The Nintendo Switch is the new home gaming system that offers unique versatility and exciting new gameplay. It has already caused a stir for its unusual design, comprising of a tablet touchscreen, two Joy-Con controllers and a charging dock. Gameplay is designed to be completely immersive on the Nintendo Switch console, with the HD 6.2 tablet screen offering up to 60 frames per second in a compact package. When played on a television screen, the graphics are equally stunning on a larger space. In hand, the Joy-Con controllers engage with the player, with a realistic rumble function to mirror the action on screen. They also are capable of sensing shapes made by hands, as well as external movement and distance for optimal motion control.

Wary of all the boogey man stories but not the harsh fact there are literally no games on it? You sound like me. Got it day one, haven't played it more than 5 minutes (honestly, not joking) and I own 4 games for it.

Apparently the joycon problem has been fixed with the latest batch of consoles. Not sure how widespread the screen issue is, and it shouldn't be a problem if you use a screen protector, which would be wise anyway with a handheld console.

Yeah I've played zelda and I'm around 60hrs on switch, and still plenty to do. Played Mario kart alone and with friends on the go, must be around 20hrs. Downloaded kamiko which is meant to be fantastic, but too many games to play atm. People saying there are no games obviously not looked on the store where there are 49 games available.
Graxer
22 May 171#14
There certainly isn't a shortage of good games on the Switch! I have Zelda, Mario Kart, Minecraft, Kamiko, Shovel Knight, Fast RMX and Snake Pass. In my opinion they are all amazing games. All consoles have a shortage of games on release, but the Switch has been recovering from that very quickly!

To be fair to it I think it's had one of the better recent launches in terms of software, (not a particularly high bar, granted) although I, like you, played Zelda on the U. Coming out with one of, if not the game of the year as your day one is a pretty strong way for any console to announce itself, no?

Not really. If it's a game available on your own console from a previous generation. But we're not working in real world logic terms here, we're working with nintendo they get a pass.
If the xbox one were to be released with halo 4 as it's first game would it still be a good idea?
Yeah Zelda is a nice game, but game of the year? Not by a long shot. Only if you haven't played horizon zero dawn, nioh, resident evil 7, nier automata, persona 5. Especially nier automata and persona 5.
I am just as much of a fan of the xbox, ps4 and switch so I try not to let impartiality cloud my judgement.
If you want my advice, trust me, buy the switch, just not yet.

I haven't opened any of the games actually lol. I know, I know how it sounds, but after I started playing zelda on the wii u, it just didn't make sense to start from scratch on the switch. Plus the wii u version has certain perks.
I currently own zelda, mario kart, lego city and bomberman on it. However these games just don't inspire the playtime out of me, and I don't get that much time to play video games anyways. The time I do have is spent playing nier automata which I finished recently or nioh or persona 5. I don't want to play mario kart on the go because, personally it's embarrassing for me being on the train and whipping out a switch and controllers to play mario kart. Personal preference, not criticising anyone else.
Still, let's not prevent the nintendo fanboys (like apple fanboys) from trying to over-analyse my life choices, I mean how dare I?

I suppose the difference is no one had the U to play Zelda on it. for the vast majority, BotW is a launch title first and foremost.
I've not played Horizon yet, but it's on the pile. Persona 5 doesn't tickle my pickle, and I felt Automata was disappointing. (Although I do remember feeling that way about the first game, it took a while and a re-play before I started to appreciate it) I think short of RDR2 (if it's released this year) not a lot is going to catch BOTW in game of the year terms, I'd imagine that'll will show in the press too come the end of the year.

13 million people bought the wii u, hardly no one. Nier automata is a deceptive game. really mediocre from the initial look with the cutesy japanese lead and the underpants showing and all that. However look deeper and it's a surprisingly deep and poignant game. In fact once you finish it, it requires you to finish it a couple more times to get the full story. I just finished it once and watched the youtube explanation of the rest of these endings and it;s really rather amazing.
And please, they could release a videogame worthy of achieving world peace, eradicating hunger in africa and zelda will still get game of the year because, zelda. We all know it.

22 May 17#32
So much BS getting thrown about. Left joycon issue was fixed at the factory by end of March, so a mute point now. Screen scratching can easily be prevented by a tempered glass screen protector. The console never gets hot enough to affect the screen protector.

Issue was fixed at the factory end of March, so any joys cons made after then will not have the issue. Why would they keep selling faulty joy cons when it will cost them money to repair them? Easier and cheaper to just fix the issue at the source, which is exactly what they have done. I had to send my joy con back as mine was bought on launch day.
Not protecting Nintendo blindly, just pointing out that some people are scare mongering when most of the issues raised are now fixed or can easily be avoided.
Biddy2
22 May 17#40
Some must be still slipping through then because I've seen people still report the issue from newer shipments. Just googled about the factory level fix and you're right there so i apologise. Either way, they're not faulty anyway. If they were faulty, everyone would run into the issue.

Ditto, just counting Zelda; I've played this for many hours already. By the time I was done with that I Played Snipperclips and PuyoPop Tetris and that lasted me until now when I'm playing Mario Kart whenever I get the chance to play anything. I imagine by the time I'm done with that I'll likely be playing Arms or Splatoon 2! Then Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Fire Emblem Warriors and Mario Odyssey.
Cannot praise Nintendo enough for this launch - even if you don't want the console. I don't think anyone can deny that they have handled the launch of this console really well. There's very little wait between amazing games. IF they can keep that up - we shouldn't have to worry about the massive droughts the Wii and Wii U had. Third parties are showing more and more interest in the console and that can only be a good thing for owners!

I always wait till current gen consoles reach £100 so it's not too weird.
Like PS4's and XBox Ones are about £100, so worth it now. So for me yes £270 is still too high for a single console, I might get a Wii U soon cause theyre approaching £100.
Not everyone has unlimited cash, which some people can't comprehend even though we're on a money saving website..
Biddy2
22 May 171#47
That wasn't the point of the post. There is a running theme on the site where people enter deals they don't intend to buy at all, with a comment like "Will wait until under £200 with Mario Kart" for example. When it reaches £200, they'll drop the price they want to pay to £150. It's been happening since the Wii U launched and doesn't really help anyone. My comment was making fun of those comments.
We're all here to save money, so nobody is making fun of anyone that can't afford to pay for a product until it's reduced in price. My apologies if my comment caused offence as it wasn't intended.

lol I think it's slim enough already. I've noticed that the Joy Cons have begun to 'curve' (because of the way I hold them) so I wouldn't want it any thinner than it is now. And with heaviness, it's not too heavy. Battery life is pretty much the same as the 3DS but I admit it could be better (and maybe the charging while playing system could be better too, as I have found it gains little percentage when charging and playing)

It depends on whether you own a Wii U or not.
If you never owned a Wii U then the Switch has plenty of quality games that you won't have played.
If you do own a Wii U the Switch doesn't really have much to offer unless you need its portability aspect.
So for some it has plenty of games, for others it has very little they haven't played before.

We got our Switch from Amazon and it suffered with Joycon disconnection issues. Amazon fobbed us off to Nintendo who eventually confirmed it as the reported known problem but Neon controllers have up to 4 week lead time for fix\replacement. Contacted Amazon advised peeved it's not a fault but a design flaw known about prior to sale, and unhappy they new these issues existed and did not inform or warn customers but continued to sell even though it was known large numbers would require repair. Amazon apologised fully and refunded 30% of the cost.

McHotpoon
22 May 171#83
Well we will see how long it takes, not sending off till after our holiday as we wanted our daughter to be able to use the Switch as it works fine why the Joycons are connected. Amazon did offer a full refund, but I was happy with £83 refund and going without controllers for a few weeks. Nintendo said the plain controllers are a lot quicker to get back on the phone. This kind of stuff goes on all the time behind closed doors, years back my dad's place supplied Argos with electricals and found faulty poor quality parts that would cause high failure rate +20% so told Argos they would be delayed while repairs took place. Argos lawyers informed them in writing, breach of contract failure to supply and would be seeking damages and costs for non fulfilment. They had no choice but to supply shoddy goods even though it would damage the brand. Argos don't care as they just refund faulty item at the manufacturers cost, while the manufacturer works their backside off to less profit than Argos make on the sale. Not a fan of Argos anymore knowing they are happy to supply poor quality kit to fit a price point or make sure what is in the book is on the shelf even if it will die well before 12 months if used....

22 May 171#84
This is just my personal opinion... seems like companies aren't really that invested in making high-quality portable gaming nowadays. It's usually spin-offs or games that don't deliver anything close to console-quality experiences. Android has some and probably an ultimately bigger roster of games than the Switch will get - I'd get a tablet over this, even if it means those touch-based controls. The Vita only delivered a few OMGs so I don't see this doing much better.

I would expect the Switch to be more successful in this regard, since it's Nintendo's primary platform going forward. The Vita was never a primary platform, but while both the Vita and this were/are overpriced at launch, the Switch will get much better support down the line, and hopefully they'll bring it down to a more sensible price with a hardware revision.

1) Zelda isn't exclusive to the switch
2) "Coming this year" means they're not out. Seriously the launch is disappointing with no unique titles.
Personally I felt £50 for a game and £280 for a tablet that cant even browse the internet wasn't worth it so I'm going to wait until there's more games, prices fall and maybe until there's a revised model that hopefully at least has half decent battery life. I decided to just get a preowned wii u because there's no way I was paying full price for inferior goods. I like nintendo in some ways, but in others they just take the ****. Though even the prices of some of the wii u games remind me why I've mainly been a PC gamer since the ps2.

Battery life is fine mate, I get 3-4 hours and it charges quite fast via a USB C. I take a power pack around with me but rarely need to use it.
I'm a PC gamer too and yes console game prices are mad. But to be fair the hours I've had already out of Zelda, MK8 and Puyo Puyo I can't complain. Only Rocket League has come close in terms of value.
I previously had MK8 and BOTW for the Wii U until I could afford a switch and trust me the resolution upgrade is noticeable to a PC FPS chaser like me, it looks so much crisper. It also looks 1000x better on the gamepad.
PC and a Switch is a perfect combination in my eyes. Unlike other consoles the Switch offers many good reasons to get it if you already are a PC gamer.

24 May 17#105
Tbh the fact that you said that you rarely need to use your power pack suggests to me that you acknowledge that it's battery life is low but don't want to admit it. Imo that's not a good thing because it sets a precedent and tells them they don't need to focus on improving it. Obviously different strokes for different folks and all that, but I'm going to personally wait until the switch is in a better place. I just hope they handle it better than the Wii U because there's no way I was going to pay full price for it. I do have my concerns though.

Bought I was a protestor at the price but just can't be arsed to wait any longer. That must be worth something lol.

I bought a battery pack because people on here kept going on about it, shouldn't have listened to them. Genuinely it is not a concern and the only time I have got the power pack out of my bag was when I was camping.
With a bigger battery comes more weight, heat and bulk. I'd prefer a slimmer smaller device personally.

I very much doubt it mate. As stated in the first line of the OP. It's a pre-order for this coming Friday.

Totally agree with this. Battery life on the Switch is absolutely fine. I've been doing three hour commutes for the last few weeks and it always has about 14% left after that. Been toggling between Zelda and MK8 and the journey time just flies.
Thought I needed a battery pack too so I bought a large capacity USB C one, but I haven't had to use it yet.

Just to update it was changed to 'Dispatched' at roughly 11pm last night so it's now on it's way. It's Friday the 26th tomorrow so, although it's still not certain, I would hope it arrives. Fingers crossed it does. Thanks for your reply!

Mine arrived today. Game didn't though lol. Got my screen protector on which was fun but it wasn't Zelda.
I'll have to make do with the Arms demo over the weekend.

Horizon Zero Dawn is horrifically over rated, imho.

Haha, I've played most of those games and BOTW is on another level. It's almost impossible to do a direct comparison. Zelda is in the same league as GTA 5, Mass Effect 2 and HL2, itsa once in a generation type of game. Whereas half those titles you mentioned are good but they are hardly genre defining.
Game of the year for sure.

Careful if buying games from Tesco. Not worth the saving. Still have had no games turn up at all and they take your money. Tempted to cancel and order from Amazon instead.
Edit: Games arrived 5 days after console. Not at all great but they did arrive .

Finished zelda on the wii u though.

Those main menu screens must have been really off putting!
I've not played Horizon yet, but it's on the pile. Persona 5 doesn't tickle my pickle, and I felt Automata was disappointing. (Although I do remember feeling that way about the first game, it took a while and a re-play before I started to appreciate it) I think short of RDR2 (if it's released this year) not a lot is going to catch BOTW in game of the year terms, I'd imagine that'll will show in the press too come the end of the year.
Don't want one now.
Cold till about £150.
Cheers buzz, heat added.
And please, they could release a videogame worthy of achieving world peace, eradicating hunger in africa and zelda will still get game of the year because, zelda. We all know it.
How is the battery life on these? I fancy having something to play when lying in bed or on the train etc.
Early adopters always get shafted and I don't want to be one of those.
I'll stick with my 2nd hand Wii U for Nintendo goodness for now.
Not protecting Nintendo blindly, just pointing out that some people are scare mongering when most of the issues raised are now fixed or can easily be avoided.
Like PS4's and XBox Ones are about £100, so worth it now. So for me yes £270 is still too high for a single console, I might get a Wii U soon cause theyre approaching £100.
Not everyone has unlimited cash, which some people can't comprehend even though we're on a money saving website..
We're all here to save money, so nobody is making fun of anyone that can't afford to pay for a product until it's reduced in price. My apologies if my comment caused offence as it wasn't intended.
usually about a tenner.
I understand a lot of people here fall into the parody you were portraying
If you never owned a Wii U then the Switch has plenty of quality games that you won't have played.
If you do own a Wii U the Switch doesn't really have much to offer unless you need its portability aspect.
So for some it has plenty of games, for others it has very little they haven't played before.
dont listen to the haters, the switch is a great console. So what it had a few bugs at launch, Nintendo fixed it.
PS4 and Xbox 1 had their share of launch issues.
I have a ps4 pro and xb1, but i am still amazed at how good the games are on the switch. I take it on work trips, helps pass the time when I am away from home.
It is better.
best thing for me are the many varieties of ways you can play. I tend to play in bed with the case stand on my tummy and hands by my side with joy cons in them.
your value from it may depend on how much you might game on the go
Zelda, Mario Kart..... YAWNNNNNNNN
You're an absolute diamond.
HEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAT!!!
:man:
Like every other console, disc needs to be present - even if you install.
Missing out on Mario Kart and BoTW at the moment... both on the Wii U. Until the time where there are several must have games unique to the Switch and potentially price has fallen/there is an improved model out I don't think I'll buy one. I still think early adopters will get shafted.
If Nintendo make some good decisions over the next year, the Switch could really take off. The virtual console aspect I feel will be key and it needs a good implementation. Being able to play some older GBA or DS games would be wonderful- There are also a fair few SNES rpg's I've never played/finished- I could finally tackle these during my daily commute!
The biggest problem is that it's not just me who likes it, so does my 12yo daughter! She keeps nicking it I find her hiding at the bottom of garden playing Minecraft with her mates.
Seriously considering getting a second one now, also intrigued about multiplayer on two screens...that would be super cool.
