I got my parents a cheap Digihome 50" 4K TV, and it upscales SD and HD to 4K pretty well, picture quality is certainly better than the 1080p Sharp (Vestel) they had before that.

bought on in black Friday about a year back after vouchers for around £170 as a kitchen TV.I have to say the picture quality is cr$p aswel as the sound. it fells and looks cheap however iy does the job for a spare TV but could never replace the Samsung in the living room

Some 4K TV's are known to give poor results on Sd and HD material, whenever you upscale something it can't magically make it look great. A bad 4K TV is probably much worse than a mid range HD TV for viewing most programming.

They are available at £299 already, so it won't be long.
I bought the 49" Smart Sharp on the Tesco Black Friday deal for £199, I would imagine that and this are both Vestel or UMC. It's tragic, but I was only giving it as a gift so not bothered.

perfectly good TV. people worrying about 4k. stop it. it won't happen on terrestrial TV for 5 years or so even at that stage all the current TVs won't be compatible.. if you want a reasonable TV for watching TV then this is OK at it.

Aren't 4K TVs terrible for normal and HD sources (which most people get) ?

Well I have it set up and it looks and sounds fine, but I don't have it setup like in the shops with a wall full of TV's to compare it to.

this may not be a feature rich TV, however if someone with experience can comment upon its reliability and picture quality then would be really helpful in making a decision...
