Not a bad price at all if you're looking for an interface to add to your rack setup. Currently working off a cheap Zoom setup and relying on that for everything (nope it doesn't quite cut the mustard :smile: ) It's a world away from something like this though.

Be warned those of us using new mac hardware without native firmware ports, these firewire interfaces are very ropy on El Capitan and above. I have a Mackie Onyx 1640i that will only work on Yosemite on my iMac 5k (requires a £30(!!) firewire to thunderbolt adaptor). Also the plugins may or may not work on later versions as well due to a change in the way the plugin validator works. Very frustrating. Don't do what I did and expect this to work out of the box on the latest OS X it seems that Apple want to remove support for firewire and strip all traces of it from the OS. I foolishly updated to El Capitan as soon as it came out and it completely broke support for most of my plugins and it refused to recognise the hardware. I wiped the system and reinstalled Yosemite and everything worked like a dream.
These are getting price dropped everywhere right now, so I would avoid any firewire interface like the plague right now. It looks like Apple are getting ready to officially drop firewire support from their operating system.

Nice anecdote.
I have used this on a Mac Pro without FireWire with the adaptor for years and had no problems
I have also used it on the latest MacBook Pro with the official adapter (USB-C), and had no problems
Both on Sierra.

I don't need this many inputs (Not atm anyway) but can this be used as a high end music production (usb?) soundcard regardless? It's just seems relatively speaking much better value than the equivalent 2in USB version?

If you want something smaller but better quality for the cash, the Audient preamps get better reviews. But if you're after some great plugins deals its tough not to go for the Focusrite family.

Are there issues with backwards compatibility with Thunderbolt as it's up to version 3 now and uses USB Type C connectors?
To use with Thunderbolt 1 you need a Firewire converter cable which is ~£30.
I guess this is backwards looking hence the price reduction from multiple retailers.

I've never had issues using this with thunderbolt.
If you want to use it on the latest TB3 (on the MacBook Pro) you need:
- TB3 to TB2 adapter
- TB2 to FireWire adapter
Put one adapter into the other. It works perfectly!
