The jump is substantial, with a performance increase of over 50% in most modern titles. If you're only gaming at 1080p then it doesn't matter much since the 970 already blitzes most games at max settings, but if you want to game at 1440p or 4K and get a big boost in frames then the difference is significant.
What a deal! Absolutely wipes the floor with a PS4 Pro for £100 less. And that's not even factoring in free online, cheaper games, not paying £30 a pop for "remasters" of last-gen games, and the ability to upgrade when and as you want. Wow.
domlin
22 May 1710#53
So you're saying that this graphics card, on it's own, is better than a PS4 Pro?... Just going to ignore the cost of a PSU, Motherboard, processor, SSD/HDD, RAM, case, etc?...
gr8m8
22 May 17#54
true dat, and PS4 pros are 300 now, although I'm not saying it would be better than a full system with a 1070
domlin
22 May 171#55
Yeah I completely agree, a well built high spec gaming PC will wipe the floor with the console, but you're going to be nowhere near the low cost of the PS4 Pro haha.
Yes gaming PCs are better in many ways, but it's undeniable that consoles have a very firm place in the market. Cheap to buy, games often on offer, and they are small and quiet units that fit in most living rooms without batting an eyelid.
Matthew_117
22 May 17#56
Hi guys Does anyone know if this is the updated version of the card?
I'm guessing this model would be the original due to the price cut. If so, can anyone explain if the difference between the cards would be noticeable?
The original PS4 and Xbox One are absolute tanks. They're huge and very loud. Small, aesthetically-pleasing PC cases are available these days.
You could probably build a decent PC around this for about £300, assuming you're starting from scratch. Again, once you factor all of the money saving things in, it's cheaper in the long run. Not to mention a far superior gaming experience. And you can use it for work and other PC things.
Let's not forget that PS players have had to pay: £350 at launch for the PS4, £350 again for the PS4 Pro, and will probably have to spend £400 in 2 years when the PS5 comes out. £35/year for online = £245 over 7 years too. So not paying for online pays for a new top-of-the-range graphics card every console generation. Sure, trade-ins knock some of the cost off, but console gaming is not cheap.
To put it another way, this graphics card + £300 of other components gets you a high-end PC for £550.
A PS4 at launch + 7 years of online = £350 + £245 = £595. For a far weaker, more restricted platform with a tiny library. Try and maths your way out of that
domlin
22 May 172#58
I don't know what components you're getting for £300 to make this a £550 PC, but they aren't going to be high-end. Additionally you've only factored the cost of getting a new GPU every console generation, but in reality you may also need to upgrade supporting components such as the CPU, motherboard and RAM (And PSU if your new gfx card is power hungry).
I prefer PC gaming to console gaming, but it's not cheaper.
commenter14
22 May 17#59
Replacing a motherboard, PSU and RAM every 7 years? Are you mining Bitcoins? Sure you have to update components occasionally (although I haven't had to touch anything in the 3 years I've had my PC), but the advantage of owning a PC is that you can upgrade whenever you want, and within your budget. Far better than when Sony says "hey our new console is coming out, you need to spend £350 on this day or you're not playing new games anymore". If you get some Christmas money from your grandparents you can even decide to have a better gaming experience, which again you can't do with a Playstation.
ElGofre
22 May 17#60
It doesn't appear that they updated the 1070, only the 1060 and 1080 according to that article, and instead just dropped the price.

22 May 17#64
I did just that and I wouldn't say the jump in quality / performance was that big. Wish I'd saved my pennies for a 1080ti when that reduces. Even a 1080 would offer at least 4k in decent frame rates. I wouldn't recommend it unless you've a specific game or task that warrants it.

22 May 17#66
Sorry...i should have asked what monitor resolution you play at first.
If you are using a 1080 monitor, then your 970 is just fine.
if you want to move up to a resolution of 1440 then the 1070 is a great update, will even play some games in 4k with adjusted settings.
buy a 1080 or a 1080ti if you want to blitz the game on a 4k settings monitor

22 May 17#75
Hardware wise PC gaming is certainly more expensive. Depending on the types and number of games you buy and whether or not you sell on your old console games a PC can be cheaper overall.
As Intel has had so little competition for a long time performance hasn't evolved that far. A 5 year old 3570k would be fine with the 1070.
