My daughter is a student medical doctor and she has no idea how to connect speakers.

Be sure to check if she's learnt how if you ever see her at your GP.

At least you edited your post to post some vaguely useful information.

You obviously have never done any research. Asking a simple question about an item/product/thing, on a website that is 'promoting' it or discussing it, seems a good place as any to start researching.

Ha ha ha...that old snake oil quote..... Some good quality cable is always nice to have but not to that level.(If only because the cheap stuff is like bell wire and easily broken)

If you haven't got a long run of cable to make then a few meters of Van Damme Blue will do the trick nicely for a couple of quid per metre...or else some 2 core mains flex will do the job nicely.....

Personally I only use this cable....

These sound ok but bass isn't impressive and the drivers are pretty small. I have STR-DA2400ES amp and Jamo sub at the moment - a 3.1 setup. I think a sub is must with these if you want decent bass.

How about the KEF Q500 as front? http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/kef-q500-speakers-pair-black-349-superfi-2599830

After a bit of advice. I've just put up a projector (Optomoa HD36) to replace a 55inch LG TV. It will be used for films and gaming. The projector is known for it's pretty decent speaker so I can make do for a while.
However, having seen the Denon amp deal and this speaker deal at Richer Sounds I'm wondering whether I can grab them both and then ad rears, centre ans subwoofers later - will I be able to match these add ons fairly easily ?

Should be fine, normally the lower the rated ohms/resistance of a speaker the more voltage the amp has to put in at higher audio volume. Just means you can go louder @ 8ohms with less stress on the amp. As for the rears you don't need that high a volume for them movie wise but for surround music (5.1 SACD/DVDA/DSD/DXD/FLAC) I would go for a matching set.

I've 4xQ acoustics 1030s, 1000ci and a B.K. Electronics XLS200-Down firer. Music wise it sounds pretty impressive for such a cheap ass setup as I offload all bass at 70Hz to my subwoofer.

Except for the subwoofer everything else is dirt cheap 2nd hand off ebay so around £550ish you could pick up the package.

You're making way too much of this. I'm far from lazy and posted my comment after a busy day studying, going into town and doing heavy gardening, all whilst having long term health issues. Although I wouldn't use this forum as my only source of information, I think it's a great community where I often find really good advice. Think of it as having a little chat with friends before doing some more serious research if the need arises. By your logic noone should ask for information (even though you're still answering queries in this very thread :man:). Also, what happens if I use Google and it brings up a link to hukd where someone has asked for information? Sorry, I think I'll just Google that.

Unless yours are mullered then almost certainly not. HIFI is very subjective of course.... why else would THE respected consumer magazine insist they can hear the difference between one set of interconnects and another beyond a certain point.

25 May 17 #80
The cable they sell here or similar is all you need. No need for anything more.

Anyone looking for an amp to go with these might like to take a look at the classifieds in avforums. Although while you are there you may as well pick up some cheap speakers as well. AV gear depreciates rapidly you get a lot more for your money second hand.

I love their "Burn In" service extra

The Missions will give you more bass but will be lower in sound quality than the B&Ws. It depends what you consider as "good sound" - more bass or clearer sound?

On webpage with deal is review, where was used this combination. It's bit on edge as there is amplifier with 30 watts per 6 ohms and you will feed 8 Ohms floorstanding speakers so amplifier will work harder to keep same level of sound as amplifier with 30 watts on 8 Ohms.

Good advice, and like you, I have chromecasts all around the house.
However, Bluetooth 4+ over apt-x has a 330kbps bit rate, so for most people, there's no compression (as neither Spotify or G Play stream FLAC). Of course, if you have local files with higher bit rates than this, then you're quite correct. Only Sony seems to have bothered about this, with the introduction of the LDAC codec. I have a Sony 1040 AV amp that will transmit over LDAC to the LDAC enabled BT headphones I use. Not convinced I can hear a massive difference to be honest...

Don't worry. I know what you mean about research. The human 'filter' is waaay more advanced than GOOG search. An area can be a mine field - mine is PC's - and its much easier to as a human, interact with then and come out with knowledge of what you need to know/do as a one off incident in life rather than sitting for hours trying to figure some hardware x software x software x etc interaction that I'll never need to know about again.

Yep you right, but HUKD is primary about deals, there are also lot of people who can give incorrect advice or just trolls. It's bit random, and if it's going about your money.. . Specialised forums give you greater chance that you will get right answer discussed and confirmed by more separated, experienced folks. HUKD can point you there (I found myself good forums true HUKD). You can ask your general practitioner about your cancer treatment, but you can't expect same info as from your specialist.

Experience from 1998 until now. To find right sound for you can be long, expensive experience lol. There is lot of snake oil in hifi and apart of new connections and decoders are older amplifiers ''stronger''. I forgot about one more point, new speakers should not be on high volumes from start. Give them bit time to lose stiffness. If there is by-ware option on amplifier and speakers use it. For home cinema it's not so relevant as for music. And I mean music on instruments not electronic music as there is all mixed in, nothing is left for nature lol.

Which is why I said 'would be better asking on a forum (like this)' using 'like this' as an example. Plus I have received plenty of good advice on HUKD, I mean with such helpful people like yourself loitering here, what else is to be expected.

Having spent a small fortune getting the lounge right these would be a nice upgrade from bookshelf speakers in the spare room. Is your response just on experience??
Jo444
25 May 17 #61
Yes that will be ok (if you don't like ''shaking house'' volume). Hope you enjoy. Try to keep distance between 2 speakers at last 2 meters, that will open stereo sound, top speakers in level with your ears (if you sitting there) to keep details for you and turn speakers so they point cones on you and main sound-wave just don't pass around. There are lot of videos on YouTube how to improve listening.

Getting a cheap amp is a good shout. To get back to basics, the amp it the device that amplifies the source of the sound e.g. phone, ipod, CD player, cassette deck etc.

Old amps are still very able as the technology hasn’t changed much but new amps (and receivers which are amps that also do home cinema) have features such as bluetooth and wifi for streaming.

However, with an old amp you could add functionality such as Bluetooth streaming using a Bluetooth audio adapter (such as https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bluetooth-Streaming-Wireless-Receiver-Speakers/dp/B01CZVCYU0) which attaches new tech to old tech using the humble RCA (phono to phone) cable for a couple of shiny pounds.

You could pick up an old amp from freecycle for nothing or spring £40 or so from gumtree for a model make by Denon, Yamaha or Kenwood. They are unlikely to stretch the speakers sonically but will make a great sound whilst not breaking the bank. When it is time for an upgrade you can keep the speakers and upgrade the amp to one which is better or a receiver for additional functionality.

Lol again do research, some random medic student will buy cables for £15k just cos you told so. I checked personally 7 diff. cables between £20 - £1200 in Richersounds, you sometimes hear what you wanna hear there. Just like you don't eat fish&chips with caviar you don't mix super expensive components with lower class. In shops they try to sell everyone cables from top range of course, just like car sellers a similar shops. Some cables can change sound a bit, silver make sound opened, twisted help with interference and so on. If you bought cables for same price as speakers you really overkilled it, first think of main sound source (dsd, sacd, 192khz/24bit flac or just 320 mp3) then chose right amplifier. For student, who play 320kbps mp3 or youtube 192kbps max quality is no real reason to spend for amplifier more then £150. He/She can buy great components on ebay, gumtree or even car-boot sale. Companies like NAD, Denon, Maranz, Onkio (not that yogurt), Yamaha are great in base good amplifiers. Like somebody mentioned here, just buy Van Damme Blue for those speakers. You can't really hear difference in this price level. Connect amplifier with Chromecast audio(£20) and you can play music from phone, tablet, pc ...

It's just one method of research. My starting point is usually asking someone with experience of what I'm interested in. And no, I dont think it's quicker to find out about something specific just by searching - you would need to know what you're searching for, for that method to be effective. A site like this generally gives you better and more specific advice about products, than a lot of others out there. Mainly because you are asking people who already have some experience of the item.

I think most people looking at a certain product, needing some specific information on it, would be better asking on a forum (like this) than scouring google etc. That's not to say other methods of 'research' aren't helpful though. And Facebook and smart......hmmmm

hcc27
25 May 17 #43
Yes it is, but indirectly. As these are passive speakers, you'd need an amp to drive them. Ideally, if you need to connect these to a smartphone, you should look at an amp or micro system with bluetooth /Spotify Connect/ Apple Airplay functionality. There is a range of these on RicherSounds, as well as of course with many other retailers.

https://www.richersounds.com/products/hi-fi-separates/separates/amplifiers-receivers

An alternative is to get any old amp without Bluetooth/ wireless functionality and link it to your phone via WiFi using a Chromecast Audio plugged in to a line in on the amp (this will set you back £15-25). You can then use Spotify Connect, Google Music or play your local tunes from your phone. Chromecast Audio actually delivers cleaner, higher quality audio than Bluetooth as there is no audio compression using WiFi.

The cheapest option is of course to get a line out directly from your phone to a line in on your amp - you 'll need a £3 cable..

I personally use a couple of Chromecasts around the house - it's a fantastic way to listen to your Spotify on your old (but perfectly serviceable) kit, plus you get multiroom audio at a fraction of the price of say a Sonos system.

I need a pair of front speakers for my 5.1 setup. I've got the dx1 5.1 speakers, but managed to lose one of them! And can't find seperates anywhere. They're rated at 4 ohms, whereas these ones are 8ohms. Is it still Ok to buy this or can someone recommend an alternative? That is true too, but isn't it usually quicker to find out yourself. I'm a student too, if there's anything I want to learn about, or understand, I can usually find out much quicker by just searching for it and understanding myself.
