The Dot is the Echo without the speaker. It still has a speaker, but it's tiny, and more akin to the one in your smartphone. Loud enough for alarms and speech, but not really suitable for playing music etc.

If you just want something to control your IoT devices, then get the Dot.
If you just want to ask questions then get the Dot.
If you want to listen to music then either get the Dot and connect it to speakers, or get the Echo.

Personally, I have swapped my Dot for an Echo, as I wanted the minimalism of an all in one design for the kitchen, rather than 2 devices (Dot+Speaker).

The search on the new site is pants. I searched for echo, and this never came up. Only found it as it got flagged up when I was going to post the deal myself.

If you can wait for Amazon Prime day next month I'm guessing new Echo's will be at this price.

why don't u put inside your house few cameras as well ??

bought 1 and it arrived today - the actual box hadn't even been open - all the seals still intact .I have to admit this is our 2nd 1 having paid full price on the 1st .
wouldn't be without it. The first 1 is my autistic sons. best thing I've ever bought for him .
I now have the new 1 and great speaker as well as brilliant for reminders .I have 5 kids ,work full time and is brilliant for organisational purposes

All the reviews do say that the Echo is much better as a speaker but I have a Sonos so music playback would be secondary. More interested in the Assistant features personally.

It does but only inbound comnands at the moment i.e. it can search, play and recommend stuff to watch on the tv via voice commands, but you can stream music from plex to the play on the echo speaker.

You can pair your phone with echo and play music that way, but it's not as slick because leaving it paired isn't really an option as it will broadcast all your alerts (calls texts etc)

How does sound compare to the Sonos Play:1?

Had the echo , but got rid and got the Google Home, mainly because I have 5 chromecasts around the house, ....

Pros: Much better question response from the home
Much better voice recognition from the home (much much better)
Prefer the Google play music interface on the Home even tho I have to pay more


Cons : No Bluetooth on the Home as yet...
cheaper to go multiroom with the echo ( had the echo dot in the living room and voice remote in the bedroom cost £65 on offer)
I now have 2 Google Homes 1 in the living room and 1 in the bedroom, cost £250 but did get the deal with a chromecast on one..

Yes - you can set Spotify as the default music player which means you don't even need a specific Spotify command and simply tell Alexa to play a certain track, genre, artist, playlist etc. Like any voice command systems it can be a little hit and miss but you can still go into your phone, choose what you want on spotify and set it to play on the Echo instead after which you can still send voice commands to it.

That's why I bought a Home as well as a Echo today. Best, or worst, of both worlds.

I have the Echo Dot, it's great for skills, home automation and radio. It is absolutely dire and completely and utterly hopeless for asking questions, it's not just poor but extremely hopelessly rotten to the core for this task. I plan on enabling developer options on mine and adding "Ask Google" skill, otherwise you need to supplement this with Google Home.

I use mine mainly as a bluetooth speaker and voice controlled internet radio. Also for checking traffic and weather before leaving the house.

Unless you need a better quality speaker, go with the DOT at 44.95 for Prime. Much better response to voice I find and tiny by comparison

The Dot will output it's audio to whatever it's connected or paired to.

You could use the command 'Alexa disconnect', make your commands, then 'Alexa connect' to reconnect. Bit of a ball ache tho.

Do you know if the dot plays everything via bluetooth? or only when you ask for music?

For example I wouldn't want it connecting to my AV receiver each time I ask it to turn my lights on or ask it a question.

Heat from me, seems a very good price - refurbs from Amazon generally mean like new but maybe not in original packaging, only once had an issue and Amazon refunded me some money.

I paid £99 at launch, think it was just about worth it. This is about as cheap as it's been since, albeit refurb

I always buy Amazon refurbished if the deal is good as they are usually stock which has been returned unused. I've never experienced receiving anything other than unused items.
