AA - generally ok but had to wait ages. some of my family have had horror stories with them. Expensive for cover RAC - generally ok. Expensive for cover GEM - really good but almost as expensive as AA/RAC, though far better as they use local garages (which i guess can be a lottery) Audi - they use AA now. Was free and on the one occassion i have used it it was pretty decent Nationwide - Brittania Breakdown - not used it yet

I tried this. Your license must be registered to your parents address as they may check your license when you need a call out. I had to pay the difference before even looking at my car.

Yes i emailed them to see if they now covered pickups they didn't before and got this reply. • UK vehicles only. • Private cars and motorcycles. Vans, pick-ups and motorised caravans will only be covered if they do not exceed 3.5tonnes gross vehicle weight. I'm well pleased it means i don't need to renew my pickup breakdown cover this year.

How long did it take to receive the initial email? I bought the breakdown cover but haven't received an email, just hoping I didn't use a wrong email address!

Well trained not sure about that,Only time i used AA was when my car wouldn't start something to do with alarm this was away from home. The guy who came spent an hour messing with electrics then tried to recharge the battery in my keyfob by putting jump leads across the battery in it yes you heard that right,It never worked since,Then he tried to talk me into taking the car to the main agents instead of home i refused.and he took it home.So the above basic cover would have been no good for me at that time.Never used AA since.

I understand that and rightly so,but if some old biddy rings up say after 2 weeks and says it wont start again will they point blank refuse to come out again as its difficult to diagnose its the same fault as previous !
paulandpam1
28 Jun 17#37
I'm sure this applies to all breakdown services, It's so they don't get stung with the same fault again because the customer can't be arsed getting it properly repaired.
victormeldrew3
28 Jun 17#36
Unlimited callouts hmm...
Service will not be provided where the fault has been identified by the AA for a breakdown of the same vehicle within the preceding 28 days;

The AA does have trained mechanics, they do try and fix your car at the roadside if they can. In 30 years I've used them a dozen times and have never needed to use anything than the basic Roadside Assistance option and have never had to be towed to a garage.

Hi Andrew Hu,
We're extremely sorry to read this happened following your call for assistance, at peak times when demands for service are exceptionally heavy, we also use appointed agents to assist our members. We will also send a recovery vehicle to get you off the motorway first before assessing the problem with the vehicle.
We hope you got in touch with our team to raise this at the time.

I have had the same experience but with the RAC...once the guy put a new inner cable in my clutch cable when it snapped ...this involves alot of head first legs in the air 'dash diving' and is not easy in a small kit car...took him about 40 mins and did me great till I could get a new full cable and fit it a couple of weeks later...also they have sorted faulty fuel pump switch as well taking about 30min...same guy who is brill.
AA may have more patrols but I beleive RAC have more PER MEMBER...the 2 times I called AA they took 4 hours to come on the 1st and the other sent a local garage (the guy was a moron and hadn't a clue) to tow me out of the snow without telling me it was chargeable!....thats when I changed to the RAC...like I say though some have had the oppsosite experience so 6 of one half doz of other i suppose

And your point is?
Claiming is the point when you get the value from the insurance. What you're saying is only relevant if you're never going to claim, in which case why buy it in the first place?

Insurance companies actually do very few checks (if any at all) UNTIL you need to claim!

Right, but when your car isn't fixable at the roadside this coverage gives you 10 miles of towing distance, or they'll have another £120 or so off you on the spot, to tow it up to 50 miles. I've paid for AA for three years, had to use them for the first time two weeks ago, I'm cancelling my membership.

I think it's always a local company, I've used them twice and they were great both times.

Well it's still £10 but you get 5% interest on £2500 which works out about £5 after tax

Big Negative. This is just basic cover . Work s out much cheaper with my insurance . Same cover £129 direct with AA . They are ripoff if you approach them directly

£39 is only to trick people in. When you add home and national recovery the cost balloons up to £89. Considering most cars breakdown at home and no one wants to be stranded following breakdown the true cost of this deal is £89 not £39 if you think!!!

Their european service is rubbish, not a single vehicle recovered from Stalingrad.

Went with AA once, never again. They don't pick up on the M1 where I broke down so they got a 3rd party company to come and pick me up. That guy picked me up and left me in a service station saying that the AA would come back with one of their vehicles and take me the rest of the way. When I called to see where they were they told me that I'd already been recovered and they wouldn't be taking me any further.
They left me stuck in a service station at 10pm when it was a bank holiday the following day. I couldn't even get a taxi and buy the bits I needed to get the car going again as everywhere was closed. They refused to help unless I paid £670 to be towed back to London. I ended up staying the night in a hotel there and a friend drove to me the next day and we went and picked up the parts off somebody we found on Gumtree. The whole thing was a huge ordeal and AA did the absolute bare minimum to fulfill their obligation.

To be honest, this may be in reference to the 'free onward travel cover' offer, when you take the additional 'national recovery'. You can see the statement above mentioning all the cashback sites is sectioned off with the terms and conditions for the 'free onward travel cover' offer only.
Therefore, if you go for the £39 breakdown membership alone, you may get cashback. You will only not get cashback, as per quote above, if you take the breakdown membership with 'national recovery' and the 'free onward travel cover' (works out at £89 for this).
Dont' quote me on it, but this is the way it looks.

Select Breakdown membership, then select vehicle cover. Any other cover or add ons will be more expensive.

We subscribe to the Autoaid. service, albeit you have to pay up front in calling them out but they are quick at refunding. Our renewal which comes up in July will be £41 for the year so £2 more than this offer but with Home Start, Recovery, onward travel etc.

Unlimited call outs, great, that is until the renewal, our policy went up to over £50 per month (100% rise) because we had used them 3 times in the previous year. That was their excuse for the astronomical price rise. Obviously we cancelled.

I hate to mention them but (as they are now known) Kwik Fit are pretty decent.
I have used them on a couple of occasions and have been very happy with them. They use a large base of independent garages and in one instance on a sunday night, they had me towed to a garage, arranged a hire car to get me to my destination that night and arranged to deliver my broken car to me at my destination a couple of days later, as i was fixing it myself (wheel bearing had gone). That was all within an hour and a half of breaking down.
I think the limit was 6 call outs a year and they also covered me for breakdowns in Europe. THAT SAID!!! I won't be renewing due to a couple of changes in the policy that means my car wouldn't be covered in europe as its too old apparently.
For UK cover excellent.

RAC are matching this deal. Just seen it advertised. Same price, same unlimited call out etc.
Had very bad experience with RAC so I will be going for AA this time. I used to change each year but think I will stick with AA because they have awesome deals for members like money off toby carvery woohoo. RAC parent company tried to sell me personal insurance and they offered me a free trial and then when I cancelled somehow they "forgot" i cancelled. Took ages to sort it out and the breakdown cover that I received from RAC was poor. Long wait, poor diagnosis of fault etc etc... of course it's anecdotal but i'm not going with em again.
AA FTW heat from me op.
