Or would a woman on her wedding day think 'I'm marrying the person I want to spend the rest of my life with. I didn't need to spend fortunes on a dress to conform to the expectations of others'

Nice thread idea, OP. In today's climate, when many people are struggling to make ends meet, it's perfectly acceptable (and arguably preferable!) to buy wisely and have a frugal wedding, rather than start what's meant to be the happiest period of people's lives, in debt. Because some people DO put it all on credit cards, which they are then indebted to (along with the interest) for the coming years. I'm sure I read somewhere that the average cost of a wedding these days is >£20,000! That's a decent sized deposit for a first house right there!

I found a nice dress to wear for my friends wedding next week! Reduced already, plus the 10% off code and free next day evening delivery code, arrived less than 24 hours after ordering! Can't complain! I had to check out in the tablet tho, it wouldn't apply the delivery code on my phone.
I've got a wedding in July and had not much luck with some Chinese options (weird sizing). Received this one today (the sizing on this Ever Pretty dress is accurate, mercifully....got another Amazon Warehouse Ever Pretty dress that was a size up and it was huge - apparently this is a new size guide they're using). http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371940548224 Lovely on and a gorgeous Lavender colour. Ties up at the back, which gives a bit more wriggle room.
Seems to have come from the UK as it only took 8 days and the Royal Mail tracking/return address is UK.
Just mentioning in case anyone wants another option

Managed to get a dress for my brothers wedding for £20 that was supposedly supposed to be £110, what a bargain! Also got a dress for graduation and some wellies for gardening and it only came to 40 quid altogether! Thanks OP you're a star.

Daughter getting married in Aug, her dress cost a lot & weighs a lot, I've bought the halter dress for £36 already despatched so she can change in the evening if she wants.

I can say that we bought one of these £40 Debs dresses 3 years ago and it was very lovely. Great quality and lovely simple lines. She looked stunning. So as someone who has actually bought one of these, its up to you where you want to spend four figures on a designer, fully embelished hand crafted dress or not... at the end of the day she still had plenty of people say how gorgeous she looked, especially from me

ROFL: who said anything about fortunes? Also most people buy clothes for themselves and dont purchase based on what others may think. Just pretty TIGHT. I am sure a bride walking down the aisle would be thinking. " I look so beautiful in my £40 frock, just hope it lasts the night when we go to the reception in the local working mans club".

Not really. Or they'll justify it with some lame excuse.

Can get it cheaper from the same seller, efashiongirl, bidding from £11.99 + £5.99 P&P (they list various sizes for auction) but I just went for the listing ending soonest, as I wasn't sure when it would arrive http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=Ever+Pretty+Bridesmaid+Long+Evening+Party+Formal+Prom+Dresses+08863&_sop=15
