an easy way to remove (destroy) solder pads if you don't hold it just the right distance away! Good price, heat added.

The same place as you stuck up the solder, of course.

To be fair, it only takes a minute or two to do so, so they probably did.

I can't believe it! i wanted one of these for ages, i finally buy all the stuff i need to mod my headphones last night, including a £3 desoldering pump, only to find this thread a few hours later! Bought one on click and collect anyway and ill see if this one is better than the one i just bought! Either way i will have a spare!
Thanks OP!

I gather from Bigclive that desoldering wick is generally better thanusing one of these, though at 66p it's worth a punt.

By his own admission, it's down to personal preference. I find the pump certainly has its uses.

Solder wick does less damage to dodgy pads but you can end up using a lot of it just getting an IC out. I use a Soldapult which has a seperate inner spring so much less recoil.

It's very easy to put too much heat into small pads when using braid, and when a component has lots of legs and each one has to be cleaned out to remove it (like you can't just heat and pull) braid just doesn't do it.

In my experience good quality desoldering braid is far quicker, better and reduces the risk of track lift on delicate boards. Heat added for the deal though.

Bought some de-soldering braid a few days ago but will supplement with this. At 66p, why the devil not - thanks OP!!

i thought this was a bicycle bump, so 66p a bargain. but this is not a bike pump. what is it? i am intrigued to know what it does?

Quite the opposite mate. It will suck the air out of your tires. :man:

This youtube clip shows use of this tool and the braid others have referred to in the thread
Wick is cheaper and 100% better than a sucker. Remember the ancient adage, People who buys suckers, are suckers. People who buy wick, are wicked.

You mean solder braid? It has its place but it's not suitable for all tasks and is pretty poor at clearing out deep through-plated holes.
An electric vacuum desolder pump with swappable tips that can take a heated tip is the serious solution.

You can't beat a heat gun and tweezers for removing and replacing small IC chips!!!

Indeed, when I worked as an electronics engineer several decades ago, we used solder suckers all the time. I must have removed thousands of ICs without any problems.
