I wood look at 32mm boards this will distort and warp and be springy. Try your local independent builders/timber merchant they will do a better deal on a better quality product. Use this deal as your bargaining chip. Remember proper builders merchants have 6 or 7 prices loaded up on their screens, ask for T4 which equates to trade 4. the best quantity rate. If you wander in asking loads of questions you will get retail rates (double) this is the reason why builders merchants open on Saturday mornings. Builders don't work weekends!
Research-Be confident in what you want-Get the best price- If you don't ask to see the manager to see if he can do any better. NEVER NEAR CLOSING TIME, LUNCH OR SATURDAY
also end of the month is a good time when they are looking to achieve targets for bonus, It might be that GP is up but sales are below target

I work in a timber merchants, if you come in asking for the "T4" code, you will be looked at in an odd manor and asked what the fudge you are going on about!
Obviously this person is a "retail" customer thinking they know everything when they know nothing!

Relax, haters gonna hate. Those that find your info useful will appreciate it. Others will genuinely believe that that little series of numbers bottom right of a sales screen for example are random when some may suggest it's actually the markup and margin to help the sales guy know how much "price play" they have. If you're after cheap decking then this could be great. If you are more discerning it may pay to explore options and chat to your local Indy store as well. If someone shares their experience, take it. If your experience is different, maybe share that too, but what's wrong with being objective and complimentary? My "cheap " decking is 9 years old and still fine having been treated. However it is springy cos of how I built it and some bits came off in this years pressure wash. Always bargains to be had and the more knowledgeable you are the stronger your position so thanks to all for your tuppences. Remember , no such thing as a sale imo, just a time when retailers are happy to make less money from you....... although I have had deals at less than cost in the past.

Will you guys give it a rest? A mate of mine is a builder, extensions mainly but also garden stuff, and he works every day. Not sure where this builders don't work weekends lark is coming from? As for pricing, every outlet is different. Some give anyone a discount, some are fiercely loyal to the trade side, but nothing is set in stone.

Aha "guy behind the till" at a shed by the sound of it. If builders worked Sundays then the Proper builders merchants would have to reply to that demand and open on a Sunday and Saturday afternoons
Like I said before no price is set in stone at a merchants in fact most of them don't display prices which is against the law but not overly policed. so you state in one comment there are only two prices at your tillpoint but then go on to say in your next comment there are other prices available for quantities, so which statement is correct as they contradict each other. Maybe your employer doesn't trust you to manually apply these price breaks what is your personal GP at the moment? any where near bonus this month? I do occacionally look on netmums for parenting advice as it happens but I haven't seen any threads regarding pricing structures at builders merchants. Indecently which buying group does you builders merchant buy through?

Why are you being such an arrogant know it all? The guy was just trying to give people some good advice. Don't know why you feel the need to put him down as from your quote above he was correct. Discounts are available based on quantity. Try sharing your advice instead of belittling others - that's what HUKD is for.

I am the "guy behind the till" and all outlet/merchants work differently depending on what sales system they are using.
There is a price for retail and a price for trade.
Obviously on larger orders there is a lot more movement on the discount that can be given. but by how you are saying it its like there is a auto discount on what you buy!
I am unsure where you are getting your info from, probably a forum on "mums net" and as for builders not working weekends, they do!

hahaha I can assure you that our prices do not change on a weekend. nor during the week. We have 2 prices a "trade" and "retail". Obviously the trade get the cheaper price!

Would this stuff be OK to make a shed door.700x2000mm And I was thinking a step further, how about a set of double garage doors each Approx 4x6 (feet) the type with side hinges.
Many thanks in advance.

Just what I need for some fence repair jobs. A bit wider than I would have liked but at two quid for pressure treated timber, I couldn't care less.

Ok so correct me and tell me how it works in an independent merchant in your Manor. and when you've been promoted from yardman to sales let us know what margins you are your are looking at "T4" was an example
So.. buy
1 plank you get Retail rate
10 planks you get T1
20 planks you get T2
50 planks you get T3
200 planks you get T4
Whether it is T4,T5,F2,g19 there are always quantity breaks that the guy behind the till can overide to a certain extent before it gets to a point where a manager has to approve or maybe the sales dept rather than the counter staff.
Where do you think my info is coming from as a "retail" customer? (knowing nothing)

No I used get reps calling round trying to get me to put some into stock. I succumbed once and got a pack which sold quickly but a lot came back twisted generally the timber mills use up the poorer planks with more knots in it to make the thinner decking boards and sell them cheap to the sheds like B&Q and Homebase knowing full well that most people purchasing from there don't have clue what decent timber is. That isn't a slur on the sheds patronage. I wouldn't have a clue how code in python and wouldn't give any advice on the subject however I do know timber and the way merchants operate which I am sharing with you.
Also get two quotes I forgot to mention that as it just seems obvious to me. Play them against each other, be happy and don't moan. They like people who are happy, they want to make you happy, they want to get the sale rather than the competition. Don't get complacent though. If you get a cracking deal say 40% off retail don't think that everything else like screws, nails timber will all get the same discount, they will try to make it up on high margin screws which is when you bring out your toolstation or screwfix book.
Play the game it's more fun. I tried asking for a better price in homebase to a blank faced kid who thought I was talking another language
If you want look here for an independent there are others of course

I bought all the stock of these from my local B&Q three years ago. Nothing wrong with them good quality and I've had no issues with them since being put down
Plus much easier to fit in the back of a hatchback

They have these in the Leicester Abbey Lane store. But they are only grooved on one side. I believe these in the listing are too, but the description is wrong. You can clearly see on the B&Q website in photo 4 that only 1 side has grooves.
