Just logged in to my Amazon account and there is a new banner for something called Prime Reading. Basically, loads of books you can read for free as part of yor Prime membership. This appears to be separate to the one loan book you have always been abe to get from the lending library.

Seems to be a similar concept to the Prime Music vs Music Unlimited?

It's a funny old world ain't it, my gran used to love listening to hymes being sung. Can't think of anything worse. My mates like watching golf, jees it's just hitting a ball, tedious. I like watching poker, mental it's just watching someone play cards. My dad was watching someone swimming that other week, what a waste of time.

Some good stuff there - including Harry Potter, Star Wars comics, the new Bourne book - but quite a lot of dross. The magazines might be the best thing; get to sample something you never normally would.

You've got a restriction of only 10 items 'lent' at a time but you can 'return' anything whenever you want.

Thanks OP looks good to me and heat added accordingly. Do people think that the same magazines will continue month by month or is it a one off trial to get you 'hooked' to say 'Improve your Coarse Fishing' (sorry.... couldn't resist and it is one of the magazines on offer!)?

This selection of magazines is similar to what is on offer via Zinio from local libraries so I'm guessing that they are offered as a job lot and are likely to stay much the same.

Think it depends on the magazine publisher. I picked up PC Pro magazine and sent it to my iPad with no problem.

I've just gone back to the page and there's a section saying "Available immediately on these devices and platforms" - it seems to be available on the Kindle app for the Android and iOS platforms (but not Windows), along with Kindle devices.

There's a line underneath saying "This publication is not available for some devices. The publisher may have opted out of making it available on certain devices, or the Kindle Reading App experience may not yet be optimised for this publication."

So it might vary for different publications.
PaulB42
18 May 17 1 #52
If you go to the Kindle Books store, you can select Prime Reading Eligible in the filtering options down the left-hand side.

I think the word "Unlimited" is a little strong to describe the selection as there's only a choice of a little over 1000 of the 5 million Kindle books available. A significant number of the fiction books appear to be the first book in a series, though be warned that the remainder of the books in the series aren't available, so don't read these unless you're prepared to pay for the rest of the series (or get them under the existing Kindle Lending Library, which I hope doesn't go away now this new option is in place).

So what are the total advantages for going Prime? I know about the Prime "free" "one-day" delivery, Video. Music and now Reading. Is there anything else? Is there a "family" option where a single subscription can be used by several members of the same family or household? I know I can probably find out the answers on their site, but I don't want to have to sit through reams of Amazon's corporate mumbo-jumbo to find them.

Thanks OP. A decent selection of books, but the magazines are incredible - both Time and National Geographic available free!!

However, do feel a subscription rise is in the offing!

I'm a Prime member (as part of Amazon Household) but I don't get a list of free content to click on? I'm just sent to the page stating "Unlimited Reading", "Any Device" etc, "Learn more about Prime".

To be fair I've always had issues accessing Prime Video, I do have access, but if I click the wrong link I'm sent to the signup for Prime page. Maybe Amazon haven't got their Amazon Household in proper working order?

18 May 17 #76
Thanks for the recommendation. I have Prime and would say it's one of the best value subscription services I use. Same day delivery on a fair few items is just amazing, and combine that with the original content video and music it's simply brilliant.
hcc27
18 May 17 3 #77
I don't believe £6.50 a month is excessive for what Prime offers - a tonne of high quality original content video programming, a pretty decent selection of free music, fast delivery including same day delivery on many items, free unlimited photo storage etc etc. Prime is probably one of the best value subscriptions out there; Amazon actually maintain this price point at a significant loss in order to make money on the sale of their products and services.

Hell I have a subscription to Time and National Geographic which together cost more than the annual Prime subscription; looks like I can cancel that now!

The other day I built a cheapo Raspberry Pi Alexa and it works perfectly.

Happy days.

phoenix_af
18 May 17 #79

hobsgrg
18 May 17 1 #80
Amazon offers Prime at a loss because they want to get people using all their services, and Prime customers spend significantly more money through Amazon than their other customers. So they are happy to take the loss on Prime as they feel they will make the money back later on. Not sure how anyone could call something being offered at a loss a rip-off!

The services being offered as part of Prime might not appeal to you, so not offer good value for money for you personally but it is certainly not a rip-off.

Kindle Unlimited is a different service...you have to pay a separate subscription for it on top of the Prime costs...my Mum and I share Prime but she also has Kindle Unlimited and I think she pays £7.99 a month for it....admittedly I found out by accident when I went to download the few 99p books I'd bought and almost had a heart attack when I saw 1000's of books in my list of available downloads...thought someone had hacked my Amazon account and had been buying books then found out that all the books my mum had downloaded using Kindle Unlimited were shared with me as we share Prime...unfortunately we have entirely different reading tastes and still haven't got to the bottom of why she had downloaded a pile of books in Latin

The other service you mentioned is Kindle First...free sign up and every month you can download one of a choice of 6 books free of charge which are available in advance of their official release date.

I'm a firm Prime customer and think it is great value. So this comment comes from someone who will pay it anyway.
"Watch out for renewals at £99 coming our way soon"
When new services get added, Prime goes up. Apple did 79p to 99p for apps. Amazon will do a similar percentage increase.

Root your nook & add the Amazon app to it. You won't be able to download using the amazon app as it's only an old version tags works on the nook, but you can just select deliver to any kindle app & it should sync over.

Although tbh as nooks use epub format you could just get the books you want from other free sources.

Maybe we're just a little more literate than you, feel that £79 spread among 3 families and providing free next day deliveries (avoiding travel costs and wasted time) is pretty good value for that alone, and regard the music, video and Kindle add-ons as a bonus making the whole package remarkably good value.

well, went through the list of books (Page 1 - 18) and nothing there I would want. I didn't see the Harry Potter...

When Prime unlimited started two of the main publishers wouldn't sign on so I suspect the authors I read are with those Publishers; Issac Asimov, Harry Harrison, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Poul Anderson, Robert Heinlein, Alistair MacLean to name a few authors and things like The Destroyer series which you can by as Kindle editions are missing AFAIK.

Long time since I set it up so can't remember exactly, but I have the Kindle app on the iPad and now when I go to a book/magazine on Amazon Reading section it shows cost as £0.00 with button for 'Read for £0.00' and another button for 'Deliver to: iPad'.

Once clicked, the item automatically downloads into the Kindle app on the iPad via wifi.

So may just need to set up Kindle app on the iPad and log in to Amazon using appropriate account credentials.

I just got the PC Pro Magazine on my android phone using the Kindle app.

aaaaagggghh. They only have the first of any trilogy or series free! So annoying. You get hooked into a story and then have to pay to find out how it ends in subsequent titles! Very sneaky amazon.

Amazing...

I have an old Nook reader - is there a way for me to use these kindle books on it? I remember there being some software that could convert then?

Thanks

When I click on get kindle app it says it'll send a link to an email address. Is that really the official way to install the app ? I thought we were told to stay away from clicking on links in emails.

Have you broadband? Do you have "unlimited broadband? Do you have "unlimited" broadband which has its speed "traffic-shaped" (throttled is the correct term) at certain times of the day, or when you have downloaded or uploaded a preset (by your provider) amount of data? If the answer is "yes" then you know what the new definition of the word "unlimited" is in everyday use. If not, allow me to explain. "Unlimited" means "limited by as much as we can possibly get away with". In this case it means, "you can read the magazines we say you can read, as many times as you like. If you want more, pay more".

I don't read much, but my wife does, can this be shared with amazon family? As I'm the main account holder.

Thanks.

looks like a load of old dross and the ones that are decent are like book 1 of 4 etc and the other in the series are not part of Prime Reading.

can't seem to find the list of mags to download on Prime Reading, just books. Any ideas?

And here. My wife read three magazines over the last couple of days - but looked again today and most magazines seem to have disappeared from the list. Hope they come back soon.

Only #1 in each series is free from the ones that I have checked.

Got to agree with eightace... The selection is limited, and the OP title of "Unlimited free books with Amazon Prime Reading" is certainly misleading. If Amazon Prime Reading is unlimited, why also offer Kindle Unlimited?

Download ebooks from the library.

Second volumes of most of these titles are available on Kindle Unlimited. Sneaky old Amazon!
