I know this isn't my usual drunk kind of advice, but sometimes you can get a skin pinch (won't use my mam's term here!) from the little "flicky" release handle on these and if you get a cheapy rubber band and wrap it around the lower and 'flicky' handle it keeps them together. I know this makes no sense until you've used them and got the nip a few times and shouted all the bricklayers' "hallelujahs and glories" when it happens. This post will get NO likes. It's too esoteric.

... but these do not cost £40!
I don't know why, but whenever tools are discussed on HUKD there are rather daft comments like this.

just picked some up for the odd occasion I might need a set. Downside is that the very top of the jaws don't have the serrations/grips it's just flat jaw... which isnt very useful for gripping rounded off screw heads etc. just something to bear in mind.
but at this price point they seem good value for money! even at the original price.

I have this set and they are OK.......... for the money. My only real gripe is minor, but sometimes the release handle does not 'sit' properly, therefore will not release.

Got these last time...at a fiver they're not bad value, however they are quite soft - I have dented the jaws locking them onto rounded screw heads, and if you try to twist straight on the jaws come out of alignment and slip off the screw. Worth the price but not very heavy duty.

i've had a fair few pairs of these, they are rubbish!, cheap cast metal which fail when you try to clamp anything really tight.
Honestly save your money and get something better.
Cheap for a reason!

What's better, these or waterpump pliers? Also, what's the average plier size for day to day DIY - 10 or 12 inch?

These are ok for the money, but the jaws twist and don't lock that great.
I would recommend the Irwin ones, proper brand that will last and jaws don't twist
