It would make sense to buy them more of these rather than £300+ iPads, that's for sure.

I've bought one. couldn't care less about the warranty period, the kids will smash it to bits soon enough anyway.

The fire kids gives 2 years warranty for anything, even if they can trash it. Also comes with a kid proof case, ours has been dropped down stairs and everything.

Got 2 for the kids(aged 3 & 6) for Christmas and both screens are broken as they keep dropping it way too often.... just contemplating whether to buy again or just forget it

Buy them the kids edition then - which is replaced by amazon with no questions asked.

My kids have had theirs for 2 and a half years and I have never had this problem. Buy a good case for kids they are worth it if they save the screen getting smashed. I found the rubber ones work best

Not sure if you've already been suggested this. Get the same tablet with the kids package thing from amazon. They will replace it no questions asked for two years and I think you also get access to a lot of content for a year. Costs just about twice the price of one.

i might be in the minority but i did think a guarantee covered broken screen. however JL electronics customer services dept soon put me right on this. i did get them to replace with a new one but that is another story !

It won't cover a broken screen if 'you' broke it, this applies to pretty much every warranty in the World, but of course with some products you can get accidental damage cover too.

You can't buy jl added care on this tablet. I tried in store and doesn't meet the added care criteria. They said Amazon will replace if any problems

I second this... bought ours from Very for £54 a few weeks back and have no worries about 1, 3 and 5 year olds breaking it!
RESEARCH the micro SD problems with this tablet. We sent ours back last month after corrupting 2 cards in a matter of weeks

Is it just ours, or is this 'new' 7" tablet really slow? Bought it during christmas sale and it's VERY sluggish... I also bought 2nd hand previous generation fire tablet last year, which in fairness runs much older version of Android, and it's actually much more responsive.. The newer one has a SD card in, do you think a corrupted card (see @chrisnoon74's reply) could cause this?

Put a rubber case on it but honestly I didn't even realise when it came off until I saw it broken on the dinning table Monday morning

Good price, heat added.
Personally I went for Hudl, unsupported and old now, however it's got better specs and can be had second hand or reconditioned (I haven't bothered, but it can be rooted as well)...

Didn't bother rooting mine. Just stuck on Netflix, added the Google Play store, Google Play Music, Bt sport, Sky Plus, Sky Go, Plex as well as the Maxthon Browser. I picked up a £20 class 10 Micro SD card from amazon to go with it (64Gb) so I can stick on 1,000's of songs, entire series of tv shows, a dozen films and still not worry about how much room I've got left on there. Perfect for taking into work with me on my lunch break and not worry about getting knocked around, pinched etc.

I've looked through lots of reviews and specifications but I only find contradictions so if anyone can answer me this, does this do screen mirroring? If it does is it through an app or directly through the device as the Samsung tabs do? Heat added for good price.
They are absolutely infuriatingly slow though, I wanted to throw mine every time I tried to use it. Thankfully some absolute mad-man bought mine for what I paid for it from me on eBay.

Wrong-ish . . . . . .Since version 5.3.2 you have not been able to root these. It's currently on 5.3.3.0 and they auto update (it can't be stopped on this version of the Fire tablet). I bought mine 2 weeks ago from JL and it came with 5.3.2.1 on it. I'd expect the same or later from Amazon direct.
So if rooting is important to you it's a bit of a lottery with slimmer chance of success with every passing day.
However, as others have mentioned, you can easily install Google services and the Play store on it. Depends what you want out of rooting it really.

Don't bother getting Amazon's kids edition, just buy the official Amazon kids case and fire tablet on their own. Much cheaper, and the official case is really great, my kids have dropped it down the stairs, out doors loads, etc for the last two years. Get a cheap screen protector too!

3 May 17#48
Confused as to what case to get for this. Seen an origami one on ebay but it says HD 7". Would that fit this? Or is it one for a 5th Gen? Or can someone recommend a decent tough case for this that will close it down when the cover shuts and will survive in my work bag being chucked about a bit. Thanks in advance.

You sure about Netflix offline? Only allowed on HD devices which this isn't (1025x600). I will be happy to be corrected as I have one and this doesn't work. Apart from that, great device for the cost, bought 2 last year at this price.

Sure. Just install the official Amazon store release not the Google Play store version. I found that the Google Play store one wasn't optimised enough and the downloads stuttered, where as the official Amazon one works fine.
Is it worth spending the extra tenner and getting the 16GB version, or just putting the money towards a MicroSD card instead?

what is the battery life like on these - would be a 8yr old playing a few games and watching prime kids on it, or Sky Kids if can be installed - currently has the Acer Iconia One 7 Inch 16GB Tablet. and that battery is shocking lasts an hour at most and only had it 6 months - not sure if can be returned though - any thoughts on that as well - bought it from Argos

Battery is "enough". I only use mine to watch telly on my lunch hours so I can't really comment on that a such. At a guess I'd say heavy usage with near full brightness with probably get you to around 4 hours or so.
Also, just checked and Sky Kids does indeed install and work fine on it, including downloads. Regards.
