Know this has been posted at this price before and the new Surface Pro is due out soon but this includes both keyboard and pen so didn't think it was a bad price.

More optimistic than me, I reckon these will just disappear like the Surface 3 did.

I had an M3 Surface for about a week. It's just not fit for purpose. The hardware is woefully underpowered and frustrating to use. Couple that with the typical buggy Windows operation and it's a bad combination. I would say wait for an i5 variant if you really have to have a surface. but to be honest seeing as Windows as a tablet OS is a very poor experience in comparison to Android or Apple based machines, I would say for most tablet mode won't get much use, and so your money would be better spent buying a better spec'ed dedicated laptop for the same or less money. Just my two cents.

I replaced my day to day work laptop with the Surface Pro 4 but the i5 version. It has been great. Think this is a bit underpowered to replace a laptop though. Sure it was this price around Christmas time. At the time I wanted an Xbox One S and they came with one free so that offset the price difference a bit for me compared with the lower end model.
128gb will fill up quickly, I think Windows uses about 50gb of this before you even do anything. 256gb really the minimum I'd say although you could put a memory card in the micro SD slot.

Which for many is too large for a device that is still primarily a tablet.
I know a lot of people with small tablets but everyone who went large sold it and moved back to smaller.

There is also iPad Pro 12.9"..

I do think Apple has a better shot at making a hybrid device because Windows just doesn't have the range of software that is useful in tablet mode.
But I'd never want to use a laptop with a screen under 11" for long as it's just too small.
So one way or another they are all compromised in my eyes so you have to decide which is more important to you and choose a device optimised for that which in my case is a laptop.

Hi guys
I was looking at this or the newly released iPad pro 10.5" model?
I have read the comments above but can anyone help me.
I already have a MacBook for general laptop use - this would be to replace an old iPad which is woefully slow and unusable?
Jimmyboy to jsd14
10 Jun 17 1 #35
I personally wouldn't recommend it as a tablet replacement. Think of it more as a touchscreen laptop. It's pretty heavy and awkward to use as a tablet.
Tequila to jsd14
10 Jun 17 1 #36
I think the 10.5" iPad combined with new features of iOS 11 (which are only available on new iPad Pros due to required more RAM),sound very promising.
Files App specially allows file management which is do important for productivity and not available on iOs until now.
I was thinking iPad is dead and iOs so limited to replace a laptop but new iOS 11 fearures and new 10.5 iPad Pro can actually replace a laptop imo.
I'd say specially since you own a Mac,an iPad Pro 10.5 running iOS 11 provides you a better, seamless experience than Surface Pro.
the battery life of Surface is very bad and Windows is simply a bad experience in tablet mode.
I like Windows 10 and Surface but iOS 11 is a game changer imo.

Don't buy the M3 model you will regret it.
Buy the i5 with 8GB Ram or move on to something else.
you can get the i5 8GB 256GB around £800.

Determined to wait until the i5 version drops to a more reasonable price, heard far too many complaints that the m3 just isn't worth the money for what you get.
Flancrust
1 Jun 17 #31
I can't see the price dropping much more. the cost of components aren't really going down. core things like the ssd and screen so can only imagine that rather than dropping these on the launch of new models they will just bump the cost of the newer models up.

at 560 with keyboard and pen I'm really tempted
priceyrice
31 May 17 #30
trying to decide whether this is worth it at £560 or to wait for the i5 bundle to drop below £600 (hopefully). Arghhh.

I have the i5 8gb version and swear by it, love it as a computer and a tablet. Still as good today as the day i purchased, start up in less than 10 seconds only issue is battery life has dropped a bit but that's normal with most laptops (and I am awful at removing my charger when fully charged).

Just seen the comments above about using the pen to mark up PDFs, I need to do this! My pen has just sat in my desk since purchase 18 months ago.

Highly recommend buying one, just can't decide if the m3 model is worth it.

I bought the m3 model from Amazon on the £566 deal and for my needs can't really fault it. I use it purely for uni work and watching films. Purposely got the fanless version so it's quiet. I run SPSS, MS office and browser with no issue at all. I know I could have bought a cheaper laptop for that work but I do a lot of PDF mark ups and the portrait, pen and tablet mode works really well for me.

29 May 17 #24
I wouldn't buy one of these myself, I have a 3rd gen 8GB 256GB surface pro for work, it's too buggy with windows, given its made by MS who also make the OS I would expect it to work flawlessly, it's far from it though. For the same money you could get a laptop that puts these to shame.

Hi there, may I ask what case you use with the surface pro 4?

Thanks in advance

This is one IT Refurbisher we get stuff from sometimes (I work as an IT refurbisher too), not many people know about it. Not much point adding them as a deal on here as they never seem to have much stock of the same models all the time. This isn't the Spectre model but looks to be a pretty decent price. Their stuff does have some scratches on it sometime, but generally well checked over >

I was a big fan of the Surface Pro but the world has moved on. Sad truth is that Windows 10 in tablet mode is meh... It's lags well behind android and ios and frankly i don't know why they bother with it. Woeful app store, scaling issues, endless looking at the spinning loading circle waiting for yet another win 10 update to finish and so on. The Surface Pro is good as a full laptop and for those who take advantage of the surface pen's writing and drawing capabilities. Otherwise one of the increasing number and steadily improving 2 in 1 hybrids might be the better choice for most folk.

29 May 17 #21
Your comment is contradictory. Why go for one of the 2in 1 devices if the problem is with windows 10? The same issues will result. However, I have a SP3 and since purchase its got better with updates. Excellent machine for many tasks. Pen input is very good. Screen is excellent. PDF annotation excellent. Can't think what device I could replace it with except a newer Surface Pro

Point taken. After spending £1200 though it was so much damage out and about I was worried about more round the house. The case I have isn't too bulky and still light. You're right though it does add to the size.
jaydeeuk1
29 May 17 1 #18
See if this comes back in stock, I had one and imo its better than the pro (unless you need pen input). MS helped in the spectres development so its tuned as much as the Pro and comes with very little crapware. Battery life is an easy 8 hours, can push to 10 if you dim stuff and reduce max cpu speed.

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-spectre-x360-13-3-fhd-2-in-1-ash-silver-10147537-pdt.html

I 'upgraded' to a 7th gen i7 envy model, but other than outright speed its worse in every way.
HotBot
29 May 17 #17
However, once you have put your Surface into a "proper" case then it has become bulkier and heavier! If you are going to take it with you then you will still need a carry case (backpack, briefcase etc.) so have gained nothing. I slip my 12" MackBook into either my backpack or a small shoulder bag and it is fully protected without adding to weight I don't need.
gazm2k5
29 May 17 1 #16
Why would I want this when they just announced the new one. For just double the price, I can have the exact same specs.
Jimmyboy
29 May 17 #15
Agree, however if you put them in a proper case they sit on your lap nicely like a normal laptop. A case is a must as it's expensive if you drop it.
HotBot
29 May 17 1 #14
If you want a laptop then buy a laptop as these are not actually ideal in your lap! Unless you really think you will be using it in tablet mode at least 50% of the time it is too compromised. However, if you have a MacBook I would just get a new 12" MacBook (or MacBook Air if you find a good price) if it is portability and reliability you are after.

Doesn't seem that great a deal when the i5 version with the keyboard could be had way back in November for £629 from PC world.

Cue time machine comedians but unless the Intel M3 is from the Ming dynasty era so appreciating in value I can't see why this is still so expensive.

I had a m3 4GB model and stupidly replaced it with a Lenovo i7 convertible laptop for £400 more and I have missed the SP4 ever since. I said I might pick up a i5 8GB one but at this price I'm very tempted.

I have the i5, 8GB, 128GB and it's VERY good in laptop mode, not such a great tablet to be honest. If you want a tablet I recon an iPad is much better but the Surface could easily replace a midrange laptop.
