I honestly didn't see this coming up for pre-order before the current gaming code offer expired. It definitely looks like a £129.99 RRP price, so a £10 saving whilst available is decent enough for me.

"Save £10.00 when you spend £75.00 or more on Video Games offered by Amazon.co.uk. Enter code VG10OFF75 at checkout. Here's how (terms and conditions apply)"

https://s13.postimg.org/okl4lk82f/Screen_Shot_2017-05-04_at_09.00.30.png

I'm tempted to get my pre-order in, payment isn't taken until dispatch, so if it comes up anywhere cheaper, I'll jump on it.

The 3DS XL is currently £170 on Amazon.

But how relevant is the 3DS lineup now with Switch having released two months ago, compared to when the new 3ds handhelds were released? How many games for the 3ds lineup have been released over the past year compared to previous years?

How many people actually used the 3d function on their 3ds handhelds? Only a few games actually enforced it well like Super Mario 3d Land, and the last Pokemon games ditched the 3d.

Very iPhone'ish - very Funtendo

However for some reason, it just looks flimsy and cheap in comparison to the 3DS/XL consoles, almost like they want you to break them!

2DS (which at the time I expected this version, not what they offered) did pretty well at somewhere between 5 and 6 million sales. Looking just at the back catalogue of Pokemon I think this will do pretty well with the XL and better looks than the 2DS. Tempted to trade in my old 3DS XL for this one.

Is it matte or glossy?

I hate the gloss on the N3DS XL.

Good price that, but as a New 3DS XL owner I have no need for one. I might consider biting further down the line if they do a Zelda themed one though

This is my problem. I have the Link Between Worlds special edition "old" 3DS XL and I can't bear to part with it!

Kids. Makes perfect sense. Clamshell design, no 3D, half the price, huge library of cheap games. And it can do them Pokemons.

Been waiting for this. Using the £10 code would be stupid, add a £20+ game and get £20 off.

Except for cost - why would you get this rather than a switch? Just back catalogue or?
magicjay1986 to exexpat

Comes down to cost I suppose. If I was travelling anywhere 3+ hours i'd take both. DS back catalogue especially with all the Zelda titles is incredibly strong.

can you play ocarina of time on these? or is it just a 3ds exclusive game?

You can play it on it. Just think of it as a 3DS with the 3D turned off and the slider removed

and the fact that this won't be as likely to break. this thing should be bullet proof whereas a fly could break a switch just by looking at it funny

Although in fairness, I don't think any of these tests covered whether it would withstand a funny look from a fly.

Crosshash to donerkebab
4 May 17 2 #38
Very high as fundamentally, it still uses the same architecture as the New 3DS / XL. However, it more than likely will ship with 11.4 which so far has not been cracked (but if history is anything to go by, will be hacked in the future).

Best thing to do is wait and see. I too am only interested for homebrew reasons (I want to play Japanese games).

I think they mean a 3DS, but without the pointless 3D, in a clamshell design, i.e. not the crappy 2DS, and with the extra controls of the new 3DS. No reason why they couldn't have started with that back in 2011.

4 May 17 #39
This is tempting. My Original 3DS is 6 years old and I'm feeling like an upgrade is soon to be needed. With this it's got better specs, more buttons, bigger screens and a cheaper price (all in exchange for the 3d gimmick which I hardly used for most games). Also means I can play those N3DS exclusives like Xenoblade Chronicles and the SNES games on the eShop.

For the age of the hardware in these things, I don't think these have any right being any more than £100 tops. Bear in mind how old and simple the base 3DS hardware is, plus it wasn't really cutting edge even at launch, Nintendo will literally be getting those chips for pennies.

The only slightly advanced and admittedly very clever thing about 3DS was the ability to have glasses free 3D, which was really pioneering and clever for all it's foibles. However, now this has been removed leaving a cheap flimsy under powered handheld and yet people are still queuing up to buy it at a pretty high price IMHO. Don't know how Nintendo gets away with making their hardware blatantly cheaper to produce by cutting out it's one unique feature, yet managing to charge more for it?

No idea why anyone would choose this over the New 3DS line that has fully working 3D on it thanks to the IR camera tracking, now that was clever....
jsty3105
4 May 17 #64
I love the 3d on my 3ds. works brilliantly with monster Hunter.

the extra nub was probably a hindsight decision that yes, they should have designed it for it back then. However, there really aren't many games that need it or use it, so what use would it have been with the launch model?

lol I've owned 3 version of 3DS (the original on launch,XL and New XL) and I've had enough, the thing should have been obsolete years ago.that screen is so low resolution and just gives me a bitter feeling when I remember that.uncomfortable too..(all of them).some great games, but the hardware was just terrible.and it's unbelievable they made 6 versions of it..when I remember I payed £250 for that blue 3DS on launch..the original with all that 3D nonsense hype I feel stupid and it feels it was a decade ago..and here is a "new" model..ofcourse its just the plastic body that is new lol

4 May 17 #68
i agree the 2ds got a big 2nd wind early last year so that helped sales and on balance i prefer the styling and the direction nintendo wanted to go with it. This though, so late in the day seems a bit pointless to me (and the price!) And although you cant really judge by just one pic (im gonna anyway) it does look a little cheap almost like a chinese 3ds knock off might. Proof is as always in the pudding or these days the specs and the minutia so we'll see i guess.

I expect most will have done the original ds in any form to death but if it is for your kids just grab a an original 2ds when the clearances start or heck grab a dsi or dsixl for them instead there a lot cheaper on you know where. And dep on your morals certain cards can be bought v cheaply now.

JohnnyRoller
4 May 17 #99
I don't know anything at all about the build quality. Hence why I said it "looks" like a worse build quality. If it is cheaper then there is a reason behind it, which will not just be the lack of the 3d option.

The 2ds is definitely one of the ugliest things Nintendo have released, so this is definitely an upgrade to that. However it is most definitely a downgrade to the New 3ds XL.

A newer revision of an electronic product (that's not specifically targeting the budget market like the original 2DS) is likely to have a better build quality as they tweak any issues that were causes for common warranty claims on the older revision.

For anyone complaining about the specs of the console, they should know that games are what make the console successful. And the 3ds has a GREAT library.

jsty3105
4 May 17 #108
Pretty much that one has 3D and the other doesn't. the New 3DS XL is the top tier of the 3DS family. The New 2DS XL comes below that (though not sure whether it sits above or below the New 3DS)
ST3123
4 May 17 1 #109
It's a well worn argument. The 3DS does have a great library but then so do many more powerful consoles. The PS4 has a great library and great graphics because it's a much higher specification. The PC probably has the biggest games library there and is can obliterate any console there is specs wise. They don't have to be mutually exclusive, you can have great specs and a great library, though someone really should tell Nintendo that as they still don't seem to have gotten the message since the Switch is way off the cutting edge too depsite only coming out this year....

harlowlad
4 May 17 #114
No. Amazon wrote me back saying:

Our technical team has contacted me to advise the reason you were unable to place the order for the 'Nintendo Handheld Console'.

The issue seems to lie with the colour of the item. The turquoise one is available for pre-order but the orange shouldn't be showing as available at all. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

I have tested the checkout process with the turquoise console and it all seems fine to me. If you want to order the orange one, we won't be able to fulfil the order until the release date: July 28, 2017.

The people complaining about the hardware inside the 3DS are probably the same people who were claiming that the PS3 was worth £425 at launch - just look at that amazing Cell processor inside! Errr, right...

Still, it's not as clear-cut as just "games" or "hardware". It's about the overall experience. There are some excellent games on 3DS that cannot be had anywhere else - but the experience is marred somewhat by the lower resolution and awful, awful, awful battery life. Oh, and region-locking (although once you take steps to fix the region lock, then to be fair, all the games are then free - way to shoot yourself in the foot, Nintendo!).

And at least there's the option of larger screen sizes with the 3DS range. I never picked up a Vita not just because Sony abandoned it prematurely, but because the screen was significantly smaller than my smartphone's. I'd probably have taken the chance on a Vita XL.

As someone with no interest in replaying Mario, Zelda et al, the 3DS is tempting to me for Monster Hunter 4U and Generations, half a dozen Etrian Odyssey games, the Bravely Default games, Fire Emblem games, and all those Shin Megami Tensei games (Strange Journey's getting a 3DS remake later this year!). And as I'll need to fix the region locking, that makes for extremely good value for money. :man:

I'm completely out of the handheld console loop now. Can anyone tell me if its worth trading in my mint Nintendo 3DS XL for this? Even got it's original box.
otterboxer
6 May 17 #138
ah, only ask as know someone who had some small issues pre ordering once being in highlands and islands. no probs.
otterboxer
6 May 17 #139
I cant personally tell you to do it no but japes aside If it was me i'd hold on to it.

I think the (and I never thought i'd say this) original  2ds is fit for purpose and the new 2ds's only real advantage will be the ability to play snes eshop titles and xenoblade chronicles 3d. (so not much) No point in talking battery life yet until its out there and getting real world tested so to speak.
ST3123
6 May 17 #140
No, not at all. The New 2DS is mostly marketing hype with little substance. It's basically a handheld that is now over six years old with it's one unique and innovative feature (glasses free 3d) stripped out, yet shockingly still retails well over £100.

If Sony released a 'New' PS Vita, which removed features, but was still expensive, it would be rightfully ignored and lambasted, yet Nintendo does that and everyone seems to be swooning over it and can't wait to get their pre-orders in.

Nintendo becomes more like the Apple of gaming every day....

I'm not sure why some people are hurting so much over this new console? The sheer heat this has reached for a mere £10 off, should be telling you how much other people, not called you, want this. You Vita fans can relax - we're not going to make you buy one.

Personally, I've wanted a 2D version of the the 3DS since it came out. I mean a proper one like this, not the old cheapo 2DS. Until this point, I've stuck with my original DS. I indeed cant see why anyone who had a 3DS XL would buy this though since it's basically the same machine with one less feature...

i did, they said it was fine. so i googled it, common issue with games dropping online.
jsty3105
6 May 17 #143
Hard to say. But you do have the trade off of slightly more power (really to run Xenoblade Chronicles 3D) and to access Miiverse/internet without shutting down your game. All you're really losing is the 3D effect and for your console, unless you have a limited edition one, the value is not going to appreciate.

Why would you expect a 7-yr old technology with low resolution, TN non-capacitive touchscreen cost £150? Last time I've had a resistive screen with stylus it was on my Palm device 15 years ago.

If anything, it should be around half of the RRP by now, most £50 Chinese smartphones have better spec and screen.
ST3123
9 May 17 #147
This 100%. The 3DS was never strong technically, even on launch. Now it's prehistoric, especially the ultra low screen resolution, which ironically IMHO is more noticeable in 2D mode. So Nintendo take out the one thing that was quite clever technically, 3D with no glasses needed, and the one thing that mitigated the low resolution a little and ask what isn't far from New 3DS money for 6 year old tech.

Worst of all people are positively going mad for it too, even after Nintendo repeatedly treat loyal consumers like garbage, most recent example? by dumping the NES mini while demand was at fever pitch....

Games. It's all about the games.
jsty3105
9 May 17 1 #149
I take the point about the costs and the price but resistive screens aren't automatically inferior to capacitive screens. They serve different needs. For the stylus-based gameplay on the DS where precision is required on some games, resistive screens are better. Arguably, this would be the last generation where Nintendo steers towards requiring such precision in games - purely because game design has already shifted away from it.

TLDR.

This is every bit a last attempt to milk us for more money by releasing a product line inbetween the 2DS and the 3DS XL.

...just bought a 2DS Mario Kart edition, typical!! Does this have bluetooth?
BenderRodriguez
10 May 17 #151
Which is great if you're a 13yr old girl, or have one in the house, but milking this cow is getting really out of control and consumers should not encourage this kind of practice.
