ADVICE & TIPS: So I see this TV as been reduced again and for the money its fantastic however I have purchased the 43" model and here is some KEY TIPS that every buyer must be made aware of:

1. The picture quality out of the box on this TV is sorry to say absolutely terrible, there is ONLY one setting that is decent and that is the PHOTO setting weirdly enough, all other settings are way over-saturated, to bright or to dim, even with the LATEST firmware updates which add various tweaks, a updated android, a new colour natural setting, but even after the firmware is updated the colours are still wishy-washy and still the PHOTO setting is the only setting that offers a decent, well-calibrated, balanced quality picture.

2. In relation to on-demand apps, only BBC iPlayer is installed and no you cannot install ITV, 4OD on any other on-demand app via google or Philips app store.

3. Android is FANTASTIC and this TV as recently had a NEW firmware update about 1 week ago. However even with the NEW firmware updates your choice on google play is still LIMITED, you must remember TVs are NOT phones and only a limited number of apps work with Android TVs, HOWEVER there is a way around the limited google play apps by manually downloading Android .APK files and installing them manually, you will be surprised what apps do work with Android TVs and you can really install a lot of apps by manually downloading the .APK files, to do this, you 1st need to install ES File Manager, download the desired .APK files from a site such as APKPURE found here: https://apkpure.com/ and install the APKs from with ES File Manager. You MUST however change some security settings which allows the installation from "Unknown Sources", this is found within the Android Settings Menu, you may find the screen rotation problem is evident with some apps, in this case uninstall, for example: If you are a Amazon Prime Member you can manually install the APK file of Amazon Underground & Amazon Music App which work perfectly well and allow you to install games from Amazon Underground, so far I have installed 5 games and they work perfectly well, you can use Amazon Music to but will NEED to use a USB mouse to navigate the app correctly. Speaking of USB Mice, you can use any USB mice with any app and even to navigate the TV, you can even use a Microsoft Xbox Windows Controller which I use to play games... Some apps and games require a mouse and a Xbox Controller, yet I assume any USB game controller will work fine also.

4. The TV Guide on this TV is terrible, and you will notice a majority of icons are missing for channels, sadly this cannot be resolved.

5. Do not bother with the Philips App Store, majority of the app versions or old and I have noticed some do not even work even after all the firmware updates, such as the Radio Apps.

6. HDR, yes this TV does have HDR but you need to change the settings which is found in advanced settings to 4:2:2 & 4:4:4 this is a IMPORTANT SETTING to enable HDR and is NOT activated out-of-the-box, so if you want 4K & HDR you need to find this setting and change it as I have specified. the setting you must ACTIVATE is 4:2:2 & 4:4:4

7. This ONLY as 8GB of storage but is actually 5GB, once the firmware update is complete, even though the TV highlights it as 8GB, 3GB of that data is used by the TV OS and CANNOT be deleted and you CANNOT ROOT this TV believe me I have tried, some Android TVs are easy to root, this is NOT, in-fact after reading numerous forums, due to a core setting Philips have put it place, it makes this TV impossible to ROOT.

8. Constant Freezing & Juddering of the TV PICTURE? this is a strange problem I encountered, You may notice this issue once you have activated the HDR Setting, the picture suddenly freezes and juders, many users must obviously think this is due to the HDR setting which is highlighted once you activate it... I ASSURE all TV watchers however this is NOT the case, this problem is weirdly associated with the TV Guide, if you encounter this problem, the way to solve it is to leave your TV on standby over night, the TV Guide is updated at 6am daily... if you experience this issue its because the TV Channel Guide as NOT been updated, leaving this TV on standby for a few days solves this problem & the problem will never return unless you format. Yes I know strange but true, I have noticed its nothing to do with the HDR Setting at all.

9. Just coming back to apps again, just to let you know you can uninstall ALL apps that are pre-loaded without issues, I would recommend doing so as most of them are European related apps.

10. And FINALLY if you want to get the BEST PICTURE from this TV, check out a guy called DARKO on youtube, search "DARKO TV CALIBRATION" there is a video for this TV which goes in-depth with some settings.. if you cannot be bothered like I say the PHOTO SETTING is the BEST PICTURE SETTING to have, also make sure you go to the setting which reads PICTURE FORMAT and choose ORIGINAL.

Overall, this TV is great, yes it as some flaws, still Android is Great to and for £399 its a great deal, but it does NEED TWEAKING and to get the BEST out of it follow my instructions.

PHILIPS AMBILIGHT & HUE: If any of you are using Philips HUE bulbs as I am, you can sync this TV to your main hue bulbs, which means when you are watching a TV with Amblight on, every other bulb matches the lighting from the TV which is really impressive, you can fill your entire room with dancing ambilight when you watch a great movie and NOT just from the TV.

Great Price , but just a word of warning about Argos Be very careful about Argos when you receive the item double check all the packaging, to see if it has been opened before they sent me 3 used Tv's in a row took no responsibility at all , didnt deny it , blamed it on the ware house and the manufacturer even though it was double opened and re-taped , there missing stuff inside populated data on smart features , and Argos seem to be the only ones selling this at the moment since tis is a special deal acreful when you get it if you double check you should be fine, oh by the way all the Tv's have 4+star ratings possibly because they filter out negative reviews my 2 reviews were never published the only Tv I received with packaging intact turned faulty within 2 weeks dead pixels out of the blue , but i must stress it wasn't this Phillips TV , if current owners are happy and purchased from Argos as they do here its a good deal

I find Photo a little washed out but preferable to most other presets - I've found a personal setting that will do but it changes, depending on the source
There's an icon in the top right of the EPG - select it and choose the Internet as the source - it filled all the gaps for me and might get rid of your flickering problem.
I believe you can move apps to USB if you run out of space.

Many thanks for taking the time to put the tips together - it helpd sway the purchase
The 4K performance is good and HDR makes Uncharted 4 look amazing!
Having Android built-in is very useful - I had Plex & Kodi installed within a few minutes without sideloading.
Another useful feature is the built-in Chromecast receiver (not a generic screencast receiver) which is great for apps that are picky over such things (BBC Store - I'm talking about you!).
HDMI-CEC (ARC) works really well too - turning my amp off and on (unlike Samsung).

All in all, it's stunning value for money - would have clicked again if I could - cheers OP

I got this exact TV when it was last on sale, and here are my observations and response to lettherebedeals' review.

(1) Picture quality was ok, however I do find myself fiddling with picture settings more often than I like, because there isn't really a proper decent profile that fits all programs that I watch. I usually find myself switching between Standard and ISA Day.

(2) Black is not black, it's more of a dark grey. With most content this is not an issue but for some it might be a deal breaker.

(3) Android OS works fine. Most common apps are preloaded such as BBC iPlayer, Netflix, blah. Storage is limited but you can extend with external USB storage devices. There is 1 USB3 connector available.

(4) 4:4:4 / 4:2:2 is not enabled by default, enable it manually to get better quality 4K over HDMI.

(5) I bought this to use it almost exclusively with a PC. It works with my GTX960 very well.

(6) OS is not very stable at times, usually when you're trying to impress a friend with your 4K TV. HDMI ARC tend to fail the most often. Fixes involves either switching input back and forth, or to unplug the TV and do a cold boot. (There's no reboot option in the menu)

(7) Ambilight is only 2 sided (left and right) unlike some higher trim models. It's really adds to the picture but you sort of get used to it and forget about it in a few weeks. Still a nice feature though.

(:sunglasses: I don't use the apps a lot as I consume all contents via the PC, but all apps I've tested do seem to be capable of doing 4K playback.

Bottomline
It's a bargain to get a branded 4K TV at this price, given you're not one of those who prioritise picture quality, and doesn't mind the occasional nitnags or software issues that requires a reboot.

i bought the 55 inch version a couple of months ago for £450 based on a hukd post. i think the TV is, on balance, a good tv for the price but there are, as you say, lots of compromises.

the only comparable tv around a similar price point is a hisense 6000 range and there doesnt seem like much quality difference to this philips.

i slightly wish id spent £200-£300 more and got something with less compromises, but now I plan to stick with this for a year and upgrade to a 4k oled when they drop below £1k. the screen flicker others have mentioned is the thing which irritates me the most, followed by poor blacks and washed out colours. But again, at £450 i paid, its still good enough

I've not really noticed. The size of my screen is a tad large for my room. So the screen display really carries well in the dark. I've not noticed any real issue with the screens black light levels (nothing like I had with my old £900 LG 47 Cinema 3d tv, the light bleed was horrible in each corner).

If you're able to share a photo of your issue, I can try look out for it.
Currently looking at 4k gameplay footage of Battlefield 1, and the contrast/back light & color seems fine across the screen for me.

But why have a go at me?, personally I think colour balance wise the PHOTO mode works well, yes they are better settings if you can take the time to go in-depth such as from Darko or the Settings for the 6501 etc.. Also I did not have to take all that time to give some tips about using this TV, I did it simply to help, in relation to saying RAM we all make mistakes with grammar or typing words etc, but I think the readers knew what I meant, I have now changed it to storage. Still there is no need to have a go someone who was simply trying to help, in relation to my post I have had a few emails saying how it as helped them with their choice, or asking for assistance on finding the HDR setting etc, I did not have to compile my post, I did it simply to help & guide, naturally people will make their own choices when it comes to color settings etc. Also I am not just some guy, I am a person who as feelings just like anyone else, so why have a go at someone for trying to help, give advice or share their experiences.

Reading this post I'm amazed that a TV with so many issues can get so hot, I thought I had found one worth buying.
Looks like I'll stick with my 10 year old hd panny plasma for a bit longer as it has always had a decent picture it just randomly goes into standby and back on again about twice a day which I can put up with .

11 May 17 #117
Yes, their 30 Day Returns Guarantee is a load of tosh nowadays, they won't return most "smart" electrical items unless faulty, as if it has been switched on, they deem it has been used. They will then refer you their tech support team to diagnose any issues and call it a day. Think that applies for most TVs, mobiles etc.
Thankfully I had made a video of the TV set acting up, they did honour the refund in that case.

Is it just my TV set or do you find the backlight on the 55" doesn't quite fully reach all the corners, they appear dimmer than the rest of the image.
I originally had a 49" when the deal first came round and the backlight on that seemed fine from what I remember.

This DEAL is NOT expired still showing £399 on the Argos Website, I think someone who does not like the TV as simply clicked EXPIRE, or they simply cannot purchase it from their local store, so they clicked EXPIRE so no one else can benefit from the deal, its so annoying when people do this, its still available so why click EXPIRED to stop others from benefiting, it may not be available in every store but that does NOT mean the deal as EXPIRED...

For those who really wish to compare tech specs from one TV to the next check out this site: Display Specs & Comparison and do a comparison to see which works best for you, remember though, the UNIQUE aspect about the Philips is Ambilight, yes its a novelty & gimmicky to many but is actually impressive, also the Android OS is identical to the Sony Android OS minus a few Sony related apps & Opera Browser. Also there is a few calibration videos for this TV so you can truly get a perfect picture with some tweaking or by watching a few of Darko TV Calibration Youtube Video. To conclude its a great price at £399 for 49".

It doesn't the difference in quality mainly down to panel type VA vs It's but the experience of watching live TV is better with Freeview Play, I don't really watch much TV, I did check out DVBS on the Philips and it was horrible interface and no channel sorting abilities. I have Virgin Tivo for OTA type stuff but I mostly stick to Amazon, Netflix, YouTube etc

I think the picture might be slightly better on HiSense but not by much, these low priced 4K TVs look good but not enough for an upgrade over 1080p

The HiSense OS is some customised version of Android 4.4 where the Philips is legit Android TV (currently on Marshmellow (Android 6) with Leanback Launcher.
Because of this seems the HiSense app store is curated?

I was looking at the 43" versions when I got mine and what swung it for me was Kodi in the Play Store, so It's super easy to watch everything from my NAS where I couldn't find a single mention of being able to install Kodi on the HiSense.

If you use your TV to watch actual broadcast TV on it (not through Sky or Virgin etc) the HiSense looks better as it has Freeview Play.

The negatives.
Not really enough space for many apps. On Screen settings menu can be a bit sluggish at times. It's Android so it's gonna reboot unexpectedly at some point (has only happened a few times to me in about 6 months). No voice remote and doesn't support USB microphones so searching is annoying.

I own one of these (got it a couple of months ago from Argos for £419), and am very happy with it for the price.

Bear in mind that it's by no means a proper HDR set as it doesn't go anywhere near bright enough - think of it more as 'HDR compatible'. However it's true 4K unlike the cheap LG sets, and the 4k picture is great.

The ambilight is really good especially with hue bulbs, it works with satellite and freeview (unlike other brands with Android TV which only have freeview). It's not freesat branded but the exact same thing. Android TV apps are great and you can use it as a Chromecast. For £400 it's really amazing value.

Where did you get that incorrect info from?

"You need to be covered by a TV Licence to

watch or record live TV programmes on any channel
download or watch any BBC programmes on iPlayer – live, catch up or on demand.

This applies to any provider you use and any device, including a TV, desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet, games console, digital box or DVD/VHS recorder."

"Do I need a TV Licence to watch subscription services like Netflix, Amazon or Now TV?

You don’t need a TV Licence if you only ever use these services to watch on demand or catch up programmes except if you’re watching BBC programmes on iPlayer.

Remember, if you watch or record live TV on any device, you need to be covered by a TV Licence.

Live TV means any programme you watch or record at the same time as it’s being shown on TV or live on an online TV service."

Tv license is needed for BBC content and other live tv shows. It's not needed for on demand content.

Definitely not a novelty imho, the effect is brilliant in movies/gaming, even normal tv watching. So much so, I've DIY'd some crude ambilight onto my LG and Samdung TVs using usb powered LED strips - not nearly as effective but the kids love it and creates great ambiance in the room.

Bought two of these a while back on offers, don't regret it one bit - amazing tv for the price. Only gripe is the continual android related "*random app name* has closed" pop-ups but since the latest update that hasn't happened so here's hoping it's been fixed.

As others have said, install ES Explorer and load up any app you like. Mobdro, showbox etc. work fine. I got BT Sport app to load but it really needs a mouse/keyboard hooked up to finish the setup which I can't be bothered with - I just cast it from my phone which is easier anyway imho.

You can also install apps remotely from google play store on a computer.

Sounds like you got an opened store return TV. If you are happy to keep it, try this;

http://www.support.philips.com/pageitems/master/pages/digitalswitchover/faq/resettv.html

"1. Hold down the menu button on the top or side of your TV for at least 10-15 seconds.
2. An on screen menu will appear asking you to enter the time, date and location settings.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions, and once completed your TV will reset to factory settings."

PHILIPS AMBILIGHT & HUE: If any of you are using Philips HUE bulbs as I am, you can sync this TV to your main hue bulbs, which means when you are watching a TV with Amblight on, every other bulb matches the lighting from the TV which is really impressive, you can fill your entire room with dancing ambilight when you watch a great movie and NOT just from the TV.

just to let you know it costs me £90 to have a lightstrip for the top, you need the lightstrip plus, have got it from ebay auction for £60 and the hue bridge 2.0 for about £30, it is really nice but somehow the tv keeps loosing connection with the bridge, dont know is my bridge faulty or it is because of the tv, going to check tomorrow, already received my replacement bridge today

No TP Vision will play out Ambilight until the patent runs out, then they will put them on all brands they produce, may even put them on them brands before hand IF Philips allowed that in the sale and branding terms of the contract.

I have a feeling TPV will expand Ambilight into high spec gaming monitors under Philips brand - that would play on Hue too

If Philips have sold their TV division like you say do you think this will be the last we see of Ambilight?
Seems crazy with the increasing popularity of hue light bulbs which sync well with these TVs.

Bought this at sub £400 a while ago....great tv for the price but ultimately took it back to Argos as the sound is very poor without a soundbar and youtube had a stutter that I could not shake even though I am on fibre.
For the price though....solid tv!!

Nice TV for the money! Got it for 380 couple months ago. Ambilight is great but works best if TV isnt flat against the wall. Havent had any banding issues....4k from Netflix/Amazon looks decent, sound is adequate. Feet really solid if using. Android good, can install Kodi etc if install ES File Explorer app. Also has a headphone jack, im using a bluetooth sender for my headphones. At this price point i havent found a single thing to complain about!

I have the Hue bulbs in the living room and I am so tempted to get the 55" one using the code as I just pondered too long when it was for around £450 a while back.
My tv is in the corner of the room so not back on the wall all that much.
I'm just wondering if being backed onto a wall is pretty essential to get the most from the ambilight?

we have 2 of these in the household, I'm pretty satisfied
first of mine came faulty, got a re-taped replacement, at the end I went instore and replaced it by myself. no questions asked at all
my partners device is ok from the first minute
i really like you can use your own flashdrive as a extended storage
yes you can put the apps dont appearing in playstore, install es file exlorer, open the app (.apk, you can dowload all from apkmirror, trusted) from your pendrive, allow install from unknown sources and you are good
ambilight is really nice, I already have it extended and put a 3rd (lightstrip plus) on the top of the tv, however sonetines the tv couldnt see the hue bridge but hopefully they will solve soon

Ambilight is great, led so much cheaper than a normal bulb behind to with no effects. Don't regret replacing my Philips plasma with the Ambilight version, plasma does not overheat used occasionally in bedroom so win win.

Anyone considering a TV should consider the Argos Amiblight, exclusive to Argos in U.K. as Philips sold the remaining stake in Ambilight and it's TV division to TP Vision and all the old resellers were terminated as U.K. contracts expired.

The Android OS updates are great, latest 6 is smooth as...you can now install the latest Chrome via setting up a new Google account for the TV and installing from Google Play on a external browser, it will download - you will need a mouse/keyboard for Chrome as it's buggy with remote but flawless with mouse/keyboard (wireless).

I paid circa £300 after Quidco.

Ridiculous !! think their different customer service teams lack co-ordination or cant co-ordinate at all for that matter

I wish Argos would do a better deal on the 32" or 43" version soon. The recent deals on this 49" and the 55" have been fantastic but for the space in my room I need smaller plus my budget is lower - can't grumble with this price for 49" of course. If they would do the 32" for £249 I would snap it up ! Its currently £329 which seems expensive vs the 49" !

Have the Philips hue system already and eager to have an ambilight TV to sync up to it

Great Price , but just a word of warning about Argos Be very careful about Argos when you receive the item double check all the packaging, to see if it has been opened before they sent me 3 used Tv's in a row took no responsibility at all , didnt deny it , blamed it on the ware house and the manufacturer even though it was double opened and re-taped , there missing stuff inside populated data on smart features , and Argos seem to be the only ones selling this at the moment since tis is a special deal acreful when you get it if you double check you should be fine, oh by the way all the Tv's have 4+star ratings possibly because they filter out negative reviews my 2 reviews were never published the only Tv I received with packaging intact turned faulty within 2 weeks dead pixels out of the blue , but i must stress it wasn't this Phillips TV , if current owners are happy and purchased from Argos as they do here its a good deal

i generally agree with you but at least android tends to be supported for at least the previous 3 generations, i.e. kitkat 5 still is supported today and most apps work on 4.4+ too.

at least it'll give you a few years before needing to invest in an external 'smart' box
commenter14
9 May 17 2 #19
Oh good, it's only an entire version of Android behind then! I don't understand why people want their TVs to have software embedded inside. It'll get outdated very quickly, security is generally appalling, and an external Chromecast only costs £25...

I bought a top-of-the-range Samsung Smart TV three years ago, and it hasn't been connected to the Internet for about 2.5 years.

O got the 55". It's a great tv, but I kinda wish I stuck to my old lg and saved the money.

Ambilight is cool, but where the tv is pretty close to the wall, the screens brightness lights up most of the wall behind it. So the ambilight falls a tad flat.

Colors are fairly washed out at times.
Sound is crisp for ps4 but quiet and crap from my sky box (usually having to turn the sound right up to hear the tv).

Android os is great but slightly limited.

Had a issue with the tv where if I was playing the ps4 for a while the tv would flicker black and back to a different picture setting (but no changes in menu).

Philips rang me and said "turn off tv and ps4 unplug hdmi and plug back in after 1 minute."

Decided to run the console under hdmi port 1 so I get hdr support.

Got one of these and they're OK for the money. Not brilliant when watching high action sport such as football or golf as the picture has vertical lines as it pans left to right.

Sounds like banding or dirty screen effect to me. This varies from TV to TV, its basically down to inconsistencies in the layers that make up backlight diffuser. You'll need to be incredibly lucky to find an LCD panel that does not suffer from this to some degree.
