Yeah, my Mum went through 2 of these bootlooping. Consensus is the poor quality solder and the molten lava that is the SD808/810 causes it.

Very good price though and for £99 you can't go wrong even as a secondary phone, voted hot

I had to wait three weeks without a phone because of this.

Their reason?

We have run out of motherboards.

Just shows how many need to be replaced.

Would never go back to LG now because of the bad experience and constant phone calls getting nowhere.

I know many here will be aware of it, but those that are not, I would be wary of this in large thanks to the boot loader issues that many (including myself) experienced. It was dealt with promptly for me at least back when I bought the phone, how much support you get now? I am not so sure.

3gb of ram. I'm actually replying on one now. Great price but as previously mentioned it will be buyer beware because of the much documented bootloop issue. I've encountered it & had my motherboard replaced. I've had no issues since but it's luck of the draw I suppose. Full specs are linked in the original post too.

make sure you check the firmware and/or software version to see if its been repaired duevto boot loop issue...its a massive pain in the bum when it happens..check if LG will still repair them under warranty...I'd be very wary at this price that they haven't bought a dodgy batch to sell on..

pelaquin
10 May 17 2 #51
I have the G4 and have done since launch, the boot loop problems only present themselves on the earlier versions of the phone. I was one of them, but LG still offer 2 years free cover should the worst happen and you can get a replacement phone as well, the fix usually only takes 5-7 days this is of course if it. even happens at all.

Like I said this was only earlier devices, those of which I am sure were sold long long ago, but for £99 nothing on the market comes close to this phone, the camera will blow you away, the screen, the everything. In fact the only problem this phone has is the curved screen means if you put it face down on an arm of a chair it slides off lol, other than that buy this phone!
archer1204 to pelaquin
10 May 17 #64
That is not strictly true about earlier versions if you look you will see its all different ser nos old and new even though its mainly the older numbers are majorly affected also if your phone goes away some unlucky customers have had it happen again to them.
The first time i had the bootloop issue i was just at st pancras station about to get on a train the phone wouldn't turn off and in the end got so hot i could barely hold it.Thank god there was a removable battery otherwise i dont know what would have happened as it was virtually a full battery. Also whatever you dont have backed up you lose forever. As all you can do is send it away to be repaired. As long as you are aware of this issue.
If you have a case you dont have to worry about the curved screen

dreaded bootloops , http://www.trustedreviews.com/opinions/lg-g4-bootloop-problem-how-to-diagnose-and-fix
discussed in UKUKDEAL http://www.hotukdeals.com/ask/lg-g4-stuck-boot-loop-2471620
.
But repair under 12 months warranty, I suppose can hope for Consumer Rights Act 2015, Six months or more

If a fault develops after the first six months, the burden is on you to prove that the product was faulty at the time of delivery.

In practice, this may require some form of expert report, opinion or evidence of similar problems across the product range (which is easy to do as this bootloop is a well documented problem and LG admitted anyway). You have 6 years in which to make a claim although it is not expected that a product should last this long but I would have thought 3 years?!

Anyone worried about bootloops/failures - don't worry!

LG offer a TWO YEAR warranty - just keep your receipt.

The G4 was the first phone I had where I thought we've reached a point where phones are so good that I would only upgrade when my current one fails. Im approaching my 2nd year now so the warranty is almost up. This new phone essentially gives me a phone for another 2 year. Maybe four years after my initial purchase there may be a phone out there that's excellent bang for buck and a noticeable improvement over this.

if it goes in boot loop cant you just root it / put new custom rom etc to fix it?
dark_shadow to letterboxfortom

Nope. It's a fault by design and some have had to reflow the cpu to get temp access.
artnada to letterboxfortom
10 May 17 #175
No. It's a hardware fault. The solder on some joints expand when it heats up and cause a a split thus faulting.
archer1204 to letterboxfortom

If it goes into bootloop and its already on this means it wont switch off and the battery will get hotter and hotter. The only way is to take the battery out and lose everything thats not been backed up then send off to vodafone to get fixed

ranxzy to RedRain
10 May 17 1 #220
Have the Note 4 as my personal phone and the G4 as the work phone. The G4 camera is significantly better, G4 is also generally smoother in use.

G4 is the best all round phone I've ever owned really, especially for under £250 and I've been through a LOT of phones. A phone this good under £100 new is outrageous.

Ring fence means they've told the bank that you've promised them £99 in exchange for the product, should it not be fulfilled they can reject the payment. So yes, it will appear debited , however a better analogy is 'put aside'

Was so tempted to buy this. Got to payment but had some nagging doubts about the boot loop issues already mentioned here. Have just read LG are subject to a class-action lawsuit in the States over this matter. What is more annoying is that they initially refused to acknowledge the problem and refused to provide support to owners of the G4. Lots of other issues too. Hope those who took a punt with this fare ok.

Motherfcker!!! Ordered the zuk z2 12 days ago and it still hasn't arrived. My g4 was a beauty! Lost it on holiday a year ago. Still the best camera I've personally seen on a phone. The new ones may have bigger pixels now and better low light processing, but on a sunny day no phone camera comes close. Hell, even with low light, it yeilded great results on manual controls.

An absolute steal getting a 1440p screen, expandable memory, 16mp camera, stunner of a phone for £99!!!

PS: I loved the leather back to this phone. It's not tacky, it genuinely looks and feels great.

They wouldn't have actually taken the money from your bank account or credit card.
If they had actually taken your money you would have a legal contract with them for the goods at the price paid
What they do is put in a request to your bank for a pending transaction and only when they dispatch the item they take the money out and your contract with them begins.

They'll have reserved the funds from your card, not taken payment. Some banks show this as taken off your balance, others don't until they actually clear the money.

Much more than common. Mine happened July 16. At that time LG customer services were deluged with so many complaints about it that they couldn't cope with the volumes. They couldn't be contacted and did not respond to messages. Dreadful. So i contacted currys ebay and they immediately gave me a full refund. I do miss the G4 which is why i've come back for more.

Got my cancellation email(as expected)
How to ask for my money back? I paid with my Monzo card with the initial 100 pounds to pup. I know banks just block the amount but Monzo is fast and account shows just 1 pounds now. Do I need to call Sainsbury's or they will do it automatically at some point?

Don't worry, you won't have to do anything. I've got a Monzo card too, the funds are allocated to a pending transaction but they're not sent to Sainsburys until they dispatch. With the order being cancelled, you'll get a refund notification in a few hours (most likely).

In a nutshell. Small number for sale, mispriced. Before they noticed and corrected it, the orders went stellar. A few early birds will get the deal the vast majority will not. End of. Irritating but to the old lags like me on HUKD me we've seen it all before. No conspiracy on Sainsbury's part, just incompetence together with the absence of a real time stock update system. TBH if this is the worst thing you've got to grumble about then perhaps you don't realise how lucky you are.

Well, actually, much much more complicated than you would think. Just imagine how complex it actually is to tie up something physical to something electronic. First off you have to have a way of tracking stock coming in and out of a facility. That then has to speak to a computer system of some sort. It can be so complicated that there are major global businesses that specialise in doing it on behalf of suppliers. The thing is, we've all got used to Amazon standards of logistics and customer service. Not everyone can reach that. This is why Amazon is the global behemoth and leader that it is.

No, it's not complicated. It is school boy programming.
Set stock level.
Every order taken reduces stock level.
Stock level 0 = out of stock.
Can be more clever: when in basket, check stock level first and mark stock and release if not purchased within x minutes.

When stock comes in, increment stock.

Even in the days of DOS, this was possible.

Even basic free e-commerce packages do this.

There are transactional issues with database records that can crop up where multiple simultaneous transactions are taking place. This is a non-trivial problem to solve. Even your super-duper locking solution doesn't amount to much when a thousand things are happening at the same time.

But carry on telling us how simple it is. Maybe somebody cares, but it won't be anybody who does this stuff for a living.

It is simple for a competent developer. Every heard of an SQL Server database or Oracle. How about Sybase? It really is basic. People who say it is difficult just have little knowledge. (I have a MSc in Computing).

Even freewebstore handles it.

Kid yourself it's hard. Even Clarks manages to handle this on their site. The Sainsbury's system is not fit for purpose. It is a cheap solution.

wild_quinine
11 May 17 1 #468
Look, I'm literally telling you that when you're dealing with massive volume, the things you take for granted about transactions stop being so simple. And your response is... SQL Server. Wow, so that just solves all those problems does it? Amazing.

That is exactly the sort of answer I'd expect from someone with an MSc, but little to no actual experience. You are the living definition of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing.

I messaged Sainsburys Phoneshop Support to ask them why they left it up for sale for so long after it was sold out and still take so many orders and then have to cancel them and I said the cancellation email was a complete lie and that they just made a mistake and put it at the wrong price' so why cant they just admit that they made a mistake and they cant sell it for that price as someone put it on at the incorrect price and not just its out of stock, This is the reply i got

I’m am very sorry to hear of your dissatisfaction.

I can assure you the reason for the cancellation was due to exhaustion of stock.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

I don't have an MSc (a theoretical degree I guess) but I do have an MBA and real life experience consulting on supply chain, RFID and Warehouse management solutions and a dash of SAP solutions. It is not a simple task, in my experience. If it were simple, Sainsbury's (and others - including Vodafone and many other global businesses) wouldn't get it so badly wrong. Sainsbury's don't employ total idiots you know. There may be the odd idiot but it's not the whole executive.
barbiegirl
11 May 17 #482

11 May 17 #484
What is laughable is that Sainsbury's don't have have real time stock control on their phone site when it is easy to achieve and there are open source options available, and you seem to defend them saying it is hard.

They led HUKD users on, thinking they would receive a phone, then had to cancel all orders. This is pathetic for a company the size of Sainsbury, who have real time stock control at Argos online.
barbiegirl
11 May 17 #485
Despite several attempts to parse your last sentence I'm afraid I still can't make sense of it.

You're obviously feeling a bit let down as you didn't get a cheap LG G4, and of course I agree with you that it's a bit poor on Sainsbury's behalf. But neither of those factors make it a simple thing to do, which is the core of your tenet. I also doubt there's anything as conscious about this mini-debacle as 'leading people on'. Moreover, looking at the comments from the community as a whole, this vendor has previous, so I'm not sure many people were that led on anyway.

I'm not trolling you, I just think you are over simplifying something that can be - note 'can be' - very complicated to do in practice.

Have a nice evening.
bubblypeter
11 May 17 2 #486
They were accepting orders for an out of stock item for hours. A bloke copying stuff from a screen with a pencil then walking into the warehouse and counting stock could have done better. Their stock management and ordering system is obviously garbage or more likely their system intentionally lies to customers hoping they won't be peed off enough to cancel while waiting for them to re-stock.

Complicated to you and Sainsbury's, but not to countless other people or organisations.
What have they grasped, that you cannot? You are trying to make something appear complicated that really isn't difficult to a competent software developer. May be the system design and logic is just beyond your ability.

Disappointment put aside for one moment, had the Sainsbury's branding not appeared on the website I would have avoided this discounting the 'offer' in the first place. Comic Relief noses are still displayed on the home screen but worse still within the 'contact us' page, it still showing the festive 2016 opening hours! Clearly this operation is being slowly wound down,

Honestly, this entire conversation has been taking place at a level above where you think it has. The real irony is that your precise mindset is why failures like this occur.
Common.Sense
12 May 17 1 #495
Yes, so people cannot grasp real time stock management is not rocket science. Millions of sites implement this, including Argos (owned by Sainsbury's) and to some people it is hard, because they are not capable of implementing it and then seek to defend PhoneShop by Sainsbury's.

They took orders all day, knowing they did not have stock.

The irony is I know the process is easy and people with your mindset is why this occurs as you think it hard to implement when the world even has open source software to handle it.
Dangerous_Dave2k
12 May 17 1 #496
Have to say I cannot see what is difficult about having a piece of software that removes one from a number every time payment is taken for an item, and then refuses to take payment after that number equals zero. Many people may be trying to check out at the same time, but they do not all click the 'send order' button simultaneously. Sainsburys just ballsed this up royally.

Got cancel email too. Did you guys get charged? Their email say they have not charged me but bank account appeared to show something pending...

Sainsburys phone shop should be banned from HUKD. Did they ever have a single LG G4 for £99 or an iphone 5c for £49.

Thank you for your reply.

We are aware that there have been various shortcomings relating to the various systems involved, and have raised this with management who are aware of the issues.

It is unfortunately not likely to affect any change, as Phone Shop by Sainsbury’s is expected to cease trading within the next 2-3 weeks.
It with regret that we have been unable to supply you on this occasion.

I have sent further instruction to your card issuer that we will not be claiming the funds.

The funds will be automatically returned to your cleared balance by your card issuer.
You may wish to contact them for confirmation of timescales, we can only advise that this typically takes 2-3 days.

Please accept our sincerest apologies once again.

Kind regards,
Sam,
Phone Shop Support.

Popped into the Phone Shop at my local Sainsburys to see what they have in... almost nothing. Apparently they are closing down next week. That might be the whole business, or just my local.

What they did have was reasonably priced, and matched the web store.

I noticed there are some Chinese sellers on eBay selling new euro H815 variant LG G4 for around £130, which is a bargain if correct. Anybody looked at those. Are they genuine?

Still pending for me too, but note that the money hasn't actually been taken - this Amazon statement explains it well: About Pending Charges for Cancelled Orders

"When you place an order with Amazon.co.uk, we may contact your payment card's issuing bank to confirm that your card has a valid number, and hasn't been reported as lost or stolen. This is communicated via a full authorisation for the purchase. However, we don't actually proceed with the charge. This is simply one of the security measures we use to protect our customers.

If you then cancel your order, even though we haven't proceeded with the charge, the bank may hold the authorisation on your card for up to 10 business days.

Note: You'll need to contact your bank if you want to have this authorisation removed before that."
