You can get those big D-shaped ones from B&M etc for about £5, which also detect wooden beams. They take a bit of calibration, but if you use common sense and follow the lines, I'm sure it'll be just as accurate as this

This unit will not detect studs and joists. A detector that can accurately detect studs, joists, pipes, cables, nails and screws is very useful. A unit that doesn’t work very well or simply doesn’t detect everything can be very annoying.

Yes it would do the same job but this is a much better model/brand. Have used the maplin one before and found it difficult/annoying to use
