Xpenology sets it up using synology hybrid raid. Add and remove drives as you wish and it will automatically adjust. E.g. 4x1tb will give 3tb storage. Accessing from outside is easy with port forwarding in your router plus you can use all the synology apps

What's the difference between this and 520d do you know ?
size may be a factor compared to qnap these have smaller dimensions

Altho, if you are non technical it may be beyond your knowledgesphere to install xpeneology. Its not very difficult, and worthwhile .. I'm not sure about accessing it from outside , perhaps others can clue you up on that.
On this deal, 2x1tb does seem a bit limiting and what happens when you want to upgrade disks?
Also this probably sets up the disks as raid1 (mirrored) so only giving you 1tb "safe" storage, jbod or Raid0 would give the full 2tb.

Can I ask a technical question - don't mean to go off topic for the deal. I currently have a WD MyCloud drive connected to my PC. I can access it from a WD player as well as my phone via an app. It is starting to misbehave and I keep getting errors with it. Would this linkstation function in the same way? I am more interested in being able to access it from my phone so I can watch films on the go. Thanks in advance.

Have a look at a hp microserver. Install xpenology and install plex. Fantastic home media setup with phone apps for on the go.

Depends what you need but I don't think their software and apps are meant to great compared to qnap or synology at a similar price.

Any links to the qnap or synology equivalent as I'm looking for a 4tb? Thanks

It's a good price if 2TB is all you want, but the 4TB model is also well priced at £189.99 and twice the capacity for an extra £50 looks like a better deal to me.
