as often kitchen cabinets have to me moved. It happened to me. Some people just do not accept all things cannot be put down the sink.
Children believe it is "normal" to put things down the sink. When they go to other homes, most of which do not have such devices, they cause problems.

I think as your user name suggests - they are the pitfalls if no common sense is applied when using one - and I'm sure like me, none of those things happen as it is used responsibly.
The benefit we find - is that even though we have weekly bin collections, we do not put our bin out weekly, as it never smells or attracts the normal issues most other bins attract, which is made worse by hot weather.
A WDU used correctly is a god send ! But it also pays to fit the best.

Pros: Convenience & less waste in bins.
Cons: Cost, wastes water, increased sewage waste, waste not used as compost, blockages (they do provide a wrench for minor blockages) & laziness!
For many the pros outweigh the cons, especially convenience.
