Bought this a few days ago, and have to say was disappointed and have sent them back. They aren't very bright, and the novelty of the different colours wore off in about 5 minutes. Also getting them to work well with Alexa was a real pain. Great idea, but I think I will wait a while longer until the different standards become inter-operable and the tech become cheaper.

The white is very bright I find. Colours maybe not but I prefer to use the colour for mood lighting (sunset effect etc)
I have 4 hue bulbs but only one of the as a colour one.
Can't comment on Alexa but the system integrates very well with Apple Home Kit (so Siri voice recognition works well) and again works well with Google Home and voice recognition on my Google Home.

Uses the Zigbee standard which is pretty much THE standard for lighting. I have about 18 lights running via Alexa and Smartthings and have no trouble at all.

I run Home Assistant here actually, my lights are currently controlled with Lutron stuff, but I'm switching to Hue and Ikea Trådfri. Yeah you can run the Yeelight locally if you put them in development mode depending on Firmware, but you initially have to set them up with servers in China. I don't want any "Cloud" stuff accessing any of my network info.
For non critical lighting like Lamps, WiFi stuff would be okay, but I want a separate mesh network for main lighting that can be controlled locally if the network/internet goes down.

I believe you can set them up using Home Assistant https://home-assistant.io/ to bypass this, or alternatively I could use the switch on my lamp. But yes, valid point about going through their servers in China, some people may feel uncomfortable about this.

Nightmare if your wifi or internet goes down though, it all goes through a cloud server in China.

That's right, no hub required.
Yes, you can create groups in the Alexa app and add all your bulbs to that group. You can then control all your bulbs with one command.

I take it there is no hub needed? Can you link them together...so if you have 3 bulbs in a room - ask Alexa to turn of all 3 with one command? Maybe an option if this is the case

I'm sure hues are great, but I am using those xiaomi bulbs and they are working perfectly for me. I can turn them on, off, change brightness and colour all with Alexa.
Like you, I didn't want to pay over £100 for a set of bulbs. For me they do exactly what I want at a reasonable price. Delivery took a couple of weeks.

Why misguided? Can you elaborate as I was considering these as hues are so expensive?
I got rid of all my Philips hue bulbs and hub. I got a mix of Lifx, IKEA and Osram bulbs now all working via smartthings. for colour I Lifx is the best.
