I'm super jealous of the ppl in this thread as I don't have the money for this card or the time for this game. oh to be in my twenties again :smiley_cat: however this is a top tier title for free so heat from me

You could just wait. The 1180 will offer Ti performance, as will the 1270 and 1360. So 3 generations down the line Destiny 2 will be £1.99 on Steam.saving money all the time you wait.

£700 is in the mid to high range for a 1080ti cheapest is about £650. You also get the game on a normal 1080 and they are about £400 or cheaper now.

Posted a few weeks ago; wasn't well received
On a related note, wtf is going on with GPU prices?!? I've been monitoring them for the last few months, and have seen rises across the board of £5-10 each week.
You're now paying ~£50 more for a 1060 6GB/480 8GB than you were ~3 months ago, whether new, refurbished, or 2nd hand. That's a 25% increase!!

Could be due to Ethereum mining making a rise, but I thought it was meant to be affecting AMD cards. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
johnthehuman to Python1100
15 Jun 17#26
There aren't any AMD cards left, so people are 'forced' to buy nVidia - means they can bump the prices ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
1080Ti hashes at 33MH/s on ETH btw, in case anyone was wondering

Any idea how long I'll have to wait until the prices go back down? I need a new graphics card :P

Is mining it worth the electricity price in the UK?
It's about 110quid a month if you are paying 12p per KW/h and assuming a 500w total system draw.
I was gonna say just wait for the ASICs to come out then there would be cheap graphics cards for everyone. However apparently this might not happen for Ethereum so we might have the problem for a while.
johnthehuman to lomax
16 Jun 17#33
your maths is off, 500W constantly is 12KWh per day. I pay 10p per KWh unit, so that's £1.20 per day, or roughly £35 per month, for electricity.
In that time I can mine just over 1 ETH, which is currently worth around $350, or £275.
lomax to johnthehuman
16 Jun 17#34
Could well be I just used the calculator defaults :). Which power company are you with? best I could find when I switched my power a couple of months ago was 11.9p per KWh :disappointed: .
The power draw could be made lower. I did a quick overnight test on my 1080ti and it seems to hash around at around 31.5 MH/s at 65% TDP. Could probably get the whole system down to 225W. With Claymore this also mines a small amount of bonus Siacoins.
ZEC looks like it may be the better choice at current prices? Apparently it mines better on Nvidia cards.
I have just spent 190€ in amazon.de and i am qualified to obtain the code. 60€ preorder game with a 190€ purchase.

I'm with British Gas, one year collective fix from last year, it's something like 9.8p per unit IIRC.
My setup is a 1080Ti and a 980Ti, both limited to 80% TDP, and a power hungry 3930K  It's my gaming PC that I've repurposed for a few weeks, if I was building a mining rig I would have a much more efficient processor.

16 Jun 17#36
Hmm. I moved from British Gas last year and they offered me nothing of the sort!
Nice setup. I'm using my gaming PC as well. Just sold on the old 970 maybe I should have kept it for mining  .
After trying ZEC I may use that and use shapeshift if I want to hold some ETH. EWBF's miner reports 636 Sol/s at 161W and the 1080ti stays under 65C. A nice side benefit is that the computer remains completely usable while mining. With the ETH miners I tried I was getting stutter while they ran. This way I only need to turn the miner off to play a game.
Might keep an eye out for a cheap 1070 to pop in there for a month or two  .

Would it be silly buying a GTX 1080 now when I don't plan on completing my build until September when I can afford all the parts?
I am very tempted by these deals on at the moment, I can get MSI Aero OC 1080 for £450 then £43 cash back and a free copy of Destiny 2 which I very much intend to buy anyway.
So technically getting a 1080 for £360 which seems like a bargain.

Even with it being likely that AMD will have finally announced Vega by then 360 quid is a good price for a 1080. No guarantee there won't be another deal in 3 months though.
Which miner are you using? It will be interesting to see what happens when the difficulty does jump. If all that hashing power suddenly get's unleashed on other coins there's probably not got be anything left that's worth mining. But as you say until that happens it's free money  .

It's weird, when the 980Ti was the primary card, Windows was practically unresponsive while mining ETH, now with the 1080Ti it's fine.
Good plan with the 1070, ETH mining difficulty is set to double in August so long term might not be so profitable, but for now it's free money
