I have recently bought this package and I got RS to price-match it, making it £709.90 plus they chucked in 6 year RS warranty.
The speakers normally retail for around the £599 mark (checked RS and superfi etc) and the amp is normally around £330 mark with the new model just being released in the last couple of weeks. If this package was bought separately it would cost around £930, so quite a substantial saving.
Both items come very highly rated, the speakers were tested when they were selling around the £1000 mark and were generally given 8-10/10 across the review sites/magazines, and the amp needs little introduction to it's capabilities.
I am wanting to connect this to my TV as well, but having good quality sound for listening to music is important as well.
Another big advantage of this over a regular hifi is the ability to play music from a variety of other sources, eg internet radio, spotify, a NAS drive, etc. Most hifi-specific kit doesn't tend to do this.
The reasoning amongst audiophiles is because these boxes do so many other things they're a jack of all trades and a master of none. Personally I'm sceptical which is why I was asking if this would sound as good as a similarly-priced hifi amp.

Got this receiver on Friday, very impressed.
Easy setup and there's a Dolby Vision upgrade due later this year.
If you want Dolby Atmos on a budget get the Onkyo SKH-410 from Amazon France for just over £80. Mine are due tomorrow or Wednesday.

Thanks for that chap, I think that's the speaker the quite a few recommend over ok AVforums. If you don't mind me asking, what speakers did you pair it up with?
I demo'd the the set up I listed at RS, and I loved it straight away...I'll probably swap out the sub for a BK later on.

I really want this Denon receiver but I'm new to all this. If I get a pair of hifi speakers, will this work well as a hifi if I put it into direct mode? A lot of audiophiles claim that a dedicated stereo amp will give superior sound quality but I find that quite surprising.

You want to use it solely as a stereo amp? Lot of unused awesomeness left alone if you do that.
You can have it set up as 5.1 in one room and 'Zone' 2 extra stereo speakers into a second room.
Had time to play around with mine now.
Works great as 2.0 stereo, even better 2.1 but this is were it gets interesting...
Set up the Onkyo Atmos yesterday making 5.1.2.
Put The Prodigy 'Smack My B**ch' in, switched to surround mode, cranked the volume and WOW!!!

Thanks, managed to get 6 year supercare with MA Mass and paid 25.05 extra for 6 year supercare for the receiver. Total 734.05.

@m12_shakes please name the person who gave you 6 year warranty as well. I just called them, they price matched but refused 6 year warranty with the matched price.

Hey there chap, I mentioned to the guys in store that PT offer 5years on the MA Mass, so they just gave 6years.
With all due respect it's my local RS store, and I don't want to get anyone into trouble. However ring back and state the above and hopefully it will work in your favour.

They wanted £30 odd for the extended warranty on the receiver alone. Pushed for it gratis but they were having none of it.

I also have this receiver - it's fantastic. At the time, I went for a budget setup of Canton speakers which sound great, but will upgrade at some point. Those Onkyo Atmos speakers are tempting...

They're £130 everywhere else so I'd go for it.

I have this speaker set and Yamaha rxv673, got it for 799 Inc atlas sub cable and 30m of cambridge flat cable may 2014. It was a price match by RS. The tall stands for the speakers are nice, but expensive. if you are mounting them to the wall, the official wall mounts are really good for £10-15 each.

great deal OP I've long been tempted by the Mass due to their excellent reviews and the fact they're a smaller form factor speaker (wife acceptable) and one of the nicer looking ones.

I'm running a full set of B&W 600 series.
I tried really hard to get a deal with RS, best I could do was a tenner off with the V.I.P membesrship. Hell of a receiver for £320.

I have the older AVR-X2100W and it's fantastic. When the AVR-X2300W drop to £299 I'll pull the trigger and move my current receiver into the bedroom. :smiley:
