I have absolutely no idea what this is, what it does or why I need it but have followed the HUKD ethos and bought it anyway...like a lot of my HUKD purchases I'm absolutely sure I'll use it at some point but thankfully this won't take up any cupboard space while I try to find a purpose for it to justify having bought it in the first place....unlike the other piles of junk I've gathered courtesy of HUKD

Hope you realise Buzz if I'm not entirely satisfied with my spur of the moment purchase I'll be expecting you to refund my 10p :stuck_out_tongue:

I use VLC too, it works perfectly well for me. I even disable all the annoying swipe gestures because I don't think they're needed and I think their more of a hindrance than anything... although they seem to be a big selling point of MX Player on the store page.

Can this play DVD rips from IFO/VOB files with the DVD menus? Trying to find a player for my M8S Android box that can do thus without jerky frame issues (I haven't managed to get KODI and VLC to play back rips from my own collection without jerky stuttering, although they do open the rips with the menus)?
plewis00
2 May 17 #52
Does this decode AC3 as I recall one of these players was missing this? Great deal at 10p though.
nyasham
2 May 17 1 #53
It does decode AC3 natively now.

In the past, AC3 support was removed from most media players because of a licencing/patent problem. It was only a minor inconvenience though because all you had to do was download a free custom codec and MX Player had full support again.
jasee
2 May 17 #54
I don't think it's a media sever, if that's what you mean.
Multicore decoding, apparently, it's the only one doing that?
I really don't like any form of gesture control. I always forget which one does what.
VLC is striaighforward in that respect. Works with subtitles etc.
But for ten p worth trying anyway?

Anyone have any idea how I fix this issue?

When I first signed up for Google Rewards, I was in the USA on holiday. Since then, I get rewarded in dollars. So now I have a bunch of dollars in my account.

I don't live there, I have changed all my Google addresses and cards to the UK, yet whenever I try and buy anything from the Play store, it charges me in Dollars. So I can't take advantage of offers like this as I still get the USA price. Still happens even if I choose my UK debit card.

Any ideas would be great!

2 May 17 1 #65
Hot from me, thanks for posting

I like it as the player seems to play all formats I've ever needed to play.

When streaming large files from a media pc over a network it seems to start playing the files much quicker than other browsers.

I also really like the touch controls for forward/rewind, brightness up/down, volume up/down, zoom/pan and playback speed and the fact that you can enable or disable them individually if you want to.
tarantulas
2 May 17 1 #66
Just to note,

the pro version is : 1.8.16 - last updated feb 14,

ha. well I explained it to my son thst mxplayer has adverts... or money... vlc doesn't. so they have an incentive to innovate. not sure about mpc hc. i read forums suggesting they were using ffmpg? so maybe vlc doing their own codecs?
nwressell
2 May 17 #104
great thanks
jameshothothot
2 May 17 #105
i also think people with newer hardware would benefit vs using vlc by extending battery life.

h265 1080p still uses 25pc cpu on my xeon e5620 with radeon rx 470 for vlc but close to zero on mpc hc. so on a laptop that is extra battery life by saving on your cpu? ditto for phones.

my phones and tablets are old and need mxplayer for some hd files. vlc might work on newer but use cpu? i check with cooltools

The patent expired on the AC3 codec this year they updated the app instantly to re-add AC3 support.
It no longer requires downloading an external "Custom Codec"

For those not in the know, I have always considered this the most capable video player for local files on Android.

I'm a Plex and VLC user and still love this player.

They also provide a kids lock Plugin on the play store that let's you lock a playing video on the screen, stops little ones messing with tablets when they should be watching a film.

Fewer CPU cycles to obtain the same result; pretty much the same meaning as it has in every other application of computing.

So I'm now logged into both gmail accounts, and within google apps you can switch in 1 swipe in and a click. so i can buy it in either currency depending on offer (you can also do this in the rewards app depending on what currency you want to 'win'.
Has a small added benefit of receiving all the US deals too. Once the app is installed its the same app so doesnt matter where you bought it from (us/uk)

There are codecs (if that is the right word) out there. I believe they are processor dependent, but searching for "1.8.6 armv7 neon", downloading on the phone restores AC3 and EAC3 sound for me. Just open the app and it find the zip file automatically.

"b) MULTI-CORE DECODING - MX Player is the first Android video player which supports multi-core decoding. Test result proved that dual-core device's performance is up to 70% better than single-core devices."

AFAIK basically all phones, (and other android stuff) use hardware decoding for video, since its MUCH more efficient, so being able to use multiple cpu's isn't useful, unless the decoding hardware isn't working for some reason.

2 May 17 #174
Download Raccoon, during the first run let it create a pseudo-device, the default will attach a SM-N920C/Galaxy Note 5 to your account. If you prefer you can download dummydroid and extract the build.prop from the rom of a phone you intend to get, but for most uses the default note 5 will be fine.

Once it is added to your account you will be able to buy MX player.

MX Player Pro.

Written in OP title.
Ripperoo
2 May 17 #185
Thank OP.

Purchased! HEAT!

However, when I got my first tablet in 2011 (Asus TF101 Transformer), MX played never seemed to work well for me (always had DTS audio codec problems IIRC). Hopefully its MXMP has morphed into something more stable/usable over the last few years, but for 10p, it doesn't matter either way I suppose.

In fact most of the media players at that time seemed to struggle when playing certain MKVs.

The only media player that I came across that seemed to work without issue was 'Archos Video Player' with the free'All Codecs For Archos Video' codec package.

Ironically, despite Archos being THE personal media player manufacturer not long before tablets as we know them hit the market, they never seemed to get a good enough foothold in the tablet market. The only actual Archos android tablets I ever tried were pretty poor, which was a shame as they kinda set the ball rolling so to speak.

research playercore setting in kodi, and this will can be what kodi plays through, useful if kodi is struggling

If you watch a lot of video on your phone you'll eventually come across some that don't work because of the format. This app has played every video I've thrown at it. It's great if you're the kind of person that watches full movies on your phone.

While weighing up the pros and cons of this vs VLC I realised it only costs 10p of Google Reward credit anyway - effectively free and might come in handy at some point in the future

In Australia, if I'm not signed in it says $0.20, click on buy and sign in, then the price shows $5.99

That's the thing. It might have all the same features as VLC but me more reliable. People won't know unless they try, and who is going to miss 10p?

That's because Archos isn't Archos anymore. They were a French company I believe. They are now just some generic label like Polaroid.

WTF?! 10p for MX Player Pro? FIRE...!

I have no idea what it does but at that price I've just bought it.

Clearly I have more money than sense lol

Edit: Doesn't do anything special my S7 Edge didn't do before anyway. Disappointed :disappointed:

If you paid £5 for it (more than it normally goes for) then yes, I'd agree with that.

3 May 17 1 #208
I've used MX player for years and it's fantastic at playing different types of video even HEVC/x265 encoded files. It's a great app and I'd definitely pay 10p for the Pro version. Heat!

Really depends what you need it for. if your looking for amazing subtitle support (eg choose where u want sub placement and font size also syncs with subtitles.org), watch and cast torrents files seamlessly all with the ability to lock the screen in app (for little fingers) then this is the one

It plays videos better than VLC and with a much lighter, less bloaty and more polished footprint. VLC has more features but I just want to play videos and I've yet to find a video file format that MX player can't play .

I've nearly bought it at full price but saw reviews that mentioned it had been on sale for 10p so I held off. They must do it for a reason but they lost my full price sale because of these discounts. It devalues the software imo.
Great video player though, especially now the AC3 issues is sorted.

Cheers Buzzduraband

When was the last time you tried VLC? I use it on fairly old devices and it works flawlessly for watching files off a media server.
For 10p I will probably check it out anyway but VLC isn't particularly bloaty and it's open source.
RedmanDealer
5 May 17 #226
Thanks for posting this, been using the free one for ages. Not sure whether it is better than the latest VLC (haven't tested it yet) bit can't complain for 10p!
Zerobob
5 May 17 #227
Yes that annoyed me too. There's a way around it that involves simply downloading the codec online and pointing MX Player to its location on your device.

However, I read recently that they have resolved this copyright dispute, so it should support ac3 again now.
