Standalone version is going to be running on mobile hardware. Details are sketchy so far but it sounds like the standalone one will have a higher res display than the current Vive but with lower spec hardware powering it that might not be as good a thing as it seems. There were some rumours that the new hardware will have eye tracking and foveated rendering which dramatically reduces the required hardware specs so you never know.
I have owned a Vive since release and can honestly say its an amazing bit of kit. There are plenty of games and experiences out already that justify its existence. My latest find was Dirt Rally, its the best driving game I have ever played and I have been a gamer for 40 years. Might not be the best actual driving game but when you put it in a VR headset with a half decent force feedback wheel its mind blowing.
With all that said I dont think its for everyone yet. Its close but if you are interested I would say try to find one to try out first and have a chat with the person that owns it. Most people that I have try mine are blown away and want one until I tell the the price...

That is the daydream one I believe. It's basically just the Google Daydream headset but no phone required. I assume it will have built in memory so you can download games and movies to it.

I grabbed the Vive with this deal last week - it's part of the Steam Summer Sale, which has now ended. I expect this will also end imminently.
Its it's a superb device, a little pricey, but you are using cutting edge technology. There's is a wealth of games and tools to use at this present time, through the Steam interface. It's a huge, huge catalogue that is growing each and every day - Google just this hour released a tool called Blocks - check it out

The new lighthouses should be out by the end of the year, which is maybe what people think is Vive 2. Same for knuckle controllers.
Knuckles will work with this vive and new lighthouses won't make the existing ones obsolete.

Lots of stuff. You play games with the headset attached to your face (which is more comfy than it sounds) and you really feel as though you are there. You look left, and the world looks left. Same for the right. Full 360 degree tracking.
You interact with the worlds, scenes, games etc. It's so immersive!

Thank you for that, but : Sorry, I should have been more clear. I know what the Vive does! I have a rift. I meant what does Google's tool do, the one he said we should get called Blocks? Ironically I could probably use Google's own search function to find out but I prefer to speak with humans

Blocks is a 3D object builder - so you build whatever you like. Think Tilt Brush (by google also) but with modular pieces that actually piece together to make an end product.

I'm not sure what tilt brush is either. I will have to Google it. But from what you said I'm thinking it resembles Lego : it's software which lets you build interesting things from scratch with modular parts which snap together?
