Been after a good deal on a couple of high capacity drives to use in an upcoming project. Taking my usual browse through the WD recertified section and come across the new WD My Book which they have in stock at 3TB and 4TB. I bought two using code WDSTORECPN to take off £10 over £100 bringing the total to £133.98 for two drives. Now to see how easy this new model is to gut compared to the old chassis!

i've bought a few recert drives and always get external drives in caddys as they are cheaper and i remove the drives inside. with WD drives they usually have an encryption that means if you write data via usb and remove the caddy you can't read the data, although the last two 8tb drives didn't have that which was handy
what i do is plug in via usb, diskcheck, write a few gb data, diskcheck, delete all partitions and do a quick format with a single partition, i've found at that point one drive failed and i sent it back (nightmare returns process btw), if it works i diskcheck, write a few more gb data, diskcheck and then delete the partition, diskcheck and any major issues would be picked up. i then fill the entire drive with data over usb which can take 24 hours or more for the bigger drives. i then diskcheck, turn the drive on and off and diskcheck and if that's ok i remove the drive and install in a sata caddy. if the data doesn't show at that point i have to repeat that process and then i'm good to go with my data and install internally. fortunately with the 8tb it saved me over a day as i didn't have to copy again when i removed the drive
obviously i have eveything backed up at least twice and on different machines, and i keep the old drives for a period of time too, so have 4 or more copies of data for the initial period of using the new drives. i've been fortunate to not have any problems like this

Mine have been shipped!
To all of those commenting about the reliability of these drives, I do agree that you would be quite naive to not thoroughly test these drives before use, however you could say the same for any drive!
If you have a somewhat technical background I advise you run the following steps using a Linux machine:
Replace X with the connected drives last letter in the above commands, and note down all of the results before moving on to the next step, which is to test the entire drive for bad blocks.
This will take a long time. Most likely days. You might want to play with the -c option to speed this up. What happens here is badblocks tries to write a pattern of data to every block on the disk, which force the drive to reallocate any bad sectors. Once this test is done, run another long smartctl test and see how many sectors have been reallocated. Some might disagree with this, but any more than 0 reallocated sectors can be classed as a faulty drive.
I hope this helps.

I purchased a 2TB one of these several months ago & all I can say is STAY WELL AWAY - mine has been nothing but totally unreliable on every platform - USELESS & I wouldn't go near one with the shirty stick I have nearly beaten mine up with.

Recertified products can be notified as in and out of stock within minutes. They are not stocked in UK, but are sent from a european warehouse, usually in the Netherlands, so processing and delivery, usually by UPS can take time. If you are expecting any delivery from UPS, you can sign up on their site for email or phone notifications of due deliveries.

Thanks for sharing OP, have some heat. Sadly the 4 & 6TB drives are OOS, however the 3TB is still available...
I need a cheap USB3 drive for my Xboxes, guess I'll have to wait a little longer...

Depends on what code you are referring to. If you are a previous WD customer, as I am, you will receive promo codes by email. My latest code, just received, offers 20% off. It DOES function on listed recertified products !

It is only a hard drive, so you could store files on it, which would need to be accessed by Plex Media Server.

Would you really trust putting sensitive data on a hard disk that has already failed at some point?
MisterMadHatter to Fallen1992
15 May 171#29
Yep. If it's 'sensitive data' then you should ideally have three backups on the go at any point in time. Sure there's less chance of a brand new drive failing but they still do. These recertified drives are cheap options for a third backup and many people have had no problems with them. If you rely on a single hard disk to store sensitive data, whether it's new or recertified, then make sure you invest in a box of Kleenex tissues as you'll need them to wipe away the tears at some point.

Anyone using promo codes will see the promo box @ the WD basket. Each order will only accept ONE code, as with most sites various codes cannot be stacked. Obviously use the code with the highest discount.

As I said, I tried my email received code on all the available listed recertified products that I am interested in purchasing. My product basket clearly showed the 20% discount on EVERY product in my basket, plus the standard FREE delivery on any order total over £50. I DO NOT need to prove it. If you register for email promos from WD before buying any products you may get the proof you require !

have you applied it and was it sucessed on the recertified products? i mean the alphanumeric code. please share the snapshot.

The 20% codes for use with a future purchase are random alphanumeric characters. They aren't valid for recertified products.

I had to enquire when I had no further emails a week later to say drive had been shipped. Money had been taken straightaway. I was told drive was in stock when I ordered but not now. No communication to tell me that though, so I cancelled the order as the website states they don't take money until stock is available.
Received refund within 3 days.

Rightly mentioned.... I purchased two HD last time.... While chasing up after a week, they mailed me that they are out of stock and they will let me know as soon as able to deliver.
Funnier is that I have received cancelation mail day before yesterday with a reason that they are not able to stock up. Now just after a day, they have the stock. Hopefully I'll get my money back soon.
