4k 28" freesync monitor £199! Says HDMI 2.0 4k at 60hz but is a TN panel from unknown brand.

Previous reviews when 249 seem to say only did 4k at 30fps but this advert says otherwise. Maybe upgraded design? The company seems British importer but no idea what underlying panel is. Found it when googling for a qnix on ebay based in UK. Anyone got any experience of this monitor? I have a 46" 1080p Samsung tv but prefer my 23" AOC IPS monitor for gaming strategy games where you need to read text. So looking for a bigger screen and 4k and freesync makes this interesting!

The JAPANNEXT JN-T2820UHD looks the same.
Only available in Japan and has more reviews (all in Japanese).

Not sure if that is an actual brand or just own label stuff like ElectriQ.

hey thanks for that! it is much better marketed on japanese website! however no mention of freesync on japanese specs page (didn't read review yet as on phpne and hard to read) and tech sheet saud 2x4w speakers but this says none? so might be similar and same panel or might not be? worth investigating though! has anyone got a 28" 4k with tn panel? there was an lg ips 27" for around 280 recently.

I don't have a 28" 4k but do know any & all 28" TN 4k monitors are using the same panel - see the 28 - 31.5 tab here - http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/monitor_panel_parts.htm just 2 parts from Innolux exist. So the Acer RT280K that's done the rounds on here a few times now (here which BTW is back in stock at Ebuyer), this one you have found + all others apparently use the same panel, it's just then the extras each manufacturer may do with that panel. I'd probably go with the Acer over this one you've found as a more reputable brand name & only £25 more.

I did buy the 27" LG IPS, set it up yesterday and very happy with it, although to be honest the fact it needs scaling for the desktop not to be so small I still think 1440p is the sweet spot resolution at this size.

Is there is reason why;

- There is barely any 32" 4k TV's?
- That the 4k TV's are pretty cheap but monitors are crazy
radiocaf to iAmLegendFam
19 May 17 2 #17
The lack of 4K 32" TVs is either there being no market to justify making them, or that they're too expensive to manufacture?
As for monitors being dearer, it's down to the processor inside the monitor. Professional gamers, and those who identify as such want nothing to impact their performance and want to always be at their peak, so they buy monitors with the quickest refresh rates, smallest input lag and lowest grey to grey response times as possible, so what they see on the screen is as near to instantaneous as possible. They also don't want any ghosting, tearing, backlight bleed, IPS glow, and clouding or any other defects that can impact their visuals. This is also true for the professional market, their monitors cost so much because they want as near to 100% colour representation as possible from their monitor, in order to accurately edit and product media. Technologies such as FreeSync and G-Sync costs extra, too.

If all that was too much to read, maybe check out this "as fast as possible" video on YouTube that explains gaming monitors. They do a few monitor videos you may be interested in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC-KHOKM7ck

You sit 30-50cm from a monitor,

You sit 2-4m from a tv.

Closer you are the more you notice increased pixel density.

The refresh rate listed is a physical property if the display, this monitor will top out at 60Hz regardless of the resolution you're playing.

Depends on what you want to do on the display. Productivity, hell yes. Gaming? It's a pity you don't have an AMD card for the FreeSync. Ultimately depends on what kind of games you're into/play most. You might struggle to 'max out' the most recent AAA titles for sure. I've got an i5 CPU and a 1070 GPU with my 4K display, but I'm a relatively patient gamer who waits for games to be on sale and their performance patches complete. I'll also choose custom medium-high settings on intensive games to avoid any frame drops, for instance in Witcher 3/Mass Effect Andromeda I play mostly on medium (ultra textures) with SweetFX filters applied. Most of the games I sink huge amounts of time into though are maxed out e.g. Rocket League.

I believe the company is Korean, when I was checking them out before Christmas, they didnt have a very good rep - lots of unreliable screens being returned by US customers.

Some screens can run lower resolutions at higher refresh rates; there are a few no name 50" 4K screens touted as running 1080 at 120fps.

Most newer 4K PC screens can run 60fps with the right cables and equipment, but you need a VERY hefty graphics card to run a 4K gaming screen, which is why most non-millionaire gamers still use 1080p.

I would rather play games at 1080 with 120fps, than 4K at 60fps.

Also, at 28", text is so small, you need either the eyes of a young hawk, or sit 2 inches (5.08cm), away from the screen to read it.

I've got an Acer CB240HYK 24" screen (been posted here before - including once by me :innocent: ). I do love it, but wish it was slightly larger I'll be honest. I honestly don't seem to have as many scaling issues as other people, the godly pixels per inch eases my eye strain maybe. Mine has the benefits of IPS so slightly nicer colours than a TN panel. I suppose the upside of this display would be the crazy-fast response time and FreeSync ensuring a clear upgrade path for GPU upgrades.

I find 1440p without scaling quite hard on the eyes. Yes, it is possible, but not great on the whole. Scaling by 125% is better, but then you nearly lose the advantage of more screen space.

On 4K, I use 175% scaling, and that seems perfect to me. I guess 150% and 200% would also be reasonably, if you like it a bit finer or a bit larger.

comments generally positive. some say need direct port for 4k at 1080p. general comments on ips vs tn as you expect. for the price seems to be a bargain according to reviews

I'd be worried about the durability of this panel!.. I've had several panels from cheap monitors made by unknown/small brands just completely die and plus with no way of getting a warranty on them seeing as they only had 12 months warranty as well of which I was out of when these monitors died on me!..

BUT, for £200, could be a good punt if you aren't worried about the above!..

windows 10 recommends 150% on 4k 27", I am sticking with that, tried 125% but too small. my work laptop can only output 4k at 30hz so I've set it to 1440p on the 4k screen, looks pretty good to be honest without scaling

You'll be fine for older games like WOW or Diablo 3. Newer stuff at Ultra settings might be a problem but you can always run them at a lower rez.

I have a question, would this be worth a purchase for my PC with i5 cpu and GTX 970 strix? I am in need of a new monitor and was thinking of a 24inch+ 1440p to upgrade my 21inch 1080p one, but thought this may be better for future proofing and will run nicely at 1440p anyway? or can anyone recommend a decent 1440p gaming monitor that is this price or less? Thanks

Edit - Oh and I may hook up my Xbox One S to it as well as Sky Q silver box for UHD programs!
nellybauer to musefan2001
24 May 17 2 #36
I thought much the same about future proofing (I bought an alternative 27" LG IPS 4k screen). I'm still running an old I5 2500K @ 4ghz + RX 470 4GB. It can run games at 4k medium settings reasonably well but also is fine with running games at 1440p with higher settings.

For Sky - be aware this particular monitor here is a TN panel - you need to be looking at completely straight on for colours to be reasonable, thats usually fine when using it for general PC duties but for TV viewing, if you will be viewing from an angle at all you would be better off with an IPS or VA panel.
musefan2001
25 May 17 #37
Thanks for the reply, much appreciated! As its only for my office, direct viewing angles won't be an issue! My concern is using a 4k monitor on 1440p and 1080p, does it have a detrimental effect on the graphics? I read this can cause a more blurry picture etc? what has your experience been? Were you using a 1080p monitor before and would recommend the jump? Thanks again
nellybauer
26 May 17 1 #38
My work laptop will for not output 4k so I've been running it at 1440p, it is ever so slightly blurry on the Windows desktop but I find it perfectly usable. 1080p on the windows desktop is just far too large for this screen size, very happy i didn't go for 1 of the cheaper 27" 1080p screens. I assume though you mean only really running at lower res for games & using 4k on the windows desktop? My experience has been good with gaming at 1440p & even 1080p looks good in my testing. 1080p should scale more easily to be honest - it's a direct half of the size in each direction so can the display can directly use 2to1 ratio for the pixels (i.e. 3840/1920 = 2 & 2560/1080 = 2), whereas 1440p, is 1.5to1 (i.e. 3840/2560=1.5). I don't know how the display deals with the fact it has to use 1.5 pixels for each pixel of resolution but it looks alright to me. Obviously full 4k is the clearest picture but you have to sacrifice settings unless you are running a GTX 1080 or above anyway.
Yes I was using a 24" 1080p screen before, it was a VA panel, that's why I wanted to stick with IPS or VA for the new screen as I thought I'd notice the difference if I were to drop down to a TN screen like the one in this deal. Would definitely recommend it, even if just for the extra screen real estate for work, browsing etc. To be honest though I think 1440p is the right res for 27/28" screens - on my work laptop I run 1440p with no Windows scaling needed & everything is a nice size, with 4k on my desktop you need to run Windows at 125% scaling at least, I'm using 150% so whilst you do get the extra pixel clarity, for actual real estate there's not a massive difference from 1440p. That said I couldn't find a 1440p freesync IPS/VA panel in the same price as the 4k one was.
musefan2001
26 May 17 #39
thanks for the update appreciate the advice. decided to leave a 4k monitor for now and go with a decent 1080p one as I'm happy enough at that Res and gonna get a4k telly instead as it'd get more use!

Mine arrived this morning and after having a play with it over the last hour I can really vouch for it. I did have a high end Acer Predator 4K G-Sync Monitor previously that I got rid of once I sold my desktop computer, and felt it was overkill for a PS4 Pro, and therefore downgraded to this. I won't give an extensive review or anything but will list a few pro's and cons, and will finish by saying for £200 this is a great piece of kit!

Pros:

Very good picture quality
Good viewing angles (Better than I had expected)
Built in sound
Stand takes less than a minute to assemble and is really simple
Fantastic value for money.

Cons:

Basic looking thing, no bells and whistles
Cheap feeling plastic stand, but realistic for the price paid
In-built speakers well below par obviously

If you hit the menu button there's some presets you can choose between, such as movies and gaming.

Yeah, I certainly would. Obviously it's not as fancy as the likes of the Predator, but as someone who has paid an awful lot of money for an expensive Monitor previously I couldn't justify spending the extra money for the extra bit of quality (mostly visually) you get from it.

Mine arrived the other day and I've just been playing around with it.

As others have said the general build quality and the stand are not the best, and in particular the stand tends to wobble a bit as I type on the keyboard. But it's not a major issue, and it's hard to expect more at this price.

The panel itself gives a nice sharp picture at 4k resolution and viewing angles seem fine, at least for desk use. It initially gave a rather washed-out look, and it took me a while to figure out which setting to change on the graphics card settings (for the record, I had to set "Quantization Range" to "Full Range" in the Intel HD graphics control panel) but now it looks nice and vibrant.

Very happy with it so far.

I have 2, no dead pixels, no complaints, think I might have to do something about the gash looking electriq logo on the front, but they are going to be wall mounted so won't shake and being as they are combined less than the cost of the ultrawide I was looking at, by some way, I can't grumble.

If anyone is thinking of getting one of these, i'd just say you get what you pay for. When you tinker with it the panel is decent and makes up for most of the downsides (unless you get dead pixels like mine had) the build quality is abysmal (very cheap plastic mine had a bit snapped off on the back in the packaging), the speakers are very poor definitely need an alternative and i'm not sure if it's just my unit but the speakers hiss even when not in use and the volume is set to 0. If you get a unit without some of the issue's I had, the panel at this price is worth it, but this is by no means a high quality product.
