Good news at the pumps!

ASDA are reducing their fuel prices by 2p tomorrow - making sure you don't pay more than 111.7p per litre on Diesel and Unleaded.

Asda’s head of petrol trading Dave Tyrer said: “Today’s latest move shows that Asda is once again leading the way in reducing the price at the pumps to help the millions of motorists across the UK.

“Our new national price cap of 111.7p per litre on both unleaded and diesel will be welcomed by the millions of drivers who will be starting to plan their summer holidays.”

Oil now $45 a barrel, expect another price drop soon! Should be sub 110, my local Sainsbury's is already doing petrol and diesel at 110.9

I am not a politician and, for once, they are not trying to peg inflation on matters out of their control because this is in their control. They could junk this barking mad idea or at the very least give the British people a second referendum with the option of remaining in the EU as one of the options. If the exiters position is so strong what have they got to fear? If it isn't then the will of the British people is being ignored.

Well, brexit comes as another current, very convenient excuse politicians are using to explain why the country is in trouble - its always someone else's fault and never theirs (or ours as it comes).

by the way, just filled up at another supermarket and the emissions warning message has gone by the time I drove back home, so ASDA fuel is definitely not the same "quality"
Utilitarian
20 Jun 17 #105
All the above may be true but whatever the reasons were for high fuel prices in the past we know that a big factor now is the collapse in the value of the pound and the reason for that, the madness that is brexit.
wised_up
20 Jun 17 #104
All those who blame brexit on any prices going up must be quite new to this country or were asleep (a coma perhaps?) for the past couple of decades not to notice a constant price increase (on everything) - when there was neither idea nor a vote for brexit - quite the opposite, we have been the part of EU and everything was getting pricier every year.

As for Asda petrol "quality" :disappointed: every time I fill up there the "check emissions" starts flashing on the dashboard - until I use it up and fill elsewhere and the warning goes away.

Yeah I remember the £5 that was a long time ago. I'm normally at Shell a couple of times a week to fill up, my car goes through fuel like no tomorrow, but the plus side is points when filling up which is always a bonus when they come through.
The app used to be a pain but they've changed loads. Once you've used it a few times its easy and they e-mail you a VAT receipt if you need one to claim back.
Just remember to have your GPS turned on so it knows where you are lol

You not longer have to use the QR code, if your GPS location is enabled on your phone you just pull up to Shell, open the app, enter your pin, what pump number, then simply fill up. Really easy process
Firefly1
16 Jun 17 #83
It's Shell only and you need to install their app - as well as PayPals I believe. Most but not all Shell garages now accept PayPal (look for QR code by each pump).
I did try it a couple of times but it actually seemed to take longer than going in to pay! Many screens to get through on the app unless they've changed it recently.

Good in emergencies when you have your phone & forgot your wallet though.

Still cheap for a motorway
Had a few over 140 for Diesel. Try to avoid like the plague but sometimes the 20-30minutes I'd save using them makes me more than what i loose.

Generally speaking it's due to stupidity though, the van can get 750mile on its 50l tank so no excuse really.

-edit one neat thing though. Forgot my wallet last week, 250milea from home. However Shell accept PayPal

Paid 114.9p at Tesco in Hemel on Wed night, typical. I suspected prices would drop again soon. Asda drop price, Tesco in Hemel matches then a week or so later Tesco ups it's prices again. Asda announces a reduction Tesco matches.... then slowly raises prices again. Shame there's no Asda fuel available on my route.

My 13 year old car is on 223,000 miles and I've almost always used supermarket fuel. I've filled up a few times using shell / bp / Esso to see if there was any difference in terms of range, and there was none. I didn't notice any difference in performance either.
rs990
15 Jun 17 1 #63
I drive a performance car and usually try to fill up with Super, however my last two tankloads have been regular unleaded from Shell then Asda. I saw no difference to fuel economy or performance between the two tanks.

There is a noticable difference between different brands of super unleaded, but with regular unleaded it seems to be much of a muchness.

I'm not sure if its diesel or petrol we've had the most complaint's about, but I do know peoples cars either not starting at all or really struggling after they've filled up.
Theres been a few incidents online where Asda have tried to throw the blame else where, then ended up losing the case and having to folk out a bill on the customers car.
You could maybe try a diesel additive product like Redex next time you fill up, see if that helps you at all.
dck
15 Jun 17 #56
Water content / contamination makes a lot of sense.....

I fill the car with diesel once a month and average 25 miles a day. If I use Asda diesel, the car's fine for the first two weeks, but then it gets sluggish and can take two attempts to start. It's almost like the fuel goes bad after two weeks.

Have absolutely no problem with Tesco's diesel and it's only 0.2p more expensive at most.

LMFAO! Supermarket fuel, as with all fuel has to meet a minimum B.S standard. Look on the pump next time you fill up! Anyway been £1.11.9 at my local Tesco (Hayes) for 2.5 weeks!!
gary333
15 Jun 17 1 #37
You do realise that most petrol stations (Shell etc) are franchised. The chances are that supermarkets make a higher profit per litre than all but the largest well placed franchised main oil company outlets. This is simply due to already sunken costs on their retail outlets land allowing lower operating costs and the ability to buy at the best market price in huge amounts. A franchise has to buy fuel and pay maintenance contracts from the oil company. Supermarkets can buy fuel from wherever they want and will buy from multiple suppliers for the lowest rate.

Personally I go off the range that a full to the brim tank gives me. Tesco and shell always give me a good 50-60 miles extra on my range compared to Asda and Morrisons. I appreciate that the digital range goes off your driving style and habits but that's my personal opinion on it, I agree with the guys getting slated above I wouldn't touch Asda fuel I'd rather pay a few pence more but each to their own the joy of freedom!

Im sure the amount of money texaco / esso / shell make is 100 times more than asda or tesco so yes they can afford to cut to supermarket prices , these small garages selling for £1.19.9 if they sell 10,000 litres a day at that price and make 10p a litre profit then reduce the price make half the profit get more people in the door to buy other stuff in th shop surely thats business ?

Well you've won the award for 'idiot of the day' congratulations.
And whats wrong with people stacking shelves or cleaning the floor? Does this mean they have less knowledge about fuel? Who are you John Browne!
All fuel is stored differently which effects the over all condition of it.
I've no more to say about this matter. Google will clear up any issues with Asda fuel after a quick search.

Because a 7% markup on the cheapest price isn't exactly a big deal, the I'm sure almost every high street retailer have products their competitors sell for 7% cheaper.

Never understood why people got so worked up about fuel in particular, it's not even as if the price difference going to make much of a impact to the average person.

Some people like to waste money and pay more than necessary. This rubbish crops up all the time about supermarket fuel being poor. The biggest factor if you are buying standard 95 fuel is how good a condition the owner has kept up with maintaince on the tanks and pumps. Most damage has been due to contamination of tanks due to owners not following best practises
