I've just been into Asda Queensferry and they're marking down loads of electrical items.

I bought a couple of pairs of headphones reduced from £15 to £1.

I did notice they had loads of Xbox one and PS4 games reduced to around £4.

They had an LG 43" 5100 series TV for £167 amongst other cheap TVs.

They also had a Goodmans soundbar for £13!

Go and have a look.

Also a little bird has told us that main sale goes live this Thursday 18th May

"They also had a Goodmans soundbar for £13!"

As a better-sounding and cheaper alternative consider attaching some string to a tin can and wiring that into your TV.

New member here. I went to Orbital retail park in Swindon and they had a fair amount of headphones.Skullcandy Grind Wireless were £30 (down from £60). Skullcandy Roar Wireless were £20 (down from £40). Skullcandy Smokin' Buds 2 in-ear were £5 (down from £30).
These reductions are not obvious unless you are looking for them - the labels are mostly yellow but then so are the rollback ones and the in-ear ones were a white label, the same as non-sale items. There were a few TVs but not big reductions. Hope this is useful for someone.

Found 1 in Llanelli Asda living. it's behind the electrical desk upstairs. Good luck to anyone wanting a mini pocket projector. Blown away by mine despite the poor battery life and resolution, but I guess that's part and parcel of these projectors. Almost tempted to get a backup.

The big difference between the toxic sale and the promotional sale is with the toxic sale on some items they will be making a loss as they simply want rid of the stock. With the promotional sale they will make a profit on everything sold as it is a pre-planned promotion with ASDA's buyers buying bulk stock at a cheap cost specifically for the "sale" event.

What's most likely happened is what has happened at my store in the past were the night staff have taken everything they wanted and put it behind the tills or in the warehouse until their shift has finished which used to be 6am. The manager will know fine well that his staff are in the wrong because as I have said previously in this thread if staff keep reduced stock back for themselves whilst on shift they are breaking the Walmart Global Ethics policy and more specifically the Intentional dishonesty section of the policy which could lead to a disciplinary. The problem is managers turning a blind eye to what goes on.
jebroni3_16
18 May 17 #386
In some places, it's both.

I was there at Asda Cape Hill as they brought out 4 crates of console games (mainly PS4 and XboxOne, but a few PS3 and Xbox360) which were individually priced up by hand with red labels and would presuambly be defined as toxic stock.

However, there were also pages and pages of A4 reductions waiting on staff members to action them and replace the shelf pricing which would appear to constitute the promotional sale.

Can anyone help advise how I can post photos? I've looked in the website help section and that's not helping!

Oh yeah, a couple of staff I spoke to in my LONG time there were intrigued as to how I knew a sale was starting and assumed I worked for Asda. They hadn't heard of HUKD before someone else had mentioned it a few minutes earlier, but they have now!
nathzz
18 May 17 #385
The toxic stock sale and the sale that started today are completely different. The toxic stock is end of line stock and is dependant on what the store have left. The sale that started today is a promotional sale.

I managed to pick up some reduced lego dimensions packs, got Bad Cop and Scooby Doo team pack for £14 in the Walsall Asda (not the asda living). Haven't been in there apart from this morning so not sure if these were reduced today or were already reduced, but bargain nonetheless! Most of the reduced ones were Ninjago and LoTR so i call it a good buy

I went to Asda Cape Hill (West Mids) at 7 this morning when it opened as had been advised (correctly, by someone on here) that today was when it would be starting there.

I was just about the only customer there, although there were plenty of night staff, at least 1 of whom was carrying a few small personal electricals (cameras, possibly ex-display). Whilst I was loitering, at least two other members of staff, neither of whom were working, turned up to collect stuff that had been put aside (an iPod was one of the items) or waited for specific items to be brought out to them.

I spoke to a senior member of staff (who I was later led to believe was the manager) and enquired whether any of the electrical reductions would actually make their way to the shop floor in front of another member of staff who I saw take something from hidden behind a counter for a friend / colleague. The former gave me the usual stuff of there being "limited stock" and that staff are able to get items if they are things they are interested in, but the latter looked somewhat uncomfortable throughout.

Possibly because I was told by someone else that the "manager" was actually fuming at what had gone on when he arrived. If that were the case, I'll give him one thing: he's got a damn good poker face!

It took about an hour for the aforementioned red sticker reduced console games to start to appear and I can't really complain as I've done all right on that front, with some for my brand new PS4 and a few to potentially trade in at CEX for silly money. Well, credit.

I wouldn't say it's a wild goose chase, but the safe to say that the best geese were never actually let out of their cages!

the sale that article is talking about is completely seperate to this. That mega sale that starts on thursday is pre-planned and will have stock brought into each store for it. The toxic sale only involves items that are already on the shelves instore and that have had poor sales.

Fun and games at Asda Rawtenstall tonight where I spotted Verbatim DVD-R & DVD+R 50 pack spindles on sale at £4 down from £12.

My father and I read both -R & +R price labels to check the barcodes matched, before taking half a dozen of the -R packs to the checkout. Unexpectedly the first spindle scanned at £12, so the woman at the tills duly went to check. Around 5 minutes later she returned and said she had checked with her colleague who works in that section and that the +R packs were £4 but the -R packs were £12. We said we had read both yellow sale labels but she was adamant the DVD-Rs were labelled at £12.

So we went back to check the labels and, lo and behold, the -R label had magically transformed from £4 yellow (Sale) to £12 white. Very underhand.

16 May 17 #320
Says someone who has never worked in a supermarket. Who needs "privileges" to remove stock from the shop floor. happens all day every day, and certainly would not raise any suspicion from a manager, unless maybe if caught in the act. But people dont do things like this when they know a manager is stalking, they wait until they are not about.

The real world. It does happen and will continue to happen. And yes, it not only will go against company handbooks and working practise, but is against the law.
jordanc93
16 May 17 #318
In all fairness it does happen i've seen it myself. At my local store the night staff used to be the worst for this type of thing hoarding items they had found reduced to clear whilst filling the shelves and putting them behind the tills or in the warehouse. Their was one time they were selling off twin packs of bacon for 50p and two members of staff put 30 packs out the back ready to get when their shift finished at 6am. It mainly depends on how good the management is at the store in some cases i've often heard of managers turning a blind eye to staff keeping reduced stock back for themselves till their shift is finished or the managers even putting stuff back for themselves. I have no problem with any member of staff buying an item that is reduced to clear if they are not on shift, it's those who break the rules and keep stock back till the end of their shift I have a problem with.

RE: Staff taking stock / reduced items.

I think what people are trying to say is, it's unfair for a member of staff that is privy to the insider information RE: pricing / reductions, to then take those items before the public have access to them.

In my opinion, that does suck, but it is very much exactly the same scenario that plays out every time a new console comes out, or a video game, and sometimes even books. The staff take them before they make it to the shop floor. Everyone knows it happens, and I've seen it happen myself (from people that work in retail).

I guess it's one of those things, and the staff mark it as a "perk of the job". For the rest of us here on HUKD, browse the store(s) that are closest to you and see if you can spot any bargains that are left - I have no doubts that there are loads out there if you look hard enough!

Happy hunting!

16 May 17 #315
yeah, because every staff member has the same privileges, so they can just go onto shop floor and move a TV to the back, and no management is going to question it.

You are depriving your employer of the full value of the item. You could say theft, you may argue fraud.

To use this example.

Asda send round a list of Toxic stock to stores, identifying items that will be heavily reduced tomorrow. Staff member see a large TV at £300 will a big reduction down to £100 and also notices only 1 in stock, and removes it from display there and then, hides it in the stock room.

Customer comes in and enquires about TV, says "you had one earlier on the shelf, I wanted it". Sorry, says staff (may not be the one who hid it) non left. Computer shows 1 in stock but cant find it.

Customer leaves empty handed.

Staff member 1 comes in on the day of the sale, gets TV from stock room and pays just £100 for it.

Shop has been done out of £200. Some would say Theft, some would say Fraud, but whichever way you look it is illegal.

And yes, the same principal applies to the bakery items mentioned earlier, a joint of beef on a saturday, a huge easter egg just before easter etc.

There may be exceptions, like managers allowing an extra reduction as a staff perk, buy unlikely on most shops.

I have read about it before, but google not currently uncovering anything in UK law, only US.

Just to clarify:-
Asda colleagues are NOT permitted to hide stock and await a price reduction. We are not allowed to put stock aside for this 'Toxic' sale. Same goes for Black Friday and other sales. We are certainly not allowed to buy the items before it goes on general sale.
If caught it's disciplinary action.
The advantage we gain in finding bargains is:-
1) We know which items are about to be reduced but generally no more than 48hrs in advance and mostly on the day.
2) We are privy to the floor plans so know where the items are going to be on the shop rather than rooting around and walking every aisle to find the bargains.
If things sell out it's not because staff have bought them it's because there's a low PI on some items and people have bought them.
The sale is supposed to start Thursday.

Did you even read the post? If on the 1st of May a TV is priced up at £300 and a member of public buys it then he pays £300.
If a staff member removes it from sale on the 30th April knowing on the 5th May it is going to be reduced to £100, then buys it at £100 on the 5th, then how on earth is he paying the same price as Joe Public would if it was on the shop floor and purchased at full price on the 1st?

what a load of tosh. Staff member will be paying the exact same price as Joe public. Most stores will not give staff discount of discontinued items.
julieallen
16 May 17 2 #271
It could, in theory, come under the theft act.
If an item is £300, and a member of staff deliberately hides it from public view knowing it is being reduced a week later to £100, then buys it himself, that could have, in theory, deprived the retailer of £200.

I say in theory as, it would be extremely hard to prove a staff member deliberately didn't put it out for sale rather than made a mistake, and mostly it would be hard to prove it would have been bought at the full price. Its more likely the staff member would be reprimanded or sacked, if anything.
Lou.Scotland
16 May 17 1 #270
It's not theft of the item. It's depriving their employer of the sale of the item at full price, therefore it's still a form of theft, albeit not of the actual item.
Lou.Scotland

The bakery staff at my local Asda superstore put reduced price bakery goods onto a trolley and keep it just inside the entrance to the bakery area, so that the public don't take it. They were reducing £1 muffins to 39p for the public, but to 10p for themselves. Also reduced a £12 cake to 10p for themselves. I didn't report them but they really shouldn't do this.

But Asdas policy is there to stop staff hiding stock until it's reduced and buying it cheap, ie say 100 staff in a store hide premium Easter eggs until after Easter that isn't good for business. That and they don't want to annoy customers.

It's not a perk of the job at all. Their perk of the job is a 10% discount card as well as double discount days/week and other ASDA benefits. It's actually against their contract to hide away stock for themselves and breaks walmarts global ethics policy which all ASDA staff have to follow. Staff should also remember that their discount cards are actively monitored and a record is kept of everything purchased using them.

It's the poorest selling lines within the store that aren't shifting at their normal price hence the word toxic as it's stuck on the shelves taking up precious space. Last time they did this toxic sale was around october last year and seemed to be mainly the ASDA living stores that had lot's of reduced stock.

Been and got a tiger baguette for 20p (Big one) and an extra large extra tasty cooked chicken for £1.60. BOOM. Oh and I think staff had picked up some electronics bargains (as I was salivating at all the bargains in a box on the counter, an anxious employee ran over to explain they were his. No worries, and why not get a perk - they're all a good bunch). I did get 2 trust power banks for £5 - on eBay for £23. Also got 10 Mach 3 razors for £7.

The toxic stock clearance is store specific and will last only as long as the stock in available.. the term toxic stock means lines of stock that have not sold for a long periods of time (usually more than 13 weeks).

in various stores you can get some great bargains. including TV s (LG, Panasonic Viera), laptops (ask the colleagues as these usually won't be on sale), Phillips projectors £229 down to £67.
