These type of bikes are regularly this price, £300 is over inflated.
I got one with discs for this price from Halfords last year.
Only rode it for 6 miles - LOL

V brakes on anything but a flat trail isn't something I'd recommend.

I disagree, if the V brakes are good they are more than adequate for doing a lot more than flat trails. Having tried disc brakes, I found to my surprise that I preferred my Shimano Deore V brakes.

V brakes are fine if properly adjusted and have plenty of stopping power. Please do not let this put you off!

The main advantage of discs is that they still work when the rims are covered in mud. Disadvantages are extra weight and need for stronger forks (because the braking force is at the end, not the top). Probably all academic when discs are 'in' so suddenly no one wants old fashioned Vee Brakes!
Ignore Halfords' laughable RRPs but at these prices these OK bikes are good value. Don't even think about Halfords' lower ranges though, eg Apollo!
13kg isn't too bad for a cheap bike but those 1.95 wide tyres will add some drag on-road: budget for some narrower ones if you're really going to use the bike largely on-road.

I recently got this bike for 207 when it was reduced and I'm happy with it. Nice simple bike for my commute. The seat it comes with isn't the most comfortable for sure so maybe consider a gel seat or something. All in all I was happy with it and would recommend at this price.

The big compromise on this bike is the basic tourney gearing with freewheel based rear wheel. This is entry level quality and likely to need more maintenance and not be particularly solid in operation. Personally I think the bike would have been better if they dropped the front derailleur, triple chainset and front gear selector and used those cost savings to change the rear wheel to a cassette based wheel with a 8 speed cassette and altus derailleur. Yes the gear ratio's wouldn't be as wide but the bike would then be capable of more abuse with a more robust and dependable gear system and improve its ability to cope with all weathers. However in all other areas the bike looks strong with well chosen components.

i brought this bike over a month ago for £220 from halfords. I brought it to commute to work and back. Im quite impressed with the bike. Its not quite the full suspension giant i have but for the price, its brilliant. the ride is smooth. The breaks are great, even if they are v breaks. Seat is comfortable and gears are brilliant. the only thing i have changed on the bike since i brought it are the handlebars and grips

Good point, Halfords bike height and inside leg chart is really useful; I need 16'' to 17'' bike:
The code works for the ladies version (as shown in the screengrab in ilc14's post) but doesnt work on the mens frame for some reason

Doing the tweed valley enduro this weekend will keep an eye out for v brakes.
The code works for this bike so it's £195 or £10 more
To me, it looks the better deal but I don't know much about bikes.... the main diff I can see is a front suspension, Aluminium vs Alloy and 1kg heavier, have I missed anything?
what do people think?
I'll be using it for recreation cycling around tow paths, parks and docks and may be the occasional commute of about 15mins

Suspension forks will be hindrance for that type of cycling. Aluminium/alloy tend to be interchangeable terms in the bike world. If you find you are mostly on hard surfaces you may want to consider some narrower tyres for easier pedaling. From what you've said I'd say go for the Parva, especially if you can get it for £165.
BuckRodgers666

Keep an eye out for carrera's at enduro meets too! it's not aimed at that kind of rider, it's aimed at someone who'll ride canal tow paths and some bridal paths. And for that it's perfectly fine!

Thanks for the info, just went to the shop and placed the order... Some more info for others thinking about buying:
*The offer ends today
*Even though specs look the same the guy in the shop told me that don't use as good components for the Crossfire1 hence why the price is similar to the Parva, The suspension for it cheaper than other models(crossfile3 costing 400!) and that it can break more easily. Were as the para is built stronger so less likely to go wrong
*I got the Parva for 165.6 as they were able apply the code instore.

6 bikes lol, Did I tell you I got a shimano bottom bracket for £2 from halfords. Not sorted out the clicking freewheel just yet, may way till it needs changing anyway, kind of got used to the noise now. I had reserved A parva at £165 in green, thought it was cheaper than buying parts later on, a back 27.5 wheel alone is over £50. But thought better of it and will now just work with what I have. Plan now is not to buy any more bikes or parts and to run each bike and as they start to fail eventually strip them to keep the next one going and so on, I'm sure between 6 bikes I have enough to last me the next 30 years all being well.
