Salesman ??? hahaha - just someone with a little common sense - the materials used and build quality are often awful on cheap stuff - Ive had a couple of fellow welders buy twice because of shoddy plastic parts falling off - the clip around the faceplate is typical .. as are little gaps from ill fitting parts, YOU risk your eyes if you like.

Bargain... yes you can risk your sight on ebay for a few quid, but this will be built to some sort of regulations.... and be of sturdier stuff.

Just bought this, however I was disappointed to find that the prefilter was plastic.This always gets hit by sparks so I don't think it's going to last long. It looks as though it is replaceable. Though personally I think I'll tape a piece of glass over it :smiley:

MIG is probably easier for a newby. MMA is easy enough with the right welder and the right rods and lots of practice. But most folk find mig easier to start out with as the welding position is constant (unlike mma where the rod gets shorter as you weld).

Lidl was selling a arc welder as well. Was thinking of getting one but I see a few people talking about a mig welder. Are they better?

Elkelriko. No, the Inverter welder at Lidl is for electrodes only or as we call it, Stick welding. It's not a MIG welder. A MIG welder will use a coil of wire, not electrodes. Don't ask me what is a good cheap MIG welder, we don't use MIG at our company.
By the way, MIG means Metal inert gas.
Tight means Tungsten inert gas.

Not tried these particular helmets but I'm fairly sure they will be made in China. With a pure solar power helmet you will still find it has a small battery hidden inside the lens; this needs to be kept charged in order to work....so leave it hanging up in good light when not in use (leaving it face down or in a cupboard will kill it off pretty quick). Also check that the whole lens darkens evenly (try turning your head slightly as you are weling and look through a different section of the lens) if you notice it gets lighter/darker then take it back. Also check that the lens fails safe (stays permanently dark if it goes wrong). Some helmets when tig welding are not sensitive enough and when using slope down on power they can brighten too early and hurt your eyes (sometimes on pulse welding also).... check if you are likely to be doing this.
If it passes these tests then it will be a good buy.

Could do with a new helmet to replace my ageing ESAB.

Miller, you've paid for the name. Even Miller hoods are styled better nowadays, lots of different patterns. We use Speedglas at work, they paid well over £150 a few years ago, they're still around £100 now. This one from Lidl is faster reacting than the Speedglas we use. At £29.99 it's a good hood. I served my time as a welder in 1971-1975, I've worked everywhere from fab shops to shipyards to oil rigs. I'm 61 now so I know what I'm talking about. This hood is ok for most ops, it's made in Germany and has a 3 year warranty, probably Miller has a One year warranty. I don't doubt that the Miller is good, it will be excellent but as I said, there are Plain Black ones available too, you don't have to get something a bit loud if you're happy with Plain Black. Each to there own. I'm happy.

Heated great price. My son is after a mig welder, does anyone know if the Parkside Inverter Welder Lidl are selling is the same as a mig welder? Obviously - I have no clue....:wink:

I'm also a welder and wouldn't be seen dead in that :laughing: I have a miller helmet which is perfect, worth every penny :smile:
