Thanks for the info, but based on my experience I previously joined the puregym in tottenham hale London and that was like 2 years ago. Last month I rejoined pure gym but this time at the Park Royal branch. I can use the same PIN 2 years ago but I have to pay for the joining fee. Well joining fee is about £10 but is it worth the hassle to close my current monthly payment and open another account for this deal, I don't know.

my only concern is what's gonna happen after the 3 months has passed? will it switch to direct debit? or do I have to pay for another joining fee to switch back to pay monthly?

I took this offer up on Thursday. They take a one-off card payment for the £30. I'd be amazed if they asked for a joining fee after the three months but I guess it could happen.

After 3 months you will have been to the gym once... maybe... but you will have the bragging rights to saying you have gym membership. They will keep taking a monthly payment in case you ever decide to use it a second time... then 2 years later you will realise you just aren't a gym kinda guy...

I had a look at the trust pilot reviews as was very surprised at this. Most of the negative reviews are down to customer service, I think people expect staff (who apart from manager are all PTs afaik) to say hello to them as they enter or interact with them while they are in the gym, not really going to happen (which suits me fine!). Off site customer service I would agree is a bit crap. Number of reports of lockers being broken into, I had this once at a non-Puregym and my wallet was stolen, since then I try not to use lockers at all and never in the changing rooms. Perhaps they need to start replacing with better lockers.

I've been to loads of gyms over 20 years; uni gyms, council leisure centres, large budget chains (Gym Group), large premium chain (Virgin), independent - Puregym is good value. I've been a member at 3 different Puregyms and the class quality does vary. I could nit pick 20 items easily but for £15-£20 a month I will gladly live with them all however 1. music is rubbish and they continually play annoying Puregym TV adverts (something I don't remember when Puegym started), 2. spin bikes are crap although if you're not used to anything else you'll probably find them fine but for me I stopped using them.

I'd give them 4/5, would happily pay an extra £20 for a sports centre gym with pool/courts but they never have as good machines, are never open 24/7 and almost always expect 12 month contracts.

Didn't work for me either despite mine also been listed as one of the gyms doing the offer. However if you search on google for "Puregym (your town here eg. Sunderland)" click on the website for your local branch, then click on the £30 offer from that website, it does work as this worked for me.

If you live in Leeds, ask your GP about the Healthy Living Service. You can get three months off-peak Bodyline membership for £5. That gives you access to 11 gyms, 14 swimming pools and hundreds of fitness classes. Off-peak is from when they open to 4pm on weekdays and all day on weekends.

Commercial gym in Bristol, extensive range of cardio equipment, clean and a great range of classes - downsides are poor weight equipment and tiny machines that you can't fit into. You'll get stared at here if you're a bodybuilder. Heat for the price, but this is definitely a gym for the fitness crowd only.

Trojan Fitness in Bristol gives you a free 7 day pass to see if you like it, no strings attached.

It's not that much dearer normally. Think mine is about £13 a month if you pay a year up front. Used to pay £30-odd at a DW and thought "This will probably be a ****," but was pleasantly surprised by how decent the equipment was.

Gyms have a brass nerve with joining fees. I am always astounded how Americans are willing to pay "activation fee" when they sign up with a new mobile contract. Paying for the privilege of becoming a customer just seems wrong. Although to be fair with gyms the joining fee is really a marketing tool to let them offer you "no joining fee".
