After holding off and refraining from purchasing the 2015 Fire 7, I have noticed that the brand new 2017 model is out at the same price as the original; starting at just £49.99 for the 8GB Model.
Online articles have so far mentioned these differences:
'Thinner and lighter, which has an improved screen, longer battery life and more storage' as well as having Alexa built in.
I assume that 'more storage' is from the support for 256gb Micro SD cards now. Screen resolution is the same, but is now IPS. This has finally convinced me to take the plunge and I hope that others will too!

It will be interesting to see if this can be flashed with Android. I bet they've locked it down to make it much harder than with the older version.

Still stuck at 600p... for a so called improved screen they could at least bump that up to 800p.
Also, I was disappointed to find that NowTV won't work on this tablet.

Display is very poor on these tablets (very low resolution) - i wish i never purchased one!

these tablets , while dirt cheap are very much you get what you pay for, avoid if your a techie or can afford better. app support is very lacking , and the screens are very underwhelming ,battery on the other hand, at least on the 'hd' 8 is excellent, so I reccomend if you want something just for web browsing or for Netflix and Amazon.

So the screen is still washy, guess the Nexus 7 2013 edition will stay around for a while longer.

Long battery life, screen seems good for video, speakers good, but you really need to be a Prime member to have full use of. Well packaged almost like new. Maybe a little slow but good for the price
As I commented on the Fire HD announcement, "Buy any 3 all-new Fire tablets and save 20%" is similar to, but slightly better than "Buy 2, get third half price" (if that makes sense to anyone).

I have Prime and just use the tv and music benefit. If I buy a couple of the kids ones for my boys 7 & 3 can they use the same benefits from my Prime?
They only watch the kids tv stuff and the odd film but would make it worthwhile if we could share the content.

my only issue is these are $49.99 in US... so its a little cheaper there. How are these better than the recent £34.99 v5 ones though? anyone got a spec comparison chart handy?

I'd love to give heat for this, but I just can't get over the fact that the specs are so bad!
Appreciate the effort with the post OP, however similar /better spec can be had for less
(FWIW my Hudl has better specs than this and it's 4 years old! Admittedly it cost more at launch, however reconditioned ones can be had for around £30)
To be fair I didn't look very hard (Don't google Nexus!) and found this better specc'd 1080p 7" tablet for the same money, ok it's a used price, but I think it helps illustrate my point...

I agree, this should be cheaper. The Trusted review of the Amazon Fire points out one change: "The tablet is also capable of new software tricks, including support for Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant".
And darn it, I hadn't noticed that wasn't even a full review, just a little update on the old review (same as ExpertReview's effort - http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/amazon/amazon-fire:disappointed: ). They haven't had their hands on it yet.

That's actually the 1st gen Nexus 7, which is only 720p. The difference is probably not noticeable on a 7" screen but it also has the much slower Tegra 3 vs Adreno 320 GPU and no rear camera. Neither version have an SD card slot either, which is likely to be a problem on a 16GB tablet.
