Doh 2tb :-)

I made the decision to go Digital only this gen, as I've got 2 consoles (one for me, one for the kids), the game sharing makes it cheaper but dang that storage space.

Back up Plus Slim model USB3 2GB were £63.40 each in Sainsbury Dawlish last week , they had a whole one.

£69 in Argos (which is now owned by Sainsbury). Need one for my PS4, as the 2TB internal drive is full up :smile:

Just about to test the second hdd and just noticed that the enclosure has already been opened!! and the port where the usb should be plugged in has a male connection coming out of the unit!!!! So the part of the cable that you usually jam into a hdd has been cut off and stuck into the hole of enclosure to make it look like it's all good! The odd thing was the silver security label thing you have to cut to get to the hdd was okay....... and no cable inside. Sigh...
Hope the pedo scum bag who fiddled with this hdd rots in hell. Have to take it straight back now.

I think all the 2TB versions to date are SATA drives.

Read my post above as I wouldn't be so sure about being able to use the hdd from these drives like when they first came out. I've seen vids on the tube of people tearing expansion drives down and then showing a single usb PCB and no usb to sata adapter rendering a possible xb1/ps4 hdd impossible. Try to find a teardown video with your model number before you crack it open!!

Hmm looking at the spec you are correct. What genius designed this specification?! The USB 3.0 Standard A connector is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 but the USB 3.0 Micro-B connector is not backwards compatible. One end of the cable is backwards compatible, one is not.

Its easily the shortest cable of any of my peripheral devices. Would be nice to have it on top of the desk and not the case( on the floor).


I get ~120MB/sec read, ~90MB/sec write. Not sure on your OS but in Windows you might want to change the Removal Policy from Quick Removal to Better Performance.

This is a standard 5400rpm drive - with a decent source/destination and the correct USB3.0 drivers - I get up to 80 MB/s transfer speeds


Standard fully loaded working temperature for this type of portable passive design - although mine hit around 45degC max


Not at this price, and most, if not all, other portable externals use USB native crippled drives - damage the connector on those drives and you WILL have a paper weight - at least with this one you can crack open the case, and remove the standard SATA drive to retrieve it's data by connecting via the SATA interface.

Do you have any other illuminating observations?

I have one of these drives and wouldn't buy another. I think its unacceptable they are using a proprietary USB connector on one end of the cable. With the ridiculously short length of the cable ( ~ 0.75m) it just makes it awkward to use. If this cable breaks or is lost I have a paper weight.

Performance is absolutely basic level too. No danger of setting any records for an external drive.

Temps get hit 50c copying a few hundred GB's at once.

Got to be better choices out there.

I bought one for £59 at my local store (Kings Lynn)
over the weekend. Last one in stock, was about to get the same from Argos at £69! Think this was reduced as it isn't the latest hdd with 2 yr recovery included but as using it with my PS4, wasn't that bothered

I think Seagate has been moving over to a usb 3 only pcb interface, same as WD, with the newer models of these drives. Do your research before you attempt to crack open the enclosure to get at the hdd for a laptop/xb1/ps4 upgrade. On Friday I took a chance and bought two without knowing what was in the enclosure. After a bit of googling and you-tubing I could confirm that yes these were the older models with the usb3 sata adaptor... Nice :-).

Not national., The usb 3.0 is £85 at my local and it took fcking 20 minutes to get one from the staff in order to scan to check the price as there was only an empty perspex box on the shelf with no specs other than Seagate 2TB.
Argos used to do them at this price on and off regularly but not for some time.
The Thailand floods at the factories were years ago that affected prices but for some reason they dont seem to have
come down since then like we'd expect.
Unless you're prepared to go for 6 TB plus, price per TB seems to have a floor of £25/30 at best.

this isn't store specific, this is a sale price for both hard drives. I picked up a 1tb for £40 And the 2tb was also being sold for £59

Same price Lordshill Southampton. 1TB was £40 too.
Had a few of each on the shelf an hour ago.

At Kenton store, there was a sticker saying £15 off the 1 TB model (down to £40) but nothing for the 2 TB model. I took it to the checkout and when they scanned, it came up as £59. Shelf price was £79.
