Well I've had my series 2 for months and wouldn't like to be without. Convenient notifications, run tracking, calorie tracking, offline podcast playing, calendar and used for the first time played my golf yesterday and it was excellent, giving distances to the green from wherever you are standing. Couldn't be happier with mine!

except for a garmin
I have had an Apple Watch and a Garmin, whilst AW is ok for basic fitness, if you are even a little bit serious the Garmin will blow it out the water.

I doubt it. Gen 1 released march 15 and gen 2 released September 16. If apple follows the same pattern we should expect a new one in mar 18.

Series 2 is Water Proof up to 50m and suitable for Swimming. Also has a little vibrating mesh feature which pushes any excess water out after the swim. Series 1 is only Water Resistant unfortunately.

Is it just the appearance that is different to the other series 2 watches or is there any functional difference?

Just as easy to get your phone out of your pocket and read it on a bigger screen. Saving yourself ££££££
iEimis to zombietime
25 Jun 171#37
Well there's a lot more added to it than just notifications. I'd say 50-60% of the reasons people get this are for activity tracking, HR monitoring and fitness related. Then there's Apple Pay, being able to answer or make calls whilst your phone is upstairs charging for example or not missing important notifications etc, the list goes on and on.
garryallen to zombietime
25 Jun 17#38
It's easier to raise your wrist than to dig your phone out of your pocket. Had mine for a few months now and it is far more useful a device than I anticipated, if anything. My most used feature thus far, is being able to control music etc from your wrist, which is very handy when cycling etc it's almost worth owning for notifications alone, but there is so much more to it.
Rossmor40 to zombietime
25 Jun 17#49
Well that really depends on where you work for one thing. In my workplace due to sensitive company or customer information on the computer screens mobile phones are banned in the office and they have to be kept in desks or lockers. If you are caught looking at your phone you are out the door. So in this situation I find it invaluable as I can keep up with notifications, personal emails etc and know when my phone is ringing.
hismum
25 Jun 17#40
Sorry, thanks for the reply. This is all information I know and am aware of. My question was perhaps poorly worded. I was looking for some first hand feedback from people have used it for swimming regularly and I was wondering if it is recommended by swimmers or if people have had any problems with it.
Rossmor40
25 Jun 172#41
So what is it the Garmin does so much better than the Apple Watch? The fitness info the AW gives for swimming is just exactly what I want as I am not interested in any other info and it's hard to think what other info can be given in any case. I am also not talking just about fitness here but the overall package with all the other features the AW gives you when integrated with the IPhone. Can the Garmin beat the overall package? I sincerely doubt it.
Rossmor40
25 Jun 17#42
I have had one for a couple of months and used it about 10 times for swimming doing about 2500m each time. It's very accurate but you have to remember to set the pool size before you start your swim or you can get inaccurate results. You can see a running progress while you are swimming as well which helps you know how many lengths you've done. I have had no problems with it at all but it's recommended that you don't take it into the shower after your swim and get soap or shampoo on it as that can damage the waterproof seals over time.
It's also very secure in your wrist while swimming and the only real worry I have is that I smack the watch on one of the hard plastic discs on the lane ropes and damage it. I'd definitely recommend it for swimming.
MrMoonX
25 Jun 172#43
you can get notifications on the Garmin, but its bad in comparison to AW. The fitness metrics are a lot better and it is more accurate. Running with both an AW and Garmin, the Garmin has been closer to a IAAF measured course than the AW, the AW was 1/10 a mile out! Then there is battery life, I doubt the AW would last a Marathon with constant GPS and Heart Rate, it will also last a week with 5 training sessions, the AW needs charging every night.
The AW is good for what it does, its just not a serious fitness watch.
zombietime
25 Jun 172#44
Yeah it's easier to look at your watch and finding out you have a notification/message but your next action is to look at your phone to read it in full or to reply. And all the other things you said your phone does apart from heart rate. I carry my phone with me most of the time, so pointless for me.

Rossmor40
25 Jun 172#48
First of all it's a myth that the AW 2 needs charging every night. I think you are getting mixed up with the original AW as the battery has much improved since the original watch. My AW 2's last charge was 2days and 21hrs ago with 5hrs usage and it still has 25% of the battery left. That's with 3 swimming sessions, notifications and the HR monitor taking a reading every 15m. It also only takes an hour or so to charge which you do overnight as who wears their watch to bed anyway.
I have seen a Garmin in action as my Mrs has a Fenix 5 because she does a lot of running and cross country etc. It is really good and has got a lot of data on it for runners so I can see why a serious runner would like it but it's also a watch that's £100 more retail than the AW and £180 more than this deal. Garmins seem to be a watch more suited for runners than anything else and you'd really have to be ultra serious to get one as 90% of the population don't need half the information it produces.
It's all down to overall value in the end and for most the overall package of the AW will win.

I got a Series 2 last year and have used it for around 1-2 swims each week since then. It is brilliant, works flawlessly. Just, erm, don't hang it up on a hook in the shower so that you then knock it off and smash it on the tiled floor, cos that sucks. Cue expensive repair! I'd recommend the watch though.
