I'm an owner of a 55" LG E6 oled and a 55" Samsung KS7000. to be honest I'm disappointed with oled technology. the detail lost due to the brightness is quite surprising when side by side with the KS7000. then there's the motion. the LG oled is terrible for motion blur. it can be smoothed out using De judder settings but be prepared to see artifacts such as screen tearing on fast moving objects and especially on animated cartoons. the problem with artifacts and motion is a widely reported problem on forums so just beware. Imo the Samsung ks 7 8 or 9 series is better TV in just about every department over oled and is half the price. even the new 7 series oleds are suffering from the same motion problems. I think oled technology still has a long way to go. the better bet atm is still to stick with a high end led. especially for hdr content

What's the obsession with brightness?
The B6, so I assumes the C6 is also, plenty bright enough.
Mine is in a dedicated 'mancave' where I watch movies with lights out. I have watched TV in daylight and still turned the brightness down as a bright picture washes out alot of detail.

just put anything animated on through a sky q box or any source. peppa pig is a prime example my son watches. even with de judder set at 1 and blur set at 0 the screen tears when characters talk. a problem on b6 c6 and e6 and I'd imagine the g6. fast paced scenes on some content has a tearing effect also on none animated movies. if true motion is set to off there is 0 artifacts but the motion blur is off the map terrible on some content but not all. it depends on what fps it's filmed in. the Samsung KS7000 is poor on motion also with motion settings turned off but adding it soothes out the frames better than the e6 and with 0 artifacts. blacks are too black on oled and contrast too strong. this is where detail is lost like I say especially in dark shadow areas. on the KS7000 more detail can be seen. there is no backlight bleed on mine. yes the picture washes out when you move off centre of the screen on some scenes but looking straight at it against the oled e6 the motion is better and so is the detail

Samsung don't sell any OLED TV's
They have QLED but that is just marketing, they are still LCD with the same issues.
FrugalFergal
20 Jun 17 1 #89
Thanks for the great response. The C6 is a great TV. I think there's too much fuss about peak bright and dark. If I had a cinema room, just watched movies or had it placed in a dark corner, I'd get the oled no doubt. It would be bright enough. I have the KS9000. Since you made some excellent points about the oled I'll do the same for the LCD. Firstly they are incredibly bright. Don't have it on dynamic, especially in the dark while watching ads where they switch to a full white screen, Yes it will make you wince. However with a good 4K HDR source, like BBC planet earth 2, brightest 1000nit scenes are just the pin prick twinkle on stars, the sun pearcing between the leaves, glistening of rain drops. It's so subtle and expertly used it enhances the whole scene - just as oled blacks, when used properly enhance the whole scene too. The 1000nit peak brightness of LCDs are only sustainable for a short period on 5-10% of a screen, so when film makers use it properly, say for lightning or explosion effects, it looks nice. It also helps it produce the huge increase in colour. I'd say the peak brightness adds a nice visual sparkle and makes images pop.

The KS9000 series and probably even the new range have moved their LEDs from the side of the screen to below. Whereas before it could local dim the black bars in movies, now it can't and you see light leakage below. That's just an unavoidable problem with the new models. If you're used to OLED you'll be horrified at the sight. However during daylight it doesn't show much and at night I turn the back light down to 30-50% and boy do the blacks improve. Even at that setting the image is bright enough. In fact in pitch black I turn it all the way down and it still looks great, the local dimming, black moth filter on the screen all go to make the blacks look I credible. From and LCD point of view it's nice to have this option but it means either leaving eco mode on or tweaking it each time.

Regarding the curve. It's a none factor. As you say you don't even notice it. I found it very off putting at first but once the TV is on I don't think I've ever noticed it. I'd say to anyone put off from buying and tv because it's curved - don't be.

The built-in 4.1 speakers in the KS9000 are amazing. I have put my old sound bar to the other telly instead.

What I really so hate about the KS9000 is UI is pretty horrible. The navigation is so unnecessarily cumbersome, the PVR function isn't great and I'm looking forward to my Virgin TV box arriving soon.

The smart remote is great though. Overall great hardware, terrible software.

I'd say to anyone looking to buy a C6 or Ks9000 series TV, you are buying into the future. The technology inside these tvs is a standard for the future. Netflix 4K HDR, Amazon Prime TV, 4K HDR blue ray looks amazing. There is a lot of content out there and it's increasing all the time.

Yes they will become outdated soon ut not before you get plenty of use out of them. I would describe 4K 10bit HDR (esp HDR 1000) to be akin to the 1080p standard of the past when we had a lot of confusion with intermediary tech such as 720p, 1080i, 16:10, etc. Ultimately 1080p came out on top and became the defacto standard for HD viewing.

I feel you'll get same 'standard proofing' with these. I can't wait to see the prices of this tech drop hugely over the years so it's mainstream and everyone get to benefit. Once you've seen solid 4K HDR content with proper source material you'll know you're seeing the future.

Interesting comparison thanks. I was a little surprised to read it though, I haven't noticed any judder (i think I set dejudder to it's lowest setting) and I don't feel like I'm missing any detail, but I've not spent any meaningful amount of time with a current 4k LCD, certainly not long enough to make a comparison..(what source material are you watching? I'll see if I can see it - can you suggest anything on amazon prime or netflix?) I did look at the k7000 when I was shopping for the c6, but it looked really washed out (it was in currys so not exactly comprehensive there) I'm sure the K7000 is great and next years QLEDS are shaping up be a real step up. I got OLED fever though and you know, I'm pleased with it.

Recently got this for a similar price and can't recommend enough. Was sitting on the fence for a long time since owning a panny plasma, but this really is leagues ahead. I thought the curve would be annoying, but the 3d is well worth it. It's rare to get that "wow" moment when sitting in your living room, bit this really delivers. Would never go back.

I've got the C6 - and in honesty, it is less searingly bright, take note of the word I used there, you know when you watch something in a dark room then the image goes super bright to make you wince, I've not had that with the OLED. It has been perfectly bright enough in daytime viewing and nightime with 2 lights (6 bulbs) on in the living room,

HOWEVER...

When I first got it, I looked at it and thought, hmm... is it really bright enough? I came to the conclusion that yes it is, but after thinking about it for a while, I realized that because is does blacks so well, dark scenes do look, well, dark...

I've had the TV for a few months now - and not had these initial impressions again as I guess I've gotten used to it. If you feed it good source material, it's plenty plenty bright enough... whites are white, blacks are black and everything in between, it's great.

Bit of an abstract explaination but I hope it helps.

OH and you SHOULD get the C6 - it has the electronics from the E6 and G6. LG will release a Hybrid Log gamma update for the 2016 tellies, but as the b6 is a 3rd party chipset - it might not get the update. They released update for HDR game mode, the b6 update came out several months later. I don't care about the curve or 3d but you know, when you've had it a while, you really cannot notice the curve at all, it's very slight anyway. Banging on about a pointless curve? Why care?

Law of diminishing returns. Of course, what's value to you, may not be to another.

For me, 300 pounds on a pants TV is worthless, and hence a waste of money and poor value.

If I had 1.4K, this would be a good investment, and worth the money for me - better value.

I couldn't agree more. the KS Samsung's are truly a bargain if you get a good panel without backlight bleed. Yes, peak brightness which is a 5-10% of the screen maximum. In "real terms" that would equate to pin prick stars dazzling super bright, the glistening of wet leaves in the sun, the glint of a blade in the light, the glint of glass, the sun dazzling amongst leaves and all the extra colours HDR brings. I can promise you while I sit here typing this message while watching Planet Earth 2 in 4K HDR 1000 on my KS9000 in Dynamic mode, at not a single point did I think wow, this is too bright or I'm blinded. It just looks clean and sharp and literally like SLR photos in motion such is the clarity and vividness in colour, sharpness, detail and brightness. I know OLEDs are marvelous but I've yet to sit in a pitch black room looking at a black screen on my LCD and worrying about seeing greys. In real world situations the LCD panels simply dazzle over OLEDs. Yeah my next telly is 100% going to be an OLED but that's in 5yrs where they've finally surpassed LCD.

Do you not mean: "some folk can afford to buy what they want now, whilst other have to wait ages for the price to drop into their affordability bracket"?

Just because people can (and choose to) spend their hard earned money on something, does not make them idiots. All it makes them is successful and wealthy; and no amount of name calling can take away from the fact that they have a bigger disposable income than yours.

Of course there are some people who may go well out of their budgetary constraints to buy such a TV for egoistical purposes and that is truly sad.

Kanedaaaaaa
19 Jun 17 1 #50
The thing is, all TVs have areas of weakness, and if you're waiting for them all to be ironed out you'll never buy another.

LCDs can go brighter, but lack a certain organic picture quality that appeals in particular to those who loved plasma. OLED solves this, but can't hit the same peak brightness which is becoming a factor for HDR material. The good thing is we've got decent sets in both types of tech now so it really is a case of what you prefer.

Basically the same CPU, just different manufacture of the chips. That does mean the software licensing for them is slightly different which is rumoured to have caused the delays on the B, not the C.

Playing No Mans Sky on my PS4 HDR is lush. I've not noticed any issues on my B6 with regards to refresh rates, but then some people are sensitive flowers.

I mulled a lot over OLED vs KS9000, even saw them running side by side. OLED blacks are impressive but I just found the KS9000 just so much more vibrant, bright and colourful. For me this is like the early days of LCD and the final days of CRT where the best CRTS still had much better picture quality than early gen LCDs even though LCDs were the future. I think at this moment the best LCDs are probably on balance better than the best OLEDs but I have no doubt the next time I buy a big telly when my 5yr warranty runs out will be an OLED when we will have all these early gen problems ironed out. OLEDs as great as they are still arnt mass market. When they are the technology will ramp well ahead of LCDs.

I had the 49UF850 for a week last year. The 3D on these sets, (I've also seen plenty of UH850's,) suffers from a viewing height issue. No matter what height you view from, there is always crosstalk on a portion of the screen. The OLED's on the other hand don't suffer this issue and are much more tolerant to the viewing height.

I would be interested to know the gaming lag figures for non-HDR and HDR game modes. I know there was a kerfuffle with B6 awaiting a firmware update but I believe that has now received an update bring lag down to 28ms or less if I recall.

I believe that the C6 is a different chipset - anybody know where any such updates are in relation to that. If similar then with the added bonus of 3D then I might be on-board.

Is the built in sound setup better on this set than the B6 ?

Do we know how bright these panels go? I know the blacks are perfect but I always wonder how bright the images would be in a reasonably well lit room. How well would i compare to say a Samsung KS9000? I thought the HDR spec has been rejigged for OLED so they only need to hit 500 nits whereas LCDs need to hit 1000 nits to be HDR1000
jaydeeuk1 to FrugalFergal

It'll do 600 cd/m2 (600 nits). The newer OLED sets like the one from philips will go a lot brighter, but you lose the 3d.
jayjayuk1234 to FrugalFergal
19 Jun 17 1 #31
how bright the images would be??

this whole brightness comparison is only peak brightness, which refers to HDR highlights and not typical image light levels.

a standard LCD only kicks out around 200-300 nits.

a sun shining in HDR would be a good example of demonstrating peak brightness, with 600 nits a sun in HDR on screen will hurt your eyes if you stare at it, at 1000 nits. it will still hurts your eyes.. at 2000 nits, it still hurts your eyes. .... and so on

black levels are much more important than how bright the TV can display HDR highlights, the better the black levels the better you see colour

I suspect my Panny plasma (UT50) was giving me headaches as they have stopped since the upgrade.
Wonder if it was due to eye strain or high pitched frequencies emitted by the plasma.

Heat, think this is the lowest price this tv will ever be brand new from a shop with 5 years warranty. Currys stock is getting low for this tv. Personally I prefer this over this years LG TV's, for the 3D alone.

Yes, it's the best 3D TV you can buy, (and will be for a long time.) Worth every penny.

Think I will go for this TV, the 910v was amazing, think this also has the ITV Hub? the 3d on the Oleds is amazing, is the 5 year warranty with Currys or LG?

The 2m HDMI cable is worth it alone just for it's digital clarity. To give it away free well that's just...

Can get an equivalent cable on eBay/amazon for about £4.

It's great to see OLED coming down in price so quickly. I wonder how much this would cost if it didn't have the pointless curve gimmick?
dpc1979 to commenter14
19 Jun 17 1 #19
Ive been eyeing up this set and the Flat panel version OLED55B6V and by all the reviews the curved screen edges it and by the reviews makes the viewing picture work better especially in 3d (yes the B6V does not have 3d to compare).

I was always saying curved was a gimmick BUT according to the reviews it works in this set.
