And fingers crossed you don't get a technophobic bus driver who, when you show him your phone looks at you like you've just produced a Martian passport and asks you to pay cash as he's no idea what an m-ticket is.

Sounds like they're having enough trouble getting their Android app to work well. Why on earth would they expend effort making a version for less than 2% of the UK market rather than concentrating their efforts on fixing the Android / IOS versions?
CampGareth to aidanscarfe2016
27 Jun 17 #29
You're in the minority here, windows phone has about 2-4% market share vs say 86% for android. To put that in perspective, how often do you see an electric car on the roads? That's about 1% of UK cars.

I've never used the m-ticket app before (it's got truly awful reviews after an update last January - including claims you need a net connection when showing your ticket and it takes an age to actually find the ticket in the app to show the driver), but I decided to buy the 1 quid ticket as an experiment. I don't trust these apps at all - what if your battery runs out or - as it's claimed you might need - you can't get a 3G or wi-fi signal? Apparently, it even displays your name when showing the ticket, which is a dubious breach of privacy that will encourage people to use fake names.

It asks for too much info of course (full name, postcode, mobile number, e-mail address - none of which it actually needs) and although I would normally select Merseyside as my region, I had to select a special region called "Arriva CTBW North West" instead otherwise the CTBW special ticket doesn't appear.

I've no idea why the CTBW ticket needs a promo code - isn't it a special promo ticket on its own and should have been set at the 1 quid price without needing a code? Anyway, it then clumsily jumps out of the app to a Web browser for payment (obviously to avoid Google taking a 30% cut), but at least they do support PayPal. Once I'd paid, the ticket appeared in my list, but *don't* activate it until the day you want to use it - apparently it crazily expires only 18 hours after activation (so much for any chance of picking your day in advance).

I think I might switch on my mobile data before displaying it to the driver next Monday as a precaution (in theory, I could try and use the bus wi-fi, but I'd like to be ready in advance and judging by the app complaints, users struggle to get the ticket shown in time to the driver!). I'm quite surprised Arriva haven't updated this app for 5 months now in order to fix the complaints aired in the app store (a 1.7 rating for it as I speak!).

Skim read what you said, too long for the net... but from what I did read, I agree.

Why is there a separate section for CBTW and then the need for a code?!

Clumsy programming from dated system or an IT team that simply doesn't have a clue.
browntoa
27 Jun 17 #22
Don't know what arriva buses are like elsewhere but you will struggle to find one running before 7am and after 7pm , not good as we are a long distance commuter area where most people need to get to/from stations outside those times . That is if they actually run , they claim every 10 minutes on some route but you can stand there for an hour sometimes .

And agree the app is dire

Hello
Regarding the m-ticket app - I've been using it for a couple of years now and it has changed a lot in that time.
Currently it is working very well IMO.
One major issue for me was that you could only pay by entering credit/debit card details - on a phone, where zoom was not allowed by the app, was extremely difficult to even see what was being entered.
But now, you can pay with Paypal or Android Pay - I bought a ticket yesterday.
You can easily pay on the go - I have managed to log on and buy a ticket within 2 minutes with data, when I got to a bus stop and forgot that my m-ticket had expired.
Only remaining issues - sometimes the app tries to download data and that will stop the ticket being displayed for some time, so either make sure that you are in flight mode at a bus stop, or activate the app in a wifi area before you intend to travel, to make sure all is up to date, or try and bring up the ticket en route to the bus stop.
And being in flight mode when about to board a bus is very sensible - some people will always answer a mobile phone call, no matter what social situation they are in - if you answer your phone whilst boarding a bus, the ticket app will ping off and I doubt that the driver will be pleased to welcome your aboard, when you can't show your ticket.
m-tickets are the cheapest way to pay for bus commuting - shame that Arriva East Midlands did away with a quarterly ticket - with a monthly ticket I'm barely saving money, but 'tis more convenient than having to have the correct BFH ready.

never used the app . but daft question..... can't you just screenshot the ticket so you don't need data to show it ?
amour3k to robbie1412
28 Jun 17 #35
Good question, lol.
rkl to robbie1412
3 Jul 17 #38
I just activated my ticket this morning and the ticket screen has a complex background animation in a panel with swirling red blocks with alternating large text in the foreground between the time in HH:MM and the word "IBEX" (dunno if the latter changes on other days) and also an animated expiry countdown (along with the date for the day ticket). I'm guessing this is to stop you screenshotting or even video recording the ticket screen.

Slightly annoyingly, if you go from the ticket screen back to the home screen of your phone and then press the app icon to re-enter the app, it doesn't go straight to the ticket screen again. You still have to go 2 levels down the app after that to view it again.

As for using it on multiple days if it's limited to one ticket per account, all I'll say is that it doesn't seem to validate any of the account info and I'll leave it up the reader to work out what to try next...

I wish this was the price of bus tickets regardless... encourage more people to get on them! £6 for a bus ticket for me and my OH to travel 3 miles the other day. took the car instead. Go abroad and its 1 euro or so to get on and get off wherever you want (within the bus route) Amazing! really wish it was like that here, would always use the buses then! And buses wouldn't be so empty 90% of the time. Governement subsidises the bus companies yet they make a hug profit and overcharge for their tickets. Doesnt make sense. Tickets should be cheaper and buses fuller. Heat added for this, just wish it was long term :-)
bayhabourbutcher
4 Jul 17 #49
I suspect anybody who knows how to create/program apps could quite easily create fake animated tickets that are indistinguishable from the real thing

the ticket really needs a QR code that is scanned when you get on the bus to confirm its valid

edit : looks like this has already been thought of i.e. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFAN0l4kdek
- the comments seem to suggest the hacks have been fixed now though

ok this is getting silly now. Day one was fine with my little 3" Alcatel . day 2 no problem my Samsung 4" core prime... day 3 the daughters iPhone. I'm stuck now on day 4 using a 10 inch tablet. I feel a bit daft showing screen to driver but thats gonna be nothing compared to tomorrow when I get on with my 32" smart tv and plug it into the buses 3 pin mains socket so I can power up the app to show my ticket. bejezzus. the things we do for a bargain these days......
