Global Version Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Snapdragon 625 Octa Core 5300maH 4GB 64GB 6.44". The above price is for Black version, white colour is approx. £226.

8% quidco cashback (aliexpress)

The price is with 1 year UK Warranty (I don't know how good this warranty is, haven't tried it).

Looks a good phone at a very good price for the specs, I have Xiaomi Note 4 and is really a good phone.

If you are on 3 then no 4G for most places as no band 20 on this phone.

Love my Mi Max, will probably upgrade to this version in the next couple of months - while I can still get a good price for my existing phone. Camera is the only negative for me, the big screen and 2 day battery are the real advantages, plus Miui has everything I could want and more and is very stable.

The Mi Max 2 is a step backwards because it has a worse processor than the first one! 625 vs 650. As for the size I find a 6.44" phone fine to hold and use one handed. Can't stand small 5.5" phones.

My only bugbear is that you cannot take it with you on some flights to the UK. I'm taking Turkish Airlines soon (was booked before the new regulations) and 16cm height is the maximum size, unfortunately the mi max is 17cm...

I have an MI max 64gb, the first version and it is a lovely phone. To me it is a bonus NOT to have near field connection as you could have money taken without knowing about it.
My only gripe as it is a metal body phone is that it might not get a WiFi signal in someone's house, while my ulefone power will. No band 20 is usual with Chinese phones and has been no problem for me on three.
My ulefone power seems slightly faster and I find I use both phones still. The MI max is a lovely big picture and a bit like flat screen TVs, once you have 50" you would not go back to say a 32'.
As phones advance there will always be new features, more ram, or latest is dual cameras, which the MI max does not have.
Ali express charge extra for the UK service repair if it goes wrong. I have never had to use them, but it gives confidence when buying from abroad. I recommend the MI max, but I don't need to upgrade my one as very happy.

How would you have money taken without knowing it?
CampGareth to Proveright
28 Jun 17 1 #25
I'm guessing you've not used android pay. Your phone needs to be unlocked for it to work (so someone stealing from you has to touch your hands holding your phone, super creepy and obvious), you also get a big splash screen with a tick and an idealised picture of your card (so mine pops up with a halifax card, plus the last 4 digits), and after that you get a notification with the amount taken, the name of the shop, and the last 4 digits of the card. If you tap that notification you can also see your location at the time.

Honestly there's more chance of someone stealing from you with a contactless card as those don't need to be unlocked with say a PIN, they don't immediately tell you when money's been taken, and even when it shows up on your bank statement you have less information to work with.

TL;DR NFC is a good thing to have.

As noted above, no band 20, but then what the hell does Global version mean? I thought I had finally sussed out that Global version means exactly that it has band 20 (as opposed to Global ROM), so in what way is this Global version?
Philbiker to bigpappa69
28 Jun 17 #30
I think it refers to the UI/ROM - i.e. it's not a Chinese only UI.
ricardocosta102977 to bigpappa69

Global refers to ROM installed. International versions of the phones are the ones you mention (with Band 20).

28 Jun 17 #33
With respect, I've bought four Xiaomi's now, and studied this for more than a year: There have basically been three versions on aliexpress:
1. Original is the Chinese version,
2. Global version has band 20, and
3. Global ROM/firmware/update is without band 20, but with a Global ROM.
Search Redmi on aliexpress and you'll see what I mean. This is the first time I've seen Global version without band 20 (and this is especially strange as this Xiaomi Online store has always used the terminology above). I'll try to mail them to ask, now that I think of it..
badboyofrock to bigpappa69
28 Jun 17 #35
As far as I know, that would be the case if it was a redmi device, but with mi devices, I believe global version refers to the global rom preinstalled. There is only one mi device with band 20, which is the mi note 2. I'm happy to be corrected.

28 Jun 17 #34
We too have 3 Global versions of various phones, and this is definitely not a Global version other than the ROM. Bit of leeway on the seller's description.

Mi phones can easily be flashed to global roms provided the bootloader is unlocked if its not you will have to request it quite easily done.
bigpappa69
28 Jun 17 #38
That would have explained it, thanks, but at least in this review the Redmi Global version (to refer to band 20) terminology is used for Mi. I wish the vendors would be more consistent...

http://www.techadvisor.co.uk/review/android-smartphones/mi-mix-review-revolutionary-xiaomi-mi-mix-is-breathtaking-discount-3652484/
"The lack of a Global edition of the Mi Mix is a real shame. Up until the release of the Mi Note 2 (for which there are standard and Global editions), all Xiaomi phones lacked support for 4G FDD-LTE Band 20, aka 800MHz or the one band used by O2 and any virtual mobile operators that piggyback its network ( GiffGaff and Sky Mobile , for example) for 4G connectivity in the UK."

I had the original Mi Max, absolutely great phone, never had to worry about battery life as it just went on forever. Great screen for media, loud speaker, fast enough to run everything android perfectly. The only negatives were that the back scratches super easily if you haven't got a case, the camera isn't worth your time and the front screen is ridiculously fragile. If you drop it and smash the screen no one will fix it for you, I even ordered a replacement screen and they still couldn't do it because of the glue attached to the LED panel.

If you're gentle and don't mind a lesser camera then this is the perfect media phone in my opinion.

This was a concern for me to as i have a 6.6" screen Huawei Honor Note 8 and decided to take my Galaxy Note 3 instead.
I flew with Turkish airlines last month and noticed the airport staff rounding up all oversized devices and putting them in one suitcase.
So i thought i'd ask them what happens with those devices, they told me they put them all in one case and gets put on board for pick up upon arrival at destination.
This didn't make sense to me as it defeats the whole object of the exercise, but maybe its true, not sure but i thought i'd put it out there.
Szabster
28 Jun 17 #44
Putting them in one suitcase? I have a feeling they wouldn't cover damage that occurred during transit and let's face it without proper padding I don't think they would survive. Thanks for sharing this with me, I think I will not risk it and buy a mi max...

It's downgrade. I had mi max over Xmas for a month, now I bought redmi note 4 with same specs as this. It's much slower in real life, whatsoever Xiaomi claims. 625 isn't really upgrade over 652. Trust me, I had them both. Note 4 with sd625 struggles with some multitasking, audio over Bluetooth not very pleasant when it lags... Never had issue with mi max, it was just too big for me...

Gearbest has the hold mi max 2 for £228.35.
http://m.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_617055.html
I know it's more than the one from Aliexpress but the reviews on trust pilot for that site are shocking (and not in a "this screen is shocking" way). Reviews for Gear best are mixed but generally good.
There's another store, "eglobal central" that sell it for a similar price but they also get bad reviews. Gear best seem to at least reply to their customers.

Oh yeah, Always use a credit (not debit) card to buy stuff from the overseas sellers, that way your money is safe if the product never arrives (as long as it costs more than £100).

would this be better than a lenovo p2 and would it work on EE 4G?

Infiltrator
28 Jun 17 2 #55
Define 'better' - everyone has their own requirements.
If a 5.5" screen isn't big enough for you then yes it is better - if the P2 screen is adaquate for you needs then no it isnt.
I wanted a screen larger than 5.5" and a battery I didn't have to worry about even if I forget to charge it one night - it does this very well, and as yet I've not found anything it can't do that I need.

I have a BT sim only contract for my 32gb mi max V1, I live in rural Scotland and rarely get reception problems unless away off the beaten track.

I'm confused...

So my V1 3gb Mi Max has a Snapdragon 650 Hexa core processor - but the 650 is the new name for the Snapdragon 618 Hexa core processor.

So the V2 4gb Mi Max in this deal has the Snapdragon 625 Octa core processor - which should be compared to the old name 620 Octa core processor.

So the processor in the V2 Mi Max is a step up from the 620 to the 625 Octa core processor - yes ?

It's difficult enough trying to get your head around all the Xiaomi models without Qualcomm having different numbers for their processors - could they not have changed them completely rather than giving it a number that just confuses folk.

Why would you stick a 3rd party rom on this phone, This seller on Aliexpress sends the phones factory sealed with the Xiaomi global rom software.
strocky
29 Jun 17 #68
Because certain Chinese phone manufacturers (seems to be the BBK group mainly) have allowed the company in question to install the software in the link I put up
damadgeruk
29 Jun 17 #69
Don't doubt that though Xiaomi roms are safe, also well supported. MIUI is one of my preferred UIs.
Infiltrator
29 Jun 17 #70
What has this got to do with buying a factory sealed Xiaomi Mi Max 2 from this particular seller on Aliexpress ? Only issues with Xiaomi phones tend to be when folk buy phones from banggood or geekbuying which aren't factory sealed and the retailer install their own version of the global rom which can contain adware.
strocky
29 Jun 17 #71
Err OTA updates from Chinese server
Infiltrator
29 Jun 17 #72
What are you talking about? You said above anyone buying this phone should install a 3rd party rom - apparently because your completely unrelated phone has adware on it. I just want to know why you think anyone buying this phone needs to install a 3rd party rom.

Do you have some evidence that factory sealed Xiaomi Mi Max 2 phones are being shipped with adware, or are you suggesting that Xiaomi OTA updates contain adware?
Mark300ZX

badboyofrock
30 Jun 17 1 #74
Global rom.
strocky
30 Jun 17 #75
For peace of mind as it appears there is a major issue of Chinese manufacturers and security
xiaomi itself is cited in this article

https://advox.globalvoices.org/2016/11/19/no-surprise-backdoors-and-spyware-on-smartphones-is-the-norm-in-china/

I've got no proof that this phone has any back doors just like you have none that it doesn't

Personally I would now only purchase a Chinese phone if I had the choice to install my own ROM

Why you think that because a phone is factory sealed it couldnt have a potential security issue doesn't make sense
Infiltrator
30 Jun 17 #76
So your original post was aimed at the general Chinese phone manufacturers and not this specific phone or retailer, thanks for clarifying this.
strocky
30 Jun 17 #77
Yes, is there any reason why you've been so defensive?
Do you sell this phone?
Infiltrator
30 Jun 17 #78
No I don't sell these phones, I was on the verge of buying one (see my posts a few above yours) to replace my Mi Max 1 and then I read your post. In your original post it read like you had some knowledge of an issue relating to this particular deal, and the thought of having to install a 3rd party rom put me off.

I've bought 5 phones from China over the past 3 years and from my experiences and learnings on here I now stick to Xiaomi phones, purchased through Aliexpress from reputable sellers and I ensure the phones are delivered factory sealed - as this deal is.

Now I know there's no specific issue relating to this deal I'm back to ordering one as an upgrade to my Mi Max 1.
damadgeruk
30 Jun 17 #79
Does this mean the SD 625 is comparable to the SD 650 that's in your Mi max? Having checked the revisions for the Mi Max 2 I'm sticking with my 4/128gb max, particularly as xiaomi saw fit to avoid fitting NFC.
Infiltrator

http://www.gizmodo.in/indiamodo/why-qualcomm-snapdragon-625-is-the-right-choice-for-xiaomi-redmi-note-4/articleshow/56687317.cms

Yes it looks like the 625 in the Mi Max 2 isn't as quick as the 652 (4gb) in the Mi Max 1 but they've chosen the 625 because it uses less battery power.
damadgeruk
30 Jun 17 #81

Mine has not shipped. I think the black version is still in production (A lot of the sellers had marked it as a pre order) My account status is sitting at 1 day 12 hours left on processing time before the order is automatically cancelled. I wonder if it will ship tomorrow, or if I will get a message from them?

The Global Rom is fine for UK.
Infiltrator

Unbox it, stick in your sim, power it up, select a locale (I use Ghana, others use falklands) and that should be it.

thanks for your replies. I always find them helpful

does your phone have Nougat and could u give me brief specs please if u have time ?
Infiltrator
4 Jul 17 1 #89
Nougats not available yet unless you want to install the developer ROM, but the last update from Xiaomi said the the nougat version of Miui is imminent.

Specs for the V1 Mi Max are similar to the V2 model, except the V1 had a 3gb ram 32 gb storage model, base model for the V2 is 4 gb ram 64 gb storage. V2 has an even bigger battery - I've never yet run out of battery, even if I forget to charge it for one night. You can also install an SD card for more memory, I have 64 gb, can't remember if that's the max or if it can manage 128 gb.
The phone is large there's no getting away from that, but my eyesight isn't what it used to be and I find the screen size and battery life to be spot on for my requirements.
