Just my personal opinion but I'd always favour a phone with at least 32GB of storage. App sizes are getting out of control so it's nice not to have to worry about that or getting the running low on storage notification.

I think at the moment if you're looking around £200 take a look at the Lenovo P2 for £209 from 3

Just bought this phone, took a bit of getting used to after using a Samsung for years. I bought the 3gb / dual SIM for about 25 quid more off Amazon. Good battery life, not a laggy phone.

Hopefully the G5S+ should have NFC and compass.

I have got this phone and using at moment. it's very good all round phone. why do you need a compass, the last time I used one was in the scouts!. Fast good display can make n receive calls!, down side, speaker not loud enough. I have put in sandisk 128gb SD. if this is not good enough, buy a iPhone or Samsung s8 7times the price. so....HOT DEAL.....I thank you....mic drop...boom

25 May 17 #48
The lack of compass has only been a slight issue for me when using the phone for walking around a city trying to use the maps to find some place. With a compass the phone knows exactly the direction you're walking and so the arrow on the map points the way to go, on a non compass phone the arrow just points up all the time and you have to move the phone around to figure out which way to walk. You end up walking the wrong way a fair amount of time. In a car the GPS is sufficient as the map assumes you're on a road so tends to be very accurate.

I've had this phone for a few months now and it's really nothing special. The family's G4's are much nicer although we've had problems with ghosting...Battery life is average and it frequently freezes and /or slows down. Basically no better than my original moto G except that it sometimes has 4G and has a slightly larger screen.
lordrobs to dave7

Uh oh :disappointed: I just pulled the trigger on one of these as my Moto G1 is dog slow now with it locking up on a blank screen for 30 seconds at a time with relatively simple tasks like opening my Facebook notifications.

I was going to get the G5 plus so I can dual sim for work use but decided it would be more of a pain with having to have work set up the emails and stuff on it and everyone else at work having iOS as we are supplied with iPhones.

25 May 17 #46
I think hot and cold is subjective, based on value on money of each deal. In this case the lack of compass make the phone not as value in my prospective
heydi
24 May 17 #41
cold, the phone does not have magnetometer compass
robertoegg to heydi
24 May 17 #45
I don't think that's the point of this site - it's for finding a deal on a product, however that product comes spec'ed. You can't get a moto g5 with a compass so your "cold" is pointless and misleading. Capeesh?

(I do, however, agree that a lack of compass on the moto g5 and g5 plus is dastardly.... the plums..)

I recently bought the slightly more expensive 3gb of ram version (only on Amazon I believe and I'm not referring to the plus model) and for the money I'm delighted. No lag and near-stock Android. I like the idea of the duel-sim (personal and work number) but the second sim slot is lost when you use an SD card.

I read quite a few reviews/comparisons before buying and this phone was consistently near the top. For the average user, with average needs I believe this is a good, all-round safe bet.

As reported plenty of times on Youtube, and it's getting a bit tiring the rumours about this phone, the camera is not crap, it is mediocre especially in low light, and the youtube lipsync has been fixed with Nougat.

I read that the Dual SIM G5 (not this model) does not have 3G+3G (or 4G+3G) on both SIMS at the same time like the dual SIM G4+ does. Something to check especially if you're a Three customer....

Have one of those decent data plans with your usual mins/texts (works out cheaper sometimes)
Work sim and personal sim on the same phone.
If you go away you can use a foreign sim (assuming its unlocked) for texts and calls while there but have your personal sim still on to receive messages if thats important to you (although roaming deals are decent these days)

There's a few uses. None Id use personally mind but there are uses.

G5 Plus is down to £229 at CPW, supposedly a much much better phone than the G5 according to most reviews.

I can't get the link to work, sorry. Not sure if it's a limited time offer as it was £269 the other day.

Also another £5 off via Quidco.

I'd recommend getting a cheap pay monthly deal on a Moto G4. Something like this:

https://shop.tescomobile.com/pay-monthly/mobile-phones/motorola/moto+e3/tariff ?sku=57282

It's a great phone for the price. It's fairly big so I'd check it in advance to make sure you're happy with it. £180 would be the cost for the phone plus data and calls over 2 years which isn't bad.

The Alcatel Idol 4 deal at Sainsburys PhoneShop is still available. Its probably the best value deal at the moment for only £99. The screen is 5.2" but its the same physical size as most 5" phones. There is a lot included in the box too (VR headset, JBL earphones, 2 cases, screen protector).

Well the biggest problem with the Lenovo P2 is the camera which is utter crap. And don't even know if that YouTube lag is sorted or not.

This phone has a much better camera compared to P2 and is way cheaper.

I have been a loyal Samsung phone customer for years and have been happy with them, however their prices have increased and to get the latest Samsung you are looking at £600 upwards to purchase out right, so I decided to take a risk and go towards a budget phone. Moto G5 pleasantly surprised me, a good build, the specs were more than enough for daily browsing and using apps, I went for the Amazon 3GB ram, so running multiple applications are a breeze. The build quality and spec may not be near the latest Samsung's however for a below £200 mobile for daily average use, this is a winner. Plus battery life I find very good, lasts two days for me.

TBH that's not Samsung's fault - our network operators use their purchasing muscle to 'discourage' Samsung from selling dual sims in the UK market. In terms of cost of production, the difference is minimal.

Really don't want to continue being mugged off every other year in the flagship trap, so going for a midranger this time.

Not sure whether I should get a G5 or a G5plus (from motorola's website when they start accepting the Unidays 10% off code again). Only use for mostly offline playback of google play/spotify, light browsing, google maps, banking and whatnot, nothing intensive, no gaming. I know a G5 would be fine, but I don't want to be wanting to upgrade after a year because of how long it takes to load a browser for example.

Any advice? Thank you :]

Moto it's no longer value for money compared to honor huawei. Bought last week g5 plus for f1.7 camera which share same sensor as S7.What disappointment I compare it with my honor 8 , LG g4 and LG g5, In terms of noise, dynamic range and details it's crap. Screen response lagissh compared to my previous p8 lite and honor 5c. Speaker volume compared to g3 tiny and flat sound.Moto it's over the last one value for money was g3. I was lucky as paid only £135 second hand on Gumtree and sold back for 200, If you want good phone no grey import with warranty look for honor on vmall or 2 hand on flebay as 1 negative point they don't keep value, same story with LG.

I said ZTE was better value for money and comparing specs doesn't mean anything, it depends more on the individuals use of the phone.

Having used both phones, personally I prefer the feel and slimness of the ZTE but the screen size of the Moto. In actual use there was nothing between them, apps installed at a similar speed, screen responsiveness, loading and use of apps. Neither phone are used for playing games so couldn't make any comparisons there.

For general use, social media, emails, web browsing, the occasional phone call  I wouldn't spend twice the money on the Moto G5 if I had to do it again.

But then again, both are only new phones, ask me again in 6-12 months and I might have a different answer :sunglasses:

Bought the 3Gb version from Amazon for my wife to replace her broken Vodafone Smart Ultra 6. It's a great phone and has a quality feel to without paying crazy prices, nice screen, very responsive, decent battery life. However, having just picked up the ZTE Blade http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/zte-blade-vodafone-65-pay-go-basket-price-75-with-top-up-2gb-ram-16gb-memory-2685206 for £75 with top-up and £1.29 to unlock of eBay (in less than an hour), IMHO the ZTE Blade is better value for money and would of bought that over the Moto if I knew about it earlier.
