How would you guys rate these for DIY? They'll get moderate work for about a year or so? Thinking about doubling up on some drills to get me by. Not expecting the world but cheaper than a makita kit

I've bought 4 parkside units including a drill. Had them 1.5 years used quite a bit. Only thing that went wrong is one of the batteries died, otherwise I'm happy with them.

Got a corded sabre saw that has had a lot of use, it's a great piece of kit. My pressure washer is finally dying, but was kept outside for 4 years and used loads so can't moan. Just keep your receipt for the warranty, I had a toothbrush die after 2 1/2 years and they just sent me a new one after seeing a copy of the receipt.

Bit cheeky calling them 20v, they're what everyone else calls 18v with 8 x 3.6v LiIon cells. On full charge they'll be over 20v, but that's not normally how these things are measured.

DeWalt do the same trick with their 18v kit in the US, but at least they describe them as "20v-Max".

I had the Parkside 10.8v (now 12v!) multitool. It was OK and impressed me with it's capabilities, but when I couldn't find a spare battery for it I bought a Bosch Blue on (for about four times the price) and it's a million miles better. Far more powerful and with a much longer lasting battery. Parkside stuff is good for the price, but don't expect anything like Makita or DeWalt quality.
TheLukey21
15 Jun 17 #6
I think you mean 5x 3.6v lithium ion cells which is an 18v battery, 8 would be 28.8v nominal.

I bought the impact driver last year. It's a beast! Used many times driving big old screws no problems. Battery is tiny so I would get 2 for serious work. I actually bought 2 full units last year, even took them to work one day for a specific job that involved about 1000 M6 bolts. Saved me a whole days labour. They were 18v last year but from the picture they are exactly the same, I would bet the batteries would be interchangeable if you bought something else in the range last year.

my dad recently met a German who worked for Bosch, according to him they're (parkside) made at the same factory - wherever they're assembled, he didn't say
FATBOY78
15 Jun 17 #18
ive also heard in the past that parkside were made by bosch
bonzobanana to FATBOY78
16 Jun 17 #38
Parkside are sourced through Einhell, a low cost power tool importer based in Germany. It's the same factories also used by shop brands, and brands like Draper, Silverline etc. However that doesn't mean it's not made in the same factory as some Bosch tools as Bosch import many of their tools now but normally the lower end chinese tools are sold through their 'Skil' brand not Bosch but you do get some in their green tools range.

You can see many of the tools on the alibaba site although some are re-skinned (restyled plastic cases) to hide their origins.

They are perfectly fine tools and sometimes better than Bosch. There was an oscillating multi-tool made by Bosch that constantly failed due to a weak plastic part but the generic cheap versions sold under many brands were far more reliable which often cost a fraction of the Bosch multi-tool price.

Thanks - I've updated the deal title

I can't remember Lidl selling the 20v battery/charger separately - There were always complaints that a battery/charger was included in the price for every Parkside 20v tool
They'll probably sell out of these before the tools on offer - as they're compatible with the previous Parkside 20v tools offerings

I bought the impact driver about this time last year. Gave it some good hammering building a decking over the summer and it was spot on. Used it quite a bit since too and still working like new. It feels well made, solid build quality. Can't really comment on how it would cope with daily trade use though.

The bad people will have thought it long before I did - and if they're doing it regularly, the usual £150+ price tag isn't going to stop them nicking your bike, regardless of what you lock it up with.
One of the worst trick they get upto is cutting one of the hoop style bike stands at 3 in the morning and then taping over the cut with electrical tape. When someone locks their £1.000 bike to the hoop, they take off the tape twist the hoop, pop the bike in a van and replace the tape. All done in 20 seconds and ready for the next victim.

I think it will struggle if the bolts are over tightened, which seems to be the case when a lot of garages tighten them.

I wouldn't buy any of this kit without the batteries. The battery packs are going to fly off the shelf because they will power just about anything with a few modifications. Spending £68 on 4 will give you 8 Ah at 40 volts to run an e-bike. The nearest cheapie Chinese e-bike battery will cost you £200.
Gravitastrophe

Can anyone in the know share their opinion on the lidl multi tool vs the Aldi one?
thedrisback
17 Jun 17 #45
No I know that but can you buy the batteries on there own as number 7 says batteries with charger
bonzobanana
17 Jun 17 #46
That would only give you 8Ah at 18V (the 20V is just marketing and the peak voltage). You'd need to double up again to get 8Ah at 36V. So £136 and to be honest you get dedicated e-bikes around £400 and you would need a bike and other parts so no savings. Also likely the li-ion cells may not match the quality used by e-bikes. With li-ion batteries explosive nature and often the fitment on e-bikes close to your genitalia you'd want to make sure the batteries are properly housed in a strong case and not going to be over-charged or cooked in the sun which a dedicated e-bike would have to be fully safety tested and certified for.

I picked up the cordless angle grinder - big design flaw unfortunately! You lose a LOT of cutting depth, as the latch that closes the red guard encroaches quite a lot into the cutting area, I thinking losing about 1cm of potential cutting depth. The latch really should be 180 degree opposite where it is - absolutely brain dead design...!

Been looking at this youtube bit test video for impact drivers
Basically the video says the Makita Impact Gold is the best amazon.co.uk/d/S…9W/ but it's £12 and only contains the 10 most common bits.
I doubt you can get better than the Screwfix deal on the 32-bit impact set in the link above for under £10-.50. Its got great reviews. You can also multi-buy 3 extra (most common) impact bits like the ph2 for under £2.59 extra just in case.... screwfix.com/p/e…533 .

The beast of the impact driver has rounded all 3 of my 'generic' screwdriver ph2 bits (not the screwheads btw which were totally intact) bar 1 'proper' CR-V one (but even that is part worn). Only drove 4 x 2" screws into chipboard! It is seriously powerful.
Apparently most generic 'impact' bits are the same garbage as well.

however it smashes a 3" inch( thick screw) through a 4 inch piece of timber with no effort at all.
as for decent and cheap bits, dewalt sell the trade tubs of pz2 and ph2 bits , think theres 25 in each, for ref the impact bits by dewalt are black and the normal ones silver, ive had a box for years and still using the same bit, only cost a fiver a tub

Hi - Just got hold of the Erbauer impact 32 bit set from screwfix [£10.49] along with a discounted 25 pk of Dewalt PZ2 bits (about £3.50) and tested it out on chipboard with some 2" PZ2 screws, and on Soft pinewood about 10 times each (20 times in total) - the full 2 inches - i.e. thick wood - both screwing and unscrewing. I know - a bit of a crappy test - but it's given me confidence in the product.

The screw got very hot, but the PZ2 bit was totally intact throughout - and I drove the screw well into the wood. Hardly a fantastic test but I am confident that this bit will last a long time with the Parker impact driver. The Dewalt PZ2 bit showed a tiny bit of wear but it would last for hundreds of screws IMO (and you get 25 of them).

All in all well impressed! (BTW you get 6 PZ2's and 6PH2's in the kit)

Wouldn't bother on eBay the prices are extortionate, you can buy a 2ah battery direct from the distributor (Kompernass) for £17.99 delivered., they also sell a 3ah battery for a couple of pound more.
cdf123
7 Jul 17 #97
Actually you are wrong. 3.6v is when the cell is flat. They are 4.2v fully charged. So 20v is far more accurate than 18v as they used to be called.
polarbaba to cdf123
7 Jul 17 #98
Actually 3.7 is it's working voltage.

It will settle to around this voltage for most of its usable range ( which is why estimating battery life is notoriously hard) and then the battery management circuit will then allow it to discharge to around 2.8. - 3.2 v before preventing you using it anymore. If they are discharged below this it will start causing damage. Therefore the usable range for the battery is roughly

When charged 4.1-4.3 v

When at "0%" 2.8-3.3v

It's not exact nor fixed as it depends on use cases and also battery chemistry.

Cheers
