Is it worth paying the extra £30 for the 8500 x8? I'm not techy, I just see the numbers.

Was wondering same myself.

8500 has a few advantages but is an older unit with a slower CPU.

General consensus from the the posts I've read is that the R7800 is the way to go.

the ea8500 and r7800 have the same chipset it's just clocked slightly slower. Both suffer from long range 2.4ghz disconnects so if you need that, get a broadcom unit like the r7000. Apart from that the r7800/ea8500 are the most powerful routers you can get short of netgears r9000.

I just cancelled my order for the R7800. I got the last one they had so if you want one keep refreshing the page you may find it comes up for sale again. I went for the R7000 in the end as it should be ok for my needs. My son has that model and says it's superb. Don't forget to click the link for the X6 (R8000), it's actually less by a couple of quid compared to the R7800.

I'm trying to decide whether to go for the R7000 or the R7800 here...

What are the main benefits or upgrades in the R7800 in real world usage? I've looked into reviews and they both seem similar.

I'm mostly looking to boost my Wi-Fi range and speed as I currently use an old D-Link DIR-655 because I needed something that allows two Xbox Ones to play on Open NAT types (a number of routers don't seem capable of doing this - You can't open ports or use a DMZ when you have two Xbox Ones, I just use the UPnP on my current one) the downside of using that router is its old and I only have 2.4Ghz Wireless so speeds are nowhere near the 200mb+ download I get on my wired devices.

I'm sure either will do the job way better than my current router (as long as they have good UPnP) but would there be any big difference in the R7800?

He went for the R7000 not R8000 unless that was a typo from you?
t2lek
4 May 17 #26
I've got the R7000 model and it is fantastic. However, just be aware that if you own a Microsoft Surface Pro then all of the routers listed above have issues with it. It's down to the drivers that the wireless chipset used in the Surface and has been an issue since the Surface Pro 2. I have a Surface Pro 4 and Microsoft still haven't acknowledged or fixed the issue. I have to run a second router just for the Surface which isn't ideal otherwise you have to put up with download speeds of up to 5-6 meg max.

This is well documented on many forums.

I've contemplated swapping my R7000 but I'd only just bought it at the time and didn't want to throw away £100.

Other than that though, it's been flawless with all other devices and has been the best router I've owned to date.
cheaperbythe12 to t2lek
5 May 17 #38
Interesting. Was looking at one of these routers to upgrade from my old Asus. I have a Surface Pro 3 so will leave it for now. Have you found any way around the issue? sounds like my old Dell XPS 15 laptop which had a terrible wi-fi card onboard though not had any issues with the surface when travelling.

I have an R8000 as my main router and an R7000 as a wireless access point. My Surface Pro 3 works fine.
Other than I should probably switch my routers about for their current function everything is hunky dory.

Jalfraag

No it isn't. The R7800 is more powerful than pretty much everything bar the R9000. Its only drawback is poor 2.4ghz performance at long range.
PR1
4 May 17 #29
hmm missed the r7800... :disappointed: what else is decent, I guess R7000 zad AC68u are getting a bit long in the tooth, but need to ditch the shockingly irritating BT Smarthub - EA9500 any good?
Jalfraag
4 May 17 #30
The ea9500 is pretty much the same as the netgear r8500. It's OK, depends on what you'll be using it for. It has the same soc as the r7000 too, fairly old. The ea8500 is better.
PR1
4 May 17 #31
quite liked the look of 8 gig ports, but not at cost of wifi, can always chuck a switch in... I guess relatively heavy home use - 2-3 devices streaming HD/4k and maybe 10 devices on wifi concurrently for web/mail/etc. So you reckon EA8500's better - I guess that's based on qualcomm vs broadcom mu-mimo and age?
Jalfraag to PR1
4 May 17 #32
I would think any of them would be fine for that usage so the ea9500 would seem a good choice. where the qualcomm/atheros wins is cpu power if you were to run openvpn on the router you'd get much more throughput.

Make sure you update the firmware immediately if you're running the 7000, there's a vulnerability with the stock firmware.

I was informed on chat that it was 1 year warranty but you will only get a refund.
Smartguy1 to wackyraces
5 May 17 #37
This is what it says on their website.

Do products come with a warranty?
No. Used products generally do not come with a manufacturer's warranty but all of our items are backed by Amazon’s satisfaction guarantee.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Amazon-Warehouse-Deals/b?ie=UTF8&node=3581866031

So the question then is what is Amazon's satisfaction guarantee. According to the details section on the item it states 30 days. You can't check that now for the item posted as the Warehouse Deals option is out of stock but you can check it on the R7000 which is still in stock. It states

Condition: Used, Very Good
Comment: Item is in original packaging, but packaging has minor damage. All purchases eligible for Amazon customer service and a 30 day return policy.

To me that means if it breaks after 30 days Amazon won't do anything about it. However, providing the item has not been previously registered with Netgear you maybe able to get Netgear to repair it or replace it. I always register my products just in case. I am sure these items will be fine and I am not sure what Netgear's warranty terms and conditions are but if they apply to first user only and it breaks in month 2 you could be saying goodbye to £100.00 or so.
wackyraces
5 May 17 1 #39
This is off the forum when someone asked the same question,
The reason the items cannot be replaced is because there is no "stock" to replace your item.

Buying from Amazon Warehouse means you will still get full Amazon customer service, just as if it was sold by Amazon themselves.

A replacement is not available if it is or becomes faulty - but you CAN expect a FULL REFUND if it is still within a year of purchase, past 1 year, an exception can be made (and with Amazon's customer service being second to none, this is not uncommon, within reason).

In my time working with Amazon, the worst story I have heard from Warehouse deals is a customer receiving the wrong model of external Hard Drive (possibly a listing error) - Which he was refunded in full, free return and £5 off his next purchase for the hassle.

This is the same as what I received on chat. Not really sure now.
Smartguy1 to wackyraces
5 May 17 #40
I still can't see anything on their website which states they will refund a used item should it become defective in the first year. I doubt a copy of a chat conversation from a single employee will help much in a fight should there be a problem although Amazon's customer services do appear to be very helpful. I googled "Amazon's Satisfaction Guarantee" but found nothing. If anyone can point to an actual statement from Amazon from their website regarding warranty repairs or refunds for used goods that will put this to bed.

I received my R7000 today. You could see it had been opened but the product is mint. No marks whatsoever so assume it was a customer return. From a warranty aspect I am not overly concerned as I would have paid around the price I paid for a used item off eBay and I wouldn't even get 30 days to return from there. Will get it configured over the weekend but my fibre connection appears to have three different WAN interfaces, one for ADSL, VDSL and ETHWAN. Not sure why it has the first two so hopefully just using the ETHWAN settings will work unless anyone knows different. I have replaced my router a few times before on ADSL but not since I had fibre installed.

Received my R7800 router yesterday. Absolutely mint and not even opened. Easily setup and working great. Had to dig out my old BT fibre modem for use with it unless anyone can advise how you connect it without the modem.
