With all due respect you don't know what you are talking about! The watch comparison doesn't work because this camera actually has quantitively better results than a cheap camera.

It has significantly larger sensor than a cheap compact which means has significantly lower noise at higher ISO. This camera also has a very good quality lens with a fast aperture which lets you shoot at lower ISO than you would need to with a cheap camera. The sensor size and fast lens also lets you achieve shallow depth of field shots.

If you compared this camera and a cheap £50-£99 camera in bright sunlight outdoors taking landscape pics if you don't view at 100% then the results similar. If you "pixel peep" and look at 100% you will see much more detail though. At the other end though in low light this camera lets you take good pics when the cheap camera would only give you an unusable mess.

I have this camera and the results are stunning, it's not an overpriced status symbol it is a marvel of engineering cramming high end equipment into such a small device.

I am not sure the Sony will give much higher image quality over the TZ100 as they both have the same 1" sensor. However, some will prefer the longer zoom of the TZ100, the 4K video and LCD touchscreen. It is not always practical to simply "walk closer" to a subject if it might mean frightening off wildlife or could involve walking on water!

Is the TZ100 at £469 worth the extra for its 10x zoom or can you crop the photo from RX100 to get the same reach?

you can crop it to get the same reach but it will be lower quality
its a tradeoff like everything else
within its range rx100 > tz100
the further out of the range you go the better tz100 is vs rx100

If you are not so concerned about a viewfinder then the original RX100 is still a good buy. It has a longer reach than the M3 and with clear zoom on will give you a 28 to 142mm zoom (at 10MP). It's smaller and lighter than both the M3 and TZ100 but similar image quality.
There's some info here..

This is available for £244 at the moment (with free case).

Have to agree but the Sony has the better lens F1.8-2.8 vs F2.8-5.9, it's also quite a bit smaller.

Pretty sure the IQ of the sony is way better than the panny. If you need zoom such as wildlife pics then the panny. I would pick a brighter lens over reach.

This. If you really want zoom, I'd go for an SLR and a tele lens. A big zoom in a compact camera always disappoints.

I have one of these, the camera is excellent with amazing shots especially from a small form factor. I bought this mainly because of the low light capabilities although I do wish it came with a slightly longer focal length.

My ideal compact camera would have no zoom at all, but a big bright 35mm equiv 1.8 lens, and a big image sensor.

The Fuji X100T is the camera for you. A fantastic camera if you can live with the slightly larger size. A different class of image to the RX100 and a viewfinder thats streets ahead of the Sony. The perfect street photography/travel digital camera. If video is important to you, rethink.
Plumbboy55
29 May 17 #15
A zoom always lowers image quality, and really most people don't need it often if they give little thought to composition.
pingsteruk to Plumbboy55
30 May 17 #36
At best, this is a huge simplification. Assuming you are ignoring digital zoom (i.e. just cropping the picture) which obviously is going to loose information, you might be confusing the impact of the way zoom is often implemented the the resulting picture quality. In short, zooming usually reduces the maximum aperture available which might be compensated by increasing the sensitivity resulting in accompanied increase in noise. Not all lens are created equal though, take a look a the graph on dpreview to see that the reduced reach of the M3 comes with generally better performance. I bought the M2 and compromised on the better reach for reduced sensitivity (and not paying for the viewfinder)... however the M3 was £750 at the time, so this is a good deal.

There is no guarantee that a prime lens will be any better (although you would hope that £100 of prime would be better than £100 of zoom).

I started out with a 50mm and a 200mm fixed lens on an SLR and, while I would recommend trying one for creative purposes, I appreciate not carrying around a bag of lens to cope with the various situations I find myself in on holiday. Photos of sports, wildlife, the moon, concerts, etc would be very different with fixed lenses.

Sensor is not as important as lens.. ever! And if zoom is important why in hell would anyone be looking at a compact? :0

I needed a camera for good quality product photography.

Which would be best, this or the Nikon D3300?

I would go for the DSLR - you will be able to buy a macro lens & partner with good flash systems. I might be tempted though to buy a 2nd hand D7000 as the flash capabilities would be better. What kind of products do you need to photograph?

italiastar33
29 May 17 2 #23
The tz100 is a different best tk the rx100 the panny comparison is the Lx100. The question us what do you want to use it for? For s travel camera to take good photos the the tz100 is excellent. For an enthusiast who wants to take very good photos then the RX or LX 100 would be perfect, but generally they wouldn't need to ask.

Remember though, the most important factor of taking great photos is what is standing behind the camera, not the camera. A good photographer will take good photos with a £5 disposable camera, the opposite is not true eve with a £5000 camera, although the poor photos are likely to have a better chance of being in focus
CampGareth to italiastar33

Seconding this. I had to choose between the RX100 and LX100, I ended up going for the LX100. My reasons were generally better video chops (4K), a better integrated lens, and better low light performance. There's no denying the viewfinder on the sony wins for accuracy though.

LX100 is a nice camera, but I'm not sure you could compare it with the RX100, as it's a lot bigger. The RX100 is genuinely pocket-able, whereas the LX100 comes with a shoulder strap.

You can buy plenty of cameras under £100 which do the same thing! These over priced ones are just a status symbol like owning a Rolex as to a Cartier, Save your money people as it's the person behind the camera & not the camera! Get of your high horses & buy a £50 - £99 one which will give you the same results!! Good morning ;-)

This camera is better than D3300 with a kit lens so it all depends on whether you buy a good lens to go with the Nikon D3300.

A lot of people used to buy a DSLR but always stuck with the kit lens, if you were one of those kind of people this camera is better. If you are happy to invest in good glass and don't mind the additional bulk then a DSLR is better

This is correct. The deal was available over the bank holiday at £499. With £75 cashback from Sony. I know this because I bought one. I didn't order in time to get first dibs on current stock but they are honouring the price on back order. Should be within the next couple of weeks. Fingers crossed.

Hi,
Any point of getting rx100 first version for 250 after cashback?
Bogue
30 May 17 #58
Totally. The mark one is still an awesome camera. It just lacks a viewfinder, which can be a bit annoying if you're on holiday in bright sunshine. My eyesight aint the best. I can't see anything on the screen outdoors on a sunny day - brings a whole new meaning to "point and shoot" .Mine is still going strong after 4 years even though I use anti motion blur for just about everything (It takes a series of 6 - 8 shots and combines them into one )

If you don't have a steady hand that program alone is a godsend.

I just got John Lewis to price match, but think I will be going with the D3300 as the only advantage this has over it. is the size I believe.
TK42 to fazzx
30 May 17 #60
This deal is no longer available so doubt they will match it. Big advantage is the size, there is nothing better at this size. If you a considering a D3300 there's a lot of options, but the D3300 is a good camera (just a lot bigger).
Mike_HUKD to fazzx
31 May 17 #63
Think carefully about this one. You're comparing two entirely different species of camera. It's like comparing a car to a van and saying 'the van can carry more' - absolutely, but we don't all drive vans do we?

Totally depends what you want it for, but the fact you were deciding between an RX100 and a D3300 suggest you haven't given it enough thought to really narrow down what you need.

A big DSLR is great in the right circumstances, but the world is full of people with great DSLRs that were used on one holiday and have never left the cupboard since.

Agree that the LX100 is slightly bigger, but I preferred it for this reason, as for the shoulder strap, I never used mine but got a quality hand made wrist strap from eBay - a guy in the UK makes them from parachute cord. Theres no denying both the LX and RX are awesome compact cameras though - its down to personal preference, and I always say, handle the camera before buying - it normally makes the decision for me.

Anyone know if the process of transferring photos from the camera using SONY's horrible Studio software is just as slow with this camera as it is with the older Cyber-shots...

With Canon camera, you plug in the USB and you have your pics in an instant, With SONY, the software has to load and you can't download videos unless you use Sony's buggy and cumbersome Software to transfer them.
