I think this is a good deal Personally I would look for something backlit, with better build quality.

My question is why didn't external graphics cards take off. Ultrabook by day, plug into external graphics card by night via open source interface.

The graphics card and other specs on this laptop are good enough for running a lot of games. You aren't obviously going to run AAA games at 1080p with a playable framerate but the appeal here is the portability. If someone wants a gaming rig a desktop is always the best option but this will give you acces to a lot of games to play on the go if you need it.
There are plenty options out there for what you are asking. Drop the graphics and get more storage and better processor etc. £550 is a fair budget for an everyday laptop. It's going to get minimum requirements for a gaming laptop though. Hope you find what you want. It's a minefield picking the right one!

A second hard drive for more storage? A better screen/processor, etc, more RAM? I'm just guessing - Not that any of those are bad in this laptop,. I just wonder why a graphics card in a laptop is such a selling point compared to other things. Unless you really are gaming on a laptop, in which case spending more than this is surely mandatory any way for a decent experience?

I'd prefer the same with out the graphics card but other bells and whistles. Do people really look to mid-priced laptops for high end gaming? All I ever reading about PC gaming is how building a rig or at least buying a desktop is the way and laptops are always a silly option to take. Take out the graphics card and for the same price something more useful coule be put in to make this a more attractive mid-price option.

I've always been the same, but I bought an Alienware due to limited space, being away for work 1/4 of the year and the resale value which desktops don't have (less you scrap them individually). I got a good deal on the Alienware but otherwise yeah desktops are 100% better - it's just most people are nervous at building one when it's mega easy now. I'll be building one when I move to a bigger place.

If you want something for gaming that's not stupid pricing, this is probably the best value option you have on a GTX 1050
Nah just find an older laptop with a gtx 970m. Second hand they cost alot less than any laptop with the newer gtx 1050 and have much much better performance.

It's got half the power of an Xbox one/PS4 - rocket league will be ok but might only be at 720p not 1080p. If you want a gaming laptop you'll be wanting to spend closer to £800-900 and get at least a gtx 1050

Witcher 3: Playable at 768p at ALL LOW (only 30fps) RATING: Unplayable
GTAV: Playable at 1336p at some turned up settings (40fps) RATING: Playable
Rocket League: Should be no problem (1080p medium) at about 50fps.
However, as mattturner756 said, this is definitely no gaming laptop, so even those framerates listed above are pretty much best case scenarios.

If you want a decent gaming laptop then your starting point should be any laptop with at least a GTX 1050 GPU, but preferably a 1060.
Better yet, hold out a little near the end of the year and see what APU solutions AMD will reveal for laptops.
