A whole new platform deserved a whole new game, or at least a handful of new GP courses. As someone who's already paid out for mk8 on the wii u I find it difficult to get excited about parting with forty quid for more of the same. You go for gold though by all means.

Does the average poster in HUKD threads criticising/defending brands and products strike you as an expert constructor of electronic devices?
Calm yourself Beryl, what a bizarre comment
You're spouting mainstream console propaganda Kirst, thus your skewed opinion stating technical spec facts are not welcome in here :smirk:
I think you'll find my wording did completely dissect you from the HUKD division of the NDL if you wish to look at it again, I have managed to upset all 'da mushroom mass-if' in here so I do know you're not someone I recognise as one of them.
That article is not about everywhere, yes it's doing well across the pond in septicville, it's doing well in Japan but that is their manor after all and as someone else said above it's doing well across the channel in Juncker's Euroland, namely Mutti Merkel's region.
I can confirm having lived in Germany and Austria there is almost toxic hate towards Xbox by a significant amount of gamers, many a time you hear them talking about the "English and their Xboxes" with genuine disdain.......it's all about Sony and Nintendo round that neck of the woods.
It has clearly had a better start than the Wii U did, of that there is no doubt but it seems we are already getting chatter from 3rd party devs saying it's not really what they expected and we're probably ending up at Nintendo being totally reliant on in-house titles to sell the system to the punters.
That policy did not work too well for them with the Wii U did it, and of course the Nintendo Fans will say it's all about Nintendo's own IP's and yeah I get that myself BUT the vast majority of consumers don't. The types that only buy one console do so for the sort of games the Switch won't have, my life even the FIFA game coming is meant to be PS3 spec. They also quite possibly look at it as an option for another DVD/Blu-Ray player, in the case of the Xbone S a 4K/UHD one, which again Nintendo have chosen not to pursue.
Contrary to popular belief I am not anti Nintendo merely anti their persistent inexplicable corporate policies and anti their lala fanboys/girls, only time will tell if the Switch becomes the roaring success the lovers predict or the abject failure the haters do.
You nailed everything with hybrid concept, Nintendo always has to have some gimmick concept or other when a current gen fully powered standard console with standard control accessories would be just fine.
It's why since the launch of the original Wii they've alienated so many gamers, the casuals have moved on to Candy Crush and My Smurf Village so all that's left is the hard core Nintendo Fans who would still claim it's all about enjoyment and the uniqueness of Nintendo's IP's had the Switch been a 1991 Gameboy :smirk:

It isn't a custom Tegra X1 it is the off the shelf chip without customisation and has already been pointed out it runs much slower than the chip is capable of. 150 gflops is the normal gpu performance for portable mode with 200 gflops for a fast portable mode (likely Zelda is using) and then there is 384 gflops for docked but the chip is capable of up to 500 gflops. There cpu's are run at half speed too, 1ghz instead of 2ghz even in docked mode. It most definitely is a powerful portable though, at least 3x the gpu power of vita, 4x with the boost mode. It's there abouts, about the performance of ps3/360, a bit less here, a bit more there but that is its performance level but as a portable. I doubt it will ever get the range of impressive games those consoles got, they had the best developers who have since moved on to ps4 and xbox one except for Nintendo themselves of course who will probably provide the majority of must have games for the system. As a wii u owner I guess I'm disappointed that Nintendo is now 2 generations behind its competitors when it comes to a home console (I don't do portable gaming as much nowadays), Switch is only a marginal upgrade on wii u and effectively the Switch delivers as a home console what PS3 and 360 delivered back in 2005/6 over 10 years ago. Games like Mario Kart and Zelda BOTW are often better emulated on pc with 4k resolution and 60fps, it's a much better experience emulated than on Nintendo hardware.
Mariokart wii u running in 8k with an enhanced graphics pack on pc here;
What you're asking for is impossible though. The Switch has a custom Tegra X1, that's a top of the line mobile chip. Assuming Nintendo want to keep to the hybrid concept, for it to match the processing power of the PS4/X1 in an affordable portable small factor would have meant they'd have had to steal some tech from the future.

Purchased a Switch on launch for £280 and got Zelda too. Picked up Mario Kart 8 on the weekend and I have no regrets what so ever! The graphics are beautiful and especially when you first see Zelda on a hand held or blown up a big screen. No concerns about the hardware or software from me, the systems are flying of shelves worldwide and that will bring more interest from third party developers.

It was never gonna be able to be or try to be a PS4 or Xbone beater when the mobile concept was decided to be implemented and that was a trade off they were prepared to accept.

Surprise surprise the Nintendo Defence League are still obsessively talking about the Switch's handheld credentials as regards it's lack of power when compared to Playstation and Xbox.

Like I said earlier I have all the mainstream consoles not just this but this is a high power portable console (as far as portables go) and that's what it's aim is. Also ability to do a reasonable job on the home screen too so covers extra avenues.
Doing every use at 90% is Better to some people than a console that does one function 100% well and nothing else that they need or want it for. It has its purpose and application and the sales and constant out of stock sign everywhere is clearly proving that concept.
Maybe it's not for you and that's perfectly fine, but there are evidently many people that find this suits their needs and desires

Well said. By Turtle1992's logic, no product of any type should ever be criticised or have its shortfalls highlighted in product reviews!
His or her comment also omits to mention that Nintendo didn't actually develop the product's core technology because Switch is based on two year old Nvidia technology whereby the custom API improvements were coded for them by Nvidia as has been clearly documented by Nvidia itself.
It's all rather sad that some gamers are so emotionally invested in defending global corporations (who care not one jot about them) that they resort to using logic that essentially seeks to silence debate. If Kim Jong-un made a console then he'd doubtlessly approve of banning people from criticising it!

Cheers for all replies, I'm guessing/hoping there'll be bundled for about £200 come Xmas. We never have much time flee gaming and the pick up/put down family style gaming the Wii provides is what we like and this seems like the natural progression of that console. I appreciate the graphics may not be PlayStation or Xbox level but our lounge telly is still 32 inch so we're hardly modern tech mad lol.
KirstyB87
1 May 171#50
...and the two year old Nvidia Shield on which Switch is based! Both mobile devices feature the same old Nvidia Tegra X1 processor and while Shield runs at the full clockspeed, Switch, despite being a more recent product released at a premium price, is massively downclocked even in docked mode.
I don't own a switch, I never bought the Wii-U so I'm hardly a rabid Nintendo fan lurking. I don't actually know what amibos are or do. :P
I mostly choose to just game on Xbox one these days. Nintendo's last 3 consoles have never been about pure technical power, they have always been about the games. I do wish Nintendo would make a more conventional console but that's not their way and really we have xbone and ps4 so maybe its good to see something different.
Like you I plan to pick up a Switch at a later date.
Smeeble
1 May 17#29
Judging by how rapidly these things drop in price, how much are we predicting this will drop to by Xmas? Missus loves Zelda, and I love Mario Kart so those two games alone would keep us going for ages, hell we still have a Wii that gets used (7 year old loves the dance games and the sports). If it's coming down say £10 a month do we reckon it'll be more like £150 come Xmas? Cheers for any response.
J0n35y to Smeeble

I'd imagine the best you can hope for is a £250 bundle at xmas (not factoring discount vouchers). Switch is still selling well considering a March release and this will only ramp back up when we get to October/November - I suspect Switch may be a Xmas success story too.

Absolutely no way it will be £150 by Xmas!!! The Switch has been a success and Nintendo are having to increase production to meet demand. I seriously doubt it will be £150 by Xmas 2018, let alone this year.
You won't see a significant price drop but can expect a bundled game at a slightly lower price point I'd say
neilanderton1 to Smeeble
1 May 171#48
Entirely depends on if the bottom falls out. 3DS got off to a great start as well and then sales stagnated months later, to the point where Nintendo saw fit to do a massive $80 price drop just six months in.
If the same happens to Switch, expect the same. But no one knows what the sales will be like a few months from now.
neilanderton1
1 May 173#47
This is a dreadful mindset to have, up there with you shouldn't criticise a movie because you would not be able to do better. By this logic, nothing should ever be opened to criticism... and at that point you basically remove the core of what discussion and debate is all about.

Switch seems to be doing great business in the US and Japan plus Germany and France but other markets not such a huge success and in UK fairly low level launch but we aren't a strong Nintendo territory. Not a console I want currently mainly because I have a wii u and have Zelda and Mario Kart already and its some wait until Mario Odyssey.
I think pricing will be based on how much momentum it has. In the UK sales seem to be slowing so I expect we are more likely to get a price drop than the US and Japan for example.

There's no harm in waiting - Nintendo has a pipeline of some strong titles coming out more or less monthly (Arms, Splatoon, etc) during which the e-shop is growing nicely. E3 will likely see a number of announcements with firm release dates and then by the end of the year you will have probably the only game that could possibly topple Zelda in Mario Odyssey.
I have pumped a ridiculous amount of hours into Zelda (and Mario Kart this weekend actually...). Have 4 games on preorder and looking forward to each. I love Street Fighter 2 so much that paying £30 for it is a no brainer for me.
Anyway, sit and wait. I reckon by Christmas, Switch will be hard to resist with it's Virtual Console arriving and some key holiday period launches - and no doubt a strong bundle package.

Lack of games and lack of specs comments are infuriating on here. Yes, other consoles may have more games, but if you only have an hour or two a day to play, Zelda will keep you going for months. Mario Kart is great fun too on friends Switch, with two controllers included.
If you don't want to play Zelda or Mario again, that's fine. But if you want to play two of most fun games around, you'll need this.
The specs for this as a handheld are fine - Tegra 2 would have been nice for battery/power but it's good enough to run Zelda. There's enough games coming through with Arms, Splatoon, Mario and Skyrim to surely keep most people busy? There's only so much time to play these games - have over 10 games on XBox from Games with Gold which may be good, but I'm never going to get time to play them so kinda pointless.
Can't see it being any cheaper for a while with the cost of making these and fact that they're selling out each day they appear in stock. Be crazy to reduce price when rarely in stock (although wouldn't put anything past Nintendo after cancelling Nes Mini)

Every console is obsolete on release due to inbuilt obsolescence. In an ideal world, the Commodore 64, Amiga, or Dreamcast would still be the pinnacle but things move on.
